Hi I’ve just found your various videos two weeks since left ankle fusion surgery. I’m currently lin a splint covered in bandages and I’m due to have stitches removed next week and have a new cast. The journey so far has been ok, plenty of pain in the first ten days or so but now starting to ease thankfully. Like you, I’m hopeless on crutches so I’m using my new knee scooter to get around - what a great investment!! I also have a walker and I can now put a tiny amount of weight on my ankle when I’m using the walker. Thanks for all the practical support and advice in your videos. Greetings from Manchester in the UK.

It took me a few years to be able to walk on all types of terrain. It has been 11 years since my ankle fusion and I really don’t even realize anymore that my ankle is fused.

I was able to get a prescription for a knee cart but I tried 4 medical supply places and they didn't carry them. The last place was atraight with me and said that they don't carry them to rent out as the insurance companies most always reject the request. I had surgery only 5 days away and no scooter. Purchasing online was 280 for the big one I would need and I wouldn't get it in time. I heard about a church that loaned out medical equipment as a ministry, free of charge. I found what I needed. The Lord provided. In your planning, call around well in advance of your surgery. Ask for the prescription early. Get the approval from your insurance company or buy one in time if you have to. Obviously, also call churches or your local Aging and Disability Center to get help in locating a knee scooter. There is no better way to get around. I'm a big person and over 60. I could not have managed on crutches. Im currently at 5 weeks since my procedure and wearing a cast - No weight bearing at all.

I’m week 11 after left hind foot fusion with nail inserted up through sole of foot and 5 screws. 6 hour op. Week 5 before I got good nights sleep. Hurray for pain killers.Non weight bearing for six weeks then 6 weeks 50% weight bearing. Boot takes a bit of getting used to.Lucky here in Scotland that walking frame, toilet seat extender, crutch for steps and wheelchair to help move room to room were supplied on loan by our National Health Service. I found lifting myself up onto couch arm then onto wheelchair reduced the effort of getting up from couch seat. Week six had to replace Walker for a taller model but as hospital is only 5 minutes away not a problem. Walking has improved greatly this week and hopefully can do without Walker next week and manage with stick. X-ray and check up end of June . One piece of advice after op is if your old shoes were worn on heel and stretched because foot was misshaped as was mine then bin them and look for good shoes/trainers with good ankle support. A few good web sites out there to help. Good luck

My fusion has been a success for the past 10 years. However, I do have a couple of friends that have had total ankle replacement that have also done very well. One of those friends had his right ankle replaced instead of fused, because he was worried about being able to drive with his right . each patient has to weigh the pros and cons of ankle fusion or ankle replacement surgery and also listen very closely to the advice of the surgeon. These surgeons usually know what they are doing because they’ve had a lot of experience.

Thank you! Having my fusion Tuesday. You made me feel like maybe I’ll be able to walk my dogs again. It’s my 3rd surgery. Broke my ankle bad.Got MRSA after the first surgery so had to have 2nd and my doctor removed my hardware because my bones were healed. MRSA took long to get rid of so it took my ankle cartilage and then my ankle collapsed so that’s why I’m having fusion surgery. I’m not a candidate for replacement. I would be after a year or so but I’m going to see if I’m like you and doing well with fusion only. I keep reading how fusion causes arthritis in other foot joints but you seem good👍thanks again. I’m having an outer fixation no inner hardware this time because it got infected before. It’s a big metal ring around the ankle with pins going through my skin so that should be interesting. I’m 54 and haven’t been able to walk since June. I get bored but I cook and bake that helps.

I'm 23 years old and going to be getting my ankle fused next week and am excited to finally get to walking again. I got in a motorcycle accident February 2022 and broke my talus, tibia, fibula, femur and thumb. I've been non weight bearing using crutches and a wheelchair for almost a full year. My right leg looks like a spaghetti noodle because of all the muscle atrophy. One thing that I don’t think I ever addressed in my videos was whether a person could drive or not having a fused right ankle. One of my best friends, who is my age we went to school together had to have ankle surgery on his right ankle, and I told him what I did, and that mine was fused, and he chose to have a total ankle replacement for the main reason that he did not think he could drive with a fused right ankle. I actually had never thought about that because my fused ankle was my left one and my right ankle works great so I didn’t even think about that. I guess I would’ve put more thought process into what I should do with ankle surgery with a right ankle. I would recommend to everyone that would be having a right angle of fused to check with people that I’ve had right ankle fusion and see how well they are able to drive or see whether they’ve been able to come up with accommodations to help them with driving. I am not recommending ankle fusion over ankle replacement. It was just that I felt it was my best choice. If my ankle had been straight and look like it could be replaced very easily I might’ve gone with an ankle replacement. But, it has been almost 10 years 10 years this summer that I had my ankle fusion and things are still going great for me. In fact, I kind of laugh about this, but I do still see improvement every day or every month in my way of getting around and doing my chores. I also have macular degeneration so I am legally blind and I am not typing this message myself. I am reading it to my phone so there may be a lot of mistakes in this message that I want to apologize for right now. I really hope you do well with your recovery. It sounds like you have been through so much and I will pray for you and I noticed that you said you have been praying also and I think that is a great step towards recovery. Best wishes to you and best wishes on your recovery.

Ankle fusion is major surgery. Many people that have gone through ankle Fusion surgery say that their surgery lasted somewhere around four hours. So, the body is going to take some time to recover from a major surgery like that. Also you are having to use other muscles that haven’t been used in a long time because you have to get around without putting weight on that ankle. Hopefully you will start feeling better within the next few months. It does take a very long time for ankle fusion to heal. Also, it has taken me and others a few years to be able to walk around and do things that I want to do on various Terrain.

This was so helpful. I have lots of foot/ankle problems and recently bought a pair of 928 shoes on a podiatrist's recommendation for Peroneal Tendonitis pain. It is unbelievable the difference these shoes made. Almost immediately the pain I've been having for 7 months under the outside of my foot and ankle went away. That is nothing short of miraculous to me. I am actually able to walk through a grocery store, on those hard concrete floors, without any pain now. I've just ordered a second pair of these. I want to keep one pair nice and clean to wear for nice occasions, and have another pair for everyday wear. And I'm going to get a THIRD pair just to wear in the house. I have one question: How do you preserve the leather on these shoes? I can already see scuff marks and wrinkles in the leather. How do you keep the leather from drying out and cracking? Can mink oil be used on them? I have the light tan/gray color 928 and I've been afraid to try conditioning them with the mink oil paste. I think it might darken the light color of the shoes. What do you use? Would appreciate your advice. Thanks!

Walking is not easy with this boot on but theres no way I could walk in a regular shoe (I'm using cruches). Whats next??? October will be 8 months and hunting season. I sure hope I'll be able to walk around with out pain. No one has explained things like you have and I'm happy I found your videos. Anymore info you could give me would be greatly appreciated. Hello! I just had ankle surgery a week ago and I know what you are talking about. That pain after the nerve block wore off is the worst pain I experienced in my whole life.

I had the exact opposite experience. I had been walking on bone on bone, etc for over 15 years due to severe Rheumatoid Arthritis. My pain is gone after surgery. No pain after nerve block dissipated. I guess I'm a lucky one. Sorry to all those who didn't. 😢 I think having RA for 32 years throughout my body has given me quite a tolerance for pain.

Have you ever tried those mbt shoes?

I have tried a few shoes that really had the rocker bottom. I am not sure if they were the brand that you just asked me about though. I always look for shoes that have a little bit of a rocker on the bottom of the shoe. I am still ordering and using the shoes that I have described in this video. They seem to best for me…….

My surgeon recommended Hoka One One Bondi 7. All Hoka brand shoes have rocker soles. Most comfortable shoes I’ve ever worn. 😁😁😁

@@anothergoldilocks1077 thanks for you reply. I am currently saving for a pair. I tend to trip with my current shoes and I am hoping I will trip less with these. If not then atleast I will be comfortable when tripping! Side question - my brother had read a book titled "born to run". He us to have troubles with pains in his legs especially his knees. He said that he. Noticed that since wearing "primitive" shoes his foot muscles increased, and his leg and knee pain disappeared. Oh and his balance dramatically improved. Have you heard anything good about these barefoot shoes (or minimalist shoes)?

@@nobodyisprfct Hello! Good, that you’re saving towards purchasing a pair of Hokas! I hope you’ll like them. 😁 Yes, I’m familiar with the “earth/natural foot wear shoes”. I think it depends greatly upon an individual’s non-surgical foot whether this type of foot wear is appropriate. They definitely would not be suitable for post surgery foot fusion patients as the most important feature of shoes for them is a shoe with a rocker sole. That’s because, of course, due to the flexibility lost in having the ankle/foot fused. Hope this helps. ☺️

Thanks for this video clip. I am struggling on foot wear for my fused ankle. I was never told about buying shoes a bit wider for my fused ankle.

How far can you walk now and do you have any pain?

    • @journeythroughanklefusion7532
      @journeythroughanklefusion7532 3 года назад

I can walk as far as I want to. I have no pain at all. Since it has been eight years since my ankle fusion, it seems that I can do more and more every year. I really don’t have limitations because of the ankle fusion.

Had a ankle fusion done 2 years ago due to an old motorcycle accident. I’m 54 and I’m fairly active. Poking around online looking for info on shoes. I may check out your shoe of choice. I don’t like memory foam cause they get stinky.

I am glad I found your video. I am going through a very similar experience. I‘ve been getting shots, therapy and acupuncture. Everything but weight loss! I used to make videos for orthopedic surgery companies so I am leery of some implants due to their complexity. I have given myself a year to shape up or ship out. I will turn 60 next summer and want to be more fit by then. I will check out the r3st of you videos. Thanks!
