    Hi Mike, the approach of your video is completely wrong, because you assume that: 1. the camera should be built according to the principles of those who are already familiar with analog cameras, or have progressed beyond a smartphone when it comes to photography. 2. the pictures taken with it should be of a quality that goes far beyond what is usually uploaded to Instagram or social media in general in terms of picture size and quality. 3. you are looking at the camera from the point of view of someone who is already familiar with analog photography, which makes your point of view biased to a large extent. 4. you also don't understand, or refuse to understand, what this camera is useful for, even denying it a right to exist to a certain extent, even if you have never held this camera in your own hands and have not yet tested it yourself. 5 And exactly THAT (points 1-4) is the flaw in your entire video. You don't put yourself in the shoes of the actual target group, you even deny their existence and you have zero idea about the camera, apart from what you've gathered halfway elsewhere. 6. to make such a harshly judgmental video, you should have had the camera in your hand and tested it intensively with 3 - 5 rolls of film. And sorry, if there is no target group, why are their sales exceeding the expectations of Ricoh/Pentax? Here's an anecdote from me: Yes, I haven't held the camera in my own hands yet and haven't been able to try it out, as I can only afford cameras that don't cost more than €30-60 due to health and associated financial problems. If that wasn't the case, I would probably have already bought a Pentax 17 as an always-on camera. However, I am myself on several platforms, on social media etc. The outcries and nasty, harsh condemnations against the camera, as soon as you knew what kind of camera it was and knew that it was not a camera aimed at anonymous photo enthusiasts, were huge, loud and very ill-considered, sometimes with insults against those who did not go along with these prejudices. Then the first experience videos came and the shitstorm died down a little. But people continued to say that the pictures were fake, that they had been artificially edited to make them appear much better, or there were statements like: "The influencers were paid." Then came more and more testimonials and example pictures from those who had not allowed themselves to be negatively influenced in the forums and on social media. People who you have known for years through the platforms, who have met with these people at analogue meetings and who therefore really know and value each other. And these people tell you about the content almost the same as the influencers, show the pictures they took with the new camera, how much fun they had with it, etc. That maybe. Not everything is perfect, but the camera was worth every cent that it cost and that you paid. Of course, the camera was not designed for existing analogue enthusiasts, and that was never claimed. Even Ricoh/Pentax has clearly identified the target group. The aim of this camera was and is to attract people to analogue photography who have previously only photographed digitally and mainly or even entirely with their smartphone, in order to make the analogue market potential larger again and, from Ricoh / Pentax's point of view, to establish themselves ahead of the competition to be able to be one step ahead of the competition as the first major corporation in the future. This clearly means that we can bring additional analog cameras onto the market that might be more suitable for existing analog enthusiasts. So I'll ask the crucial question: How would you get young people who actually have no interest in the old, dusty and completely outdated analogue photography and prefer to use their smartphone or tablet etc. to take photos, to turn to analogue photography? Wouldn't you also develop a half-format camera that every idiot can understand after a very short time, that looks a bit more spacey in style and at the same time retro, that comes across as quite high-quality, that can deliver as many pictures as possible in times of expensive film rolls, which format you want Also known from the smartphone, very good quality and, in contrast to the smartphone, delivers different images, with a completely different charm? Just put yourself in this perspective and you are guaranteed to understand what it was made for and for which main target group. And everything else, including analogue enthusiasts who have already got the camera and had a lot of fun, is on top of that for Ricoh / Pentax. Or to put it very briefly and dryly, see the camera for what it really is: A first entry-level camera for the young and future generations to make a contribution to the preservation of analogue photography over the next 10 - 20 years and to significantly boost the camera industry as a large company, so that it will (of course not selflessly) in 10 - 30 years There are still enough functional and repairable analog cameras. greetings from Germany Lutz Oh yes, how do you expect to be able to judge the quality of the images if you couldn't directly compare the results of other, sometimes similarly expensive used cameras (in half format)? Don't make the mistake of trying to compare full format with half format. And one final correction: The camera doesn't have autofocus, not even partially. The camera never automatically influences the focus setting. Only the aperture and shutter speed are automatic and the flash can be supplied automatically. The sharpness works solely via the zone focus.

    • @mikeladurner
      @mikeladurner 2 месяца назад

      Hi Lutz I understand all your points but some are not true. I said i DO NOT OWN the camera. I have two friends who own one, i commented this on some other comment. One got it for testing, the other bought it so he can test it. Both are mid class swiss dudes (a country with a shitton of money) and both had similar conclusions. I had the fun to hold it in my hands and talk face to face with these guys. We even looked at some developed shots. I never stated, that the camera is shitty or anything alike. I would never hate on those wo find you and value in it. I only wanted to start a discussion about its target audience because i dont get it and i still, even after your big text dont get the one important point. I agree, the camera sells good (even tough you dont know the actual quantity. I sold a few camera caps i made and i was sold out after a few days and the demand was far greater than what i had in mind but it was laughably small compared to other things). I get that people are still on the analoge hype, that new gear pushes this. But dude, common. A product, any product has a Value and this is usually represented by the Price to some extent. If you buy a smartphone for 50 bucks, no idiot would compare it to one that costs 700. Its a completely different league because there is so much stuff out there, that a 50 bucks phone falls flat in any regards and no one would buy a 700 one if it is not significantly better. You can buy a freaking EOS R100, some brand new Iphone, even Laptops for that price man. High tech electronics, cameras with shutters, internet connection and everything. I think: The camera is not worth the price in any way and it lives only through the analoge hype we're still in. Compare it to some DSLRs, it has a similar shutter, not much controll over the shutterspeed, a fixed lens, no autofocus, no tech. Its a simle mechanical product (if you look at it from a technical standpoint). How the hell can this cost the same as an Iphone (lower midrange) or an EOS R100 or any digital camera below 600 bucks with a sensor, image processing and everything? Please explain. It is simply less complicated and it is a huge burden to get into analog photography for many people. In addition, the film costs 15 bucks, the development costs at least 10 per roll, if you do it at home it is less expensive but a analoge newbie does not own a scanner or a second camera with a macro lens. So its extremely expensive for what it actually is. If you look at other videos, talk to people, there is a big split down the middle. Some like it, some hate it. I dont hate it but i think the price does not match the value. Therefore, i dont see a target audience that makes sense. Quote: Oh yes, how do you expect to be able to judge the quality of the images if you couldn't directly compare the results of other, sometimes similarly expensive used cameras (in half format)? Don't make the mistake of trying to compare full format with half format. Answer: I own two half frame cameras and one can shoot through very expensive modern glass. I bet you, the quality of that glass is at least on par with the pentax 17 one. The only other factor of image quality is the filmstock. And even there, half frame is fun but it kinda sucks tbh. Quote: A first entry-level camera for the young and future generations to make a contribution to the preservation of analogue photography over the next 10 - 20 years and to significantly boost the camera industry as a large company, so that it will (of course not selflessly) in 10 - 30 years There are still enough functional and repairable analog cameras. Answer: Looking trough forums, friendgroups and family, its not these people buying it, at least not around me. Mostly because no entry level camera should cost this much. I understand that there are many other categories where people spend thousands of dollars for products because they are in everyones mouth, something exciting to test or prestige items that objectively viewed fall way behind much cheaper products in the same category but get bought and collected. I'm not shot on money, its not that i'm unable to buy the camera and therefore dislike it. I try to look at everything objectively and i truely cant see why a simple point and shoot costs this much... I did not want to stir up bad discussions, its just my opinion. And i respect yours and i hope you'll find light in your financial and health situation and i truely would love for you to get that camera. From my standpoint though, i cant justify the cost for the return i get (emotional, not financial) from it. Thank you for correcting the autofocus part. Both my friends said, that the focus inside the same Zone changed and we kinda saw this on a few images of people walking 5-6 meters away. Oh , i have one more thing though. I received a few comments about the "graveyard" of old gear. Most of it is broken and no one can repair it. Whats your experience with this? I, over the last year got 9 analog cameras from etsy and ebay. Some are in my collection, some were for friends. Not a single one failed, every last button works. Am i lucky? Further, etsy repays the money if a product is faulty and does not match the description if the seller does not resolve the issue... My last statement: The internet is split. Its as always, people that like the product dont understand the others and vice versa. But i think, to add to your point "new generations, new developements in analog photography for years to come" that videos like mine are needed to keep the balance. Some people agree with me, some dont. In the end, i'm a photo nerd and i love new gear but my preferences differ from other people in similar shoes. Thank you Lutz, have a great weekend! Mike

      @@mikeladurner Ok, first of all I know Switzerland, it is only about 800 km away from me in East Frisia in Germany. 😁 When it comes to price, you can't just calculate the material costs or the high-end technology in some digital cameras. If you start from the initial situation, you miscalculate. Then a fully mechanical Rolex watch shouldn't be more expensive than an Applewatch. So it's best to say goodbye to this approach that more technology has to be more expensive. 😉 With a camera for which there are no blueprints for the mechanical processes and no one at Ricoh/Pentax has manufactured an analog camera for 20 years or more and there are no old production machines from back then, you have to take all the additional effort into account. Nowadays, only Leica and certain startup companies such as MINT produce analog cameras. All other big companies like Cosina, Olympus, Minolta, Yashica etc. haven't made anal cameras for over 20 years, if they still make cameras at all and the giant companies like Nikon or Canon similarly, except for anniversary editions. And don't think that they'll come to your aid in any way or let anyone look at their cards. So Ricoh/Pentax had to reactivate old employees as consultants, new machines had to be developed and so on. And a technically or electronically half-overloaded camera, perhaps with a menu, digital display, autofocus, etc., would be too similar to a digital camera. People also say to themselves, what's the difference to a digital camera? So then people would more than likely say: Too similar to a digital camera, so I'll stick with the digital camera. If it had become even more mechanical, for example with manual, mechanical focus, it would have become too complicated for many people. So they decided on the middle path. With something like this you have to take a lot into account and make it as easy as possible for the user. As far as costs are concerned, you will automatically start taking photos less than you would with a smartphone or a digital camera, since there is no delete button, film costs money, development costs money and you cannot check what you have photographed on the display afterwards . So the whole process slows down and maintains tension until the film is developed. In other words, you have to think about what and how to take photos, which also takes a lot of stress away from you. You learn to perceive your surroundings again and pay attention to details, instead of taking 10 - 50 pictures of the same thing, the same situation like an idiot, deleting most of them during or after digital photography and then again forward until you have basically learned nothing except to take as many recordings as possible and delete 90 - 99% again. If you ask most people who take digital photos: "How exactly did you crop the picture, what settings did you make, how did you choose your subject, how did you come up with the composition of the picture, how did you come up with the perspective, etc. etc. Most people stand there with their mouths open and start stammering , because they don't know. That's unlikely to happen. The more the camera takes away from you, the less you learn to take photos and the less you understand what you are doing. And when it comes to the cost of the camera, the brand new camera with a warranty, etc., that is the initial price, which will certainly level off as sales increase, which happens again and again with countless other products. Especially for things that haven't been produced in New for decades or that didn't exist before. I would say that those who can't afford it or don't want to have to have a little patience or make other use of the used area, which is what the camera can lead to, namely simply through its existence and the fact that people are talking about it , to encourage newcomers who have never given analogue photography a second thought to become more informed and get other analogue cameras. Could also be a credit to Pentax. For my part, I inaugurated my Revue SC3 (export model of a Chinon CM-4s) yesterday, my Praktica VLC2 a few weeks ago and later or tomorrow I will probably open my Sigma Mark 1 (replica based on the original blueprints of a Ricoh Singlex TLS, which Sigma bought from Ricoh in order to bring their very first own camera, the slightly modified Sigma Mark 1, onto the market) with film. 😉 So the fact that no one can repair old analog cameras is a bad rumor. Here in Germany alone there are quite a few, including workshops, that can do this or even specialize in it. In Japan and America or other European countries, etc. The only thing that could be a problem would be the repair costs. They start at around €100 and can reach four figures, which brings us back to the advantages of the Pentax with brand new and a guarantee. For my part, I have around 70% cameras that work perfectly and 30% that need repairs, which I can afford again at some point. And if you keep buying the same analogue cameras because the others don't work and then throw away the broken ones because you can't or don't want to repair them, you're depriving others who might even be able to repair the cameras themselves Cameras gone. If it means fueling the culture of throwing something away instead of having it repaired, it should be something to think about and if you add it all up, the Pentax might not be that expensive after all. 😉 By the way, I get my analogue treasures via the German classifieds platform, which until a few months ago was still part of eBay Germany. I can then drive by the private sellers if they live nearby and then test them on site. I hope I haven't forgotten anything important to answer. Then I wish you a nice weekend and as long as you come from Switzerland and speak German, we can also talk in German and I don't need to torture the translator any further. 😁 Lutz

    First of all, great presentation and another great video work, Mike. I read a lot about this camera, I looked at and compared analog cameras because I want to get another analog camera. I was intrigued and at the same time glad that film photography was being supported I completely agree with you that it's not for beginners, although they write that it is intended for people who want to achieve a more creative photo than the one made with a phone (That's how they wrote it, literally) I've been using manual mode a lot lately even on my digital camera, so I don't know... I'm glad you made a video on this topic and it's nice to read everyone's thoughts on this. Once again excellent work, Mike

      Hi Arnela :) Yeah, the fact that someone finally pushes the analog scene is awesome. Gives me hope :) I get the creative aspect to a certain degree. Its smaller than a polaroid, its light and easy used. Nevertheless, the sentence they wrote does not add up in my honest opinion. The creative aspect can either be the framing, the motive or the style, right? The framing/motive are the same, no matter what camera. The only thing different is the style which is actually given by the filmstock, not the camera. Dead End. If yout consider the final image as the creative product, then i disagree even more since any phone has filters, film emulators and so on. I made a big comment below while answering some other person, maybe have a look at this one aswell, there are some more things i dont get. The final thing is: Its a mechanical analog camera with autofocus (but only zone), a fixed lens and bad resolution. The mechanical shutter is not controllable, right? Even 30 year old cameras had this figured out. Its old tech. Same as autofocus. Its a fixed lens, integrated system, its way easier to focus and even cheap webcams can focus pretty fast - does not mean that it should only match the worst webcam but its tech thats very well understood and available. How can this be so damn expensive? I look at products from a value perspective. If i can buy a canon mirrorless for 700 with a lens that shoots raw, video, has a flash, modes like av/tv and full controll of the focus and maybe even some kind of tracking, a display, a inner display inside the viewfinder and a processor, lithium battery and many more things, how can this Pentax 17 cost so much? If its only about the size, there are many compact cameras with similar functionality (digital) for half the price. They are so much more complicated... I think the pentax is only a camera for these people who love analog photography and have waited for a new model. As soon as a big name came out with one, no matter the functionality or strangeness of it, they all had to pull the trigger and the manufacturer knew this. Its a statement of these analog shooters, maybe even a symbol i guess, lead by hype and reviews that mostly disregard any comparison to other cameras in the same price range... Thanks for commenting Arnela, have a great Weekend!

      @@mikeladurnerThanks for the reply, Mike. I read the comments, opinions are divided. I completely agree with you, the price is too high for this camera and what it offers, and I think that the people or "youth" for whom the camera is intended as they stated in their description, will rather buy some other equipment or something like that. Looking objectively there are a lot of cheaper analog cameras that are really in fantastic condition that give the full feel of good old analog photography. Thank you again and have a wonderful weekend :)

      Hi there, thanks for commenting. I disagree with the graceyard thingy. I own 9 vintage analog cameras at the moment and i bought all of them from etsy/ebay. Every single one works 100%, not one has ever had a failure and even if it would have one, at least in Switzerland, if you buy something from etsy and it does not match the description (functionality and so on), etsy returns the money. I had that happen with a few 3D printer parts. Ebay over here has some policies in place aswell. You must have been quite unlucky if you got a bad one. Further, if you can find a camera with 10 different offers that are cheap, go for a middle one. The cheapest of the cheap may, as you say, have a few flaws. Anyhow, i could have bought 7 cameras for the price of the pentax and still come out with money to spare. I dont own the camera but i know 2 people that do. I talked with them, one got it sponsored and the other one is a collector. I said that the quality of the camera is great. I said that the resulting image resolution is bad and i dont see a 600 bucks camera shooting half frame except for „creativity“ and „easy to carry“ purposes. If you shoot half frame, at 28 millimeter, the quality is mostly dependent on the filmstock, every 1.4/2.8 lens from canon, olympus and nikon offers quality beyond anything that is noticeable on half frame. Thats just my take. If you are creative and have money to spare and find joy in using it for creative reasons, even just to own it, i‘m happy for you. If you balance it against modern tech and compare it to old film cameras, it is magnitudes too expensive. Thanks again, i like your opinion, have a great weekend :)

    I've bought it and I'm on my second roll of film now. I'll share my perspective. I've been a purely digital photographer in last 20 years or so (and before that I've only shoot a few analog point and shoots and I didn't really know what I was doing). My way to take photos was always somewhat slow and contemplative. I enjoy not only the effect but also the process of taking photos. It has some kinda of therapeutic effect on me. Understanding what's going on in the frame, knowing how the ray of light coming into the lens turns into an image on the sensor. In recent years I've mostly shoot on manual lenses. I couldn't care less about most of automation modern cameras provide. For some time I was tempted by analog photography and when Ricoh announced Pentax 17 I thought along the lines of "well, someone decided to make a new analog camera, gotta give them a chance". I was not super enthusiastic by the fact that Pentax 17 is semi-automatic and does not give full manual control. But considering my inexperience with the film, maybe that's for the best. Otherwise I am afraid I would waste a few rolls. If they continue and release a fully manual SLR, I'll probably buy that and sell Pentax 17. However, I gotta admit that it's actually very pleasant to shoot. The viewfinder is phenomenal for this price. Thanks to it's magnesium alloy casing it's also incredibly light. Much lighter than any of my digital cameras. There's just no reason to leave it at home, I can always stash it into my backpack and I won't even feel it's there until I need it. I think it's a pretty good "everyday carry" camera, despite its limitations. So, I'd say it's not a camera for analog photography experts, but for someone who's got experience with digital and wants to try analog... it's doing its job quite well.

    • @mikeladurner
      @mikeladurner 2 месяца назад

      First of all, thanks for sharing! I totally get your approach as i enjoy the whole process very much aswell. Therapeutic is exactly the correct word. Switching between my modern cameras and my completely manual ones from the past is so cool, i really enjoy every part of photography. The fact that the camera is very small and easy to carry is definitely something worth thinking about and might have slipped my mind since i always carry my backpack or find myself in a car with at least one camera. I'm kinda intrigued by the Pentax 17, dont get me wrong. I just think selling it at that price point places it in a league with cameras that outperform it in nearly any way i guess. I'm very happy for you, glad you found an everyday-carry camera that brings joy to you. I truly hope that competitors will arise and the film photography once again shines supported by modern tech! What a cool future that would be :) Thanks for commenting! Have a great weekend :)

      I formulated my response badly. Sorry, english is not my first language :) What i wanted to say is: The mechanics inside the camera are well known, mechanical mostly. It has very limited functions. It is analog. No sensor, the filmstock is responsible for the hardest part. There are many digital cameras that are brilliant, full automatic, full switchable lenses, cameras like the EOS R100 for example which is actually cheaper, with a 18-55 lens. What i wanted to say is: I do not understand why this analog camera costs as much as the R100 even though the internals are way easier to manufacture and there is not nearly as much tech/software and imageprocessing. When i can buy a R100 for $550, that has complicated electronics, shutter and everything, why is the pentax with simpler mechanics and way less functionality as expensive? Most comments on other videos always compare the pentax to a 1300 eqivalent camera from nowadays (digital) but thats nonsense. The functionality of the camera is very limited compared to what i wrote above. If the camera would be fully manual capable and supported good autofocus maybe with a lens bajonett that is made for changing lenses, then it is comparable to the R100 (even though the internals are still less complex). But the Pentax is more comparable to some modern digital point and shoot and there are cameras for under $300. I'm waiting for a film camera with the same functionality (shutter, apperture, lens, timer, autofocus, fullframe) like any 550D or R100 has for a price, similar to these cameras. Something like the EOS7 for example but not 20 years old and with new materials and todays standards for shutter etc. As i said - the camera is intriguing but still, the functionality is really compromised compared to a R100 (yeah it is digital but making something alike in analog would be even easier)... Dont you think? Cheers

    • @mikeladurner
      @mikeladurner 2 месяца назад

      oh and - i think the price is especially high because there is a giant hype on analog photography. I see that and i understand that. And i understand that people buy that stuff. If i look at it without any emotions, just functionality compared to modern tech, the value is in my opinion below the price.

      Sadly, this is not exactly true. I did the "hack" multiple times. This so called hack is just a parameter that gets switched. Id does change the way it sends/receives indeed but it does not up the power. In the meantime, i had a friend from Chicaco over here in Switzerland and we headed out for some drone sessions. As mine topped out at 400m most of the time, way less with foliage in between, he could easily go 1000m plus easily... we then measured the rf power and did not see any increase with the "fcc hack". His original avata setup showed many times more power at least in comparison to mine, which is a bummer.

    • @Fitandover40
      @Fitandover40 2 месяца назад

      I have seen videos here in France of the "hack" and they seem to get at least 30k/h more than without, not sure about the distance. They did say that it is crucial that you turn on the devices in a particular order otherwise it won't work. This is kind of a deal breaker for me since there are a lot cheaper drones that can do the same. I am considering to buy this drone but i do not want to loose video connection at 100mt as i did with a cheaper whoop i had. Funny that other youtubers paid by DJI never mention this "small" issue. • @AxVxI
      @AxVxI 7 месяцев назад

      @@mikeladurner The big differences, are REALLY ... very small. While the story of my decision, way back when, is true, it was a matter of preference in my approach to learning at the time, and not a slight or bias against Canon, which I just play it up as occasionally, half poking fun at the long-time rivalry between the two companies, each of which I have a deep appreciation for, in having carved out distinctively unique innovations which have often-unassumingly created entire domains of standards & conventions. An all-time favorite is the camera I began learning to shoot 16mm with, and which I credit for having co-created (along with Kodak EASTMAN Ektachrome 7240 Film) the SCHEDULING of Television News for the better part of a QUARTER CENTURY; The CANON SCOOPIC 16. What they defined, in combination, (be it unintentionally), was an industry wide workflow, which is immediately recognizable by three words: "FILM AT ELEVEN." It's funny that I also owe my starting into photography to Canon, making the ELPH APS Film camera. I got put into a a rush-job in 1998, with a three-week deadline, to do the two-week European Tour and release kick-off for the (then, soon-to-be) new Rancid album "Life Won't Wait." As usual, Vic Ruggiero (of The Slackers, in New York) had recorded the studio organ tracks for the record. But some not-well-coordinated scheduling put the tour way the hell far from whee and when he'd be available. If I was going to be schlepping across Europe in a Tour Bus again for two weeks, I wanted to have a camera with me, and one small enough to slip in my pocket easily. I took the only really off-the-clock time I had away from prepping for the tour, to practice using it at my regular weekend DJ gig. Stuff came out immediately impressive, and kept getting better the more I used it. And that became a "thing" which continued on, until inevitable hit. The "AI" was pissing me off, more and more, automating what it "thought" was "best," and overriding what I wanted to do. A friend, Jerry, who owned CRES (Coast Recording Equipment Supply), had a spare showcase which he had started putting a few of his manual 35mm cameras up for sale in. And that was exactly what I wanted to learn. How everything works, having to do everything manually, nothing automatic. Talking with Jerry, telling him what I wanted to do, and was looking for in a manual 35mm SLR, eventually narrowed the field down to two: The Canon F-1 and the Nikon F2, an an all-metal, mechanically-controlled (springs, gears, levers), manual focus SLR with manual exposure control. Side by side the Nikon looked eminently more complicated, daunting, and difficult to learn. But looks can e deceiving, and I wanted the best, experienced opinion. So I asked Jerry. Naturally the cameras were very close to being on par, and it would really boil down to a matter of preference, and what I wanted to do, or wanted from a camera. I told him straight up how things looked, and that I wanted the camera which has the most to have to learn, and the most to learn from, which would be more difficult, but also more enriching. And with that in mind, the Nikon appeared to be what would take the prize. He said, for wanting to do that, absolutely, the Nikon was definitely the better choice for both intentions. It was an extremely critical choice back then, far more than today, because the decision would be a commitment to the lenses and lens mount for the camera system for quite a while to come. I didn't know it then, but my outlook was following right in line with something Richard Feynman had long-since pointed out. "As I get older, I realize being wrong (screwing up, making mistakes) isn't a bad thing like they teach you in school. It is an opportunity to learn something." There is no "fail" in this. Only more to learn from, in the best way, by direct experience. If there is any failure that is worth any consideration at all, it's the degree to which it inspires to go further. Glad to see the spirit being kept alive here. Cheers

      @AxVxI 7 месяцев назад

      @@mikeladurner For beginning in the present, the difference is negligible, and it may actually be a better entry point in adjusting from a context in which film is all but archaic, while dominant digital photography technologies have their own very sophisticated complexities which require a very different kind of effort to "back-pedal" away from, without rejecting. In that regard, and especially having come into a fabulous opportunity in winning the AE-1, it is much better suited for the purpose than the Nikon F2 would be. The overall availability in the present market, is much more favorable than what it was in the late 90's. So developing an enthusiasm, and wanting to take it further back to the sort of most vital and involved learning of the mechanical operations with a camera such as the F2 further down the line, is a much more open option. It can be done very inexpensively by comparison with the peak of the "film era," when a brand decision was a commitment which would be locked in for quite a while. I love both technologies, and enjoy finding ways to mix and combine them. One of the most recent wow-I-love-it discoveries has been a previously unknown (to me) super-high point in Canon optics that broke through just a few years before I was born, and they took to manufacturing a mind-blowing series of a few lenses designed to really accomplish a rare degree of quality, since they were intended to be used for three different sorts of cameras, with two different formats; 16mm film, and 1" surface "Vidicon" vacuum tubes (which were not only for television broadcasting, but also ultra high resolution scientific, medical and industrial imaging). The 1" Vidicon camera tube surface dimensions and size were used as the model for developing the Four Thirds digital photography sensor as an open "standard," in 2010, which has continued on into development right up to the minute. So I'm able to shoot 4K with near-peerless quality optics using a truly parafocal (which translates to "expensive as f*ck in modern lenses) high speed zoom, that was made before I was born, and was easy to obtain at an insanely "reasonable" price. There are all sorts of wondrous adventure waiting to be discovered. Love the process, and don't worry about whatever superficial measures people use for calling something "success." My best recommendation is to keep on with the AE-1. It is a fab camera, and I would love love the hell out of getting to learn it. If and when interests draw attention closer to wanting to get down into the archaic level of how things worked when they were entirely mechanical, then start looking into picking up an old F2 (which is so much less expensive these days).

      Absolutely, I couldn't agree more with the sentiment about embracing mistakes as opportunities to learn. It's truly the essence of growth and improvement. As for cameras, I do love those with manual controls and historical significance, i actually love all of them. I got some suppliers trough sponsorships, i can probably get an F2 for testing. There's something incredibly special about the craftsmanship and artistry of older cameras, each with its own story to tell. Whether it's a vintage manual SLR or a classic film camera, they all hold a unique charm and value in preserving the history and tradition of photography. Thanks for sharing your experiences and thoughts on this!

      Yeah, i guess i'll stick with my AE1 for the moment, got many projects for customers going on, i can only allocate like 5% of my photographic journey to analog photography, which is kinda sad. I'll soon dive into the different cameras, their inner workings and so on. I really love the whole thing - analog cameras, every camera probably, the developing, old chemicals, new chemicals, scanning, the whole thing. I'll surely keep it up :) Have a great day and thanks for talking! Cheers

    Excellent work, Mike! You explained and presented the development of the film very skillfully, it is really fascinating. I really love photography and enjoy your videos which are really informative. It must have been awesome experience, I'm glad that's the topic of your videos. When I look at the whole process it seems easy, because you presented it so well. It's a lot of work and time :) You deserve praise for your work. The photos turned out really wonderful, the B&W photos are real work of art! Congratulations Mike :)

      Thank you very much Arnela! I like how the photos turned out. I shot them with my AE1, i really love that camera, so simple but so nice! The process was very funny, i nearly messed up and spilled all the chemicals but it came out great in the end :) Thank you for being such a supporter! You're awesome!

    Another great video, Mike! Definitely something to learn! For me, that process is something completely new and very interesting. Analogue photography and the process itself is a whole "science" that you presented brilliantly! Really amazing work!

    Well, this is really something. Beautifully presented. When I took photos with an analog camera, I didn't think about this process at all. Now I'm intrigued because I have a films with wonderful photos that I didn't even think to transfer to the computer, because somehow they weren't even important anymore! You really got us thinking about analog photography, and that's a good thing! Amazing work, Mike :)

    Another great video work,Mike! Limited number of shots is a nice challenge. It's interesting when we have to think about every shot we're going to take, unlike a digital photo. And there is also the waiting process, which gives charm and thrill to the analog photography process. Really great work Can't wait to see your creations :)

      Thank you Arnela Yep, thinking about every shot is such a cool contrast to digital photography. Slowing down, thinking, framing, shooting with excitement, i dig that!

    Film photography is a lot more expensive these days then what it used to be in the 90's. But it is a lot of fun. I shoot Ilford Delta 400 on a Fujica STX-1 with a 50mm lens. It is quite an adventure.

      Yeah, sadly i only jumped recently on the hype train 🤗 I‘ve yet to try Delta 400. How is it compared to hp5?

    • @janvanderwalt
      @janvanderwalt 8 месяцев назад

      @@mikeladurner I believe the grain on the film is different. HP5 has the original or classic grain whereas with Delta, they use T-grain which is from the new chemical formula used to make the emulsion on the film. T-grain is smoother than the classic, or so I'm told. I've never used HP5
