Just perfect. Love it 😍
Performing this on a tuba is sacrilegious. Euphonium is the only option
Love 1 and 3, suspect 2 would be more convincing if it were played properly, and at a less pedestrian tempo. 4 sounds so ordinary by comparison - wonder what it would sound like with bass trombone and tuba in 8ves.
Bass tuba, by far. No comparison.
I wlii give this a SUPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR out of 10
Why is Fidel Castro's son aka the president of Canada playing the clarinet
That is an oboe my good man, not a clarinet
Ahahaahah NOOO 🤣
Yes, it is 😅
Originally Ravel arranged this movement for F Tube, but personally I think sounds much colorful, balanced and clear with the german baritone horne.
Great performance, I'm sure but it does serve to remind me why I'm not a huge fan of much of Richard Strauss's output.
Thank you for this interesting comparison. I went to see Turandot at Wiener Staatsoper the other week, and the sound of a Cimbasso makes a big difference in terms of fitting into the trombone section and giving a good snarl to the bass line.
bass trombone ?
Probably contrabass
I’d be interested to hear this solo played on one of those euphonium sized F Tubas
Красота 😊
Many thanks 🙏❤️
It would be easier to play with a flugelhorn. Yes ok, it's not the same sound because of the harmonics. But it is much more practical to transport the instrument on your bike. All joking aside, this tuba player is exceptional.
That first excerpt is very intimidating
Yes, it is! Ahahah
Mamma mia sta tuba 🔥
Love you 🥰
None of the four have the best combination, tuba and euphonium 😢
В 11 цифре не хватает одного такта
What’s the actual name of the track at 19:18? It’s not “difficult”, as searching that by itself brings up another track
The track is difficult 2. Some soundtracks ate divided in different parts
@@tubagabrii Yeah you’re the 🐐
Thanks 🥹❤️
Alessandro fossi numero 1 in assoluto
Eh già!
Ok, ma Awaken?
Abbi pazienza mico mio, un giorno lo farò ahahah
Meraviglioso! 😍
I am a tuba player and I think the euphonium is the best choice for this solo. We are all used to hearing the thin, strained sound of the tuba's high register on this solo and the guy in the video plays it perfectly. But, the risk is high. Many tuba players have slipped here and ruined their careers and reputations (not me, fortunately). One famous professional in New York used to have it written into his contracts that he would not have to play this solo. The risk is not necessary when the solo sounds so good on the euphonium, an instrument whose range suits it much better.
I completely disagree. Bydlo is not even that difficult of a solo compare to what other brass instruments have to handle, refusing to play the most famous and prominent solo on your instrument js ridiculous. It’s like a trumpet player saying they wouldn’t play Mahler 3 post horn solo/alpine symphony/Mahler 7, a trombone player saying they wouldn’t play bolero/mahler3 or a horn player saying they wouldn’t play Dvorak9. In addition musically speaking, a “strained” sound most definitely would better represent a ox car pulling cargos in the mud. That’s what emphasizes the struggle which the ox is in.
@@dingrobin7924the argument comes from the fact that the piece was not orchestrated to be played on a modern bass tuba in F, but a French tuba in C, one step above a euphonium.
French tuba wins!
Common low brass W
W?
@@tubagabrii The low brass is very good
@@thenoisyeater oh! Many thanks ❤️
Tuba is cranking away at it!
The tuba is me, so thanks dude 😉❤️❤️
the ophicleide has its characteristic "buzzing and gritty" bass sound, meanwhile the tuba is too smooth and woofy. even with 1 ophicleide and a tuba it sounds much better than 2 tubas, let alone with 2 ophicleides or even paired with a serpent.
Complimenti!!
Grazie tante 😁
Meraviglioso 🤩🔥
Grazie agne 🥰❤️
This playlist is amazing you deserve more subs❤
Many thanks ❤️ Share if you want 😁
Really wish I was not the only tuba player in my band…
Man I want a serpent
Okay, I did it on my ophicleide! ruclips.net/video/Wc0XxEXl0Cg/видео.html&ab_channel=jomarluke
F-tuba can play this part if good player used it. Eb- tuba maybe, CC and BBb are not useful for such passages. However Euph, baritone and French 6 valved C- euphonium are more regular historical. Ravel wrote for 6 valved C- euphonium, not for F- bass.
Euphonium and German Baritone were best; French's tuba is also interesting option
A slight miss from the 1st trumpet in the concert B, but that is an extremely difficult part because it is played very softly.
I just played this in my final college concert and indeed that high B was an absolute monster to overcome cleanly. Quiet, clean, high AND agonizingly slow; everything painful on a trumpet. Entirely worth it for one of the most beautiful brass chorales ever written.
Ive listened to this many times and just realized theres a cracked note on the great gate of kiev: 5:34
This is a live recording so it is pretty normal 😅
One Oktave deeper!!! Tu + CFg + Timp + Cassa Bulls don’t sing Mozart and don’t dance Ballett. Even Ravel lacks!!!
Was this piece of music played by someone using a bass saxophone?
I vote for number one. That big horn's fat, veiled tone is perfect. Lovely sound!
Im interested on playing this with my orchestra, but I have a question... Its legal to play it on a concert?
If you buy it legally, Why not?
Yea, but there is not some issue with Nintendo ? 😅

I wish you labelled them.
This passage represents something very specific and particular, which is entirely lost on modern audiences, but would have been plainly and immediately understood in Berlioz' time and place. The Dies Iræ is the Gregorian chant sequence for the Requiem, i.e. mass for the dead. In France in earlier centuries, Gregorian chant was sung quite slowly, and even more slowly for more solemn liturgies. It was sung in unison by men's voices, and in the 19th century normally supported by ophicleides or serpents playing in unison. Berlioz specifically refers to this in his orchestration treatise's entry about the serpent, saying how terrifying the instrument sounded when playing the Dies Iræ at funerals. So, with four bassoons taking the place of a men's chorus, and two ophicleides/serpents playing along, intoning this chant melody slowly, in unison without harmony, accompanied only by tolling bells, Berlioz is providing a quite literal and realistic depiction of a funeral of his time and place. So, per this movement's program, the poet, having arrived in hell upon his death, after seeing the beloved he murdered among the denizens of hell, suddenly finds himself viewing events back on earth -- the transition depicted by the brief, quiet unison passage in the lower strings -- only to witness his own funeral. The impact on a French audience of that time would have been an immediate and unambiguous understanding, and quite frightening.
Berlioz on the serpent: "The truly barbaric tone of this instrument would be much better suited for the bloody cult of the Druids than for that of the Catholic church, where it is still in use -- as a monstrous symbol for the lack of understanding and coarseness of taste and feeling which have governed the application of music in our churches since times immemorial. Only one case is to be excepted: masses for the dead, where the serpent serves to double the dreadful choir of the Dies Iræ. Here its cold and awful blaring is doubtless appropriate; it even seems to assume a character of mournful poetry when accompanying this text, imbued with all the horrors of death and the revenge of an irate God." -- Treatise on Instrumentation, trans. Theodore Front, p. 348.
The last example -- obviously on the instrument that transcriber Ravel had in mind -- is the only one in which the player actually observes all the score's articulation and expression marks.
Agreed, although I don't care for the vibrato, it's a very nice performance. And this is the 6-valve C tuba Ravel had in mind. Christhard Gössling also sounds good. Super player.
nice this is such a amazing soundtrack
super helpful thank you!! what VSTs are you using? :)
Many thanks ❤ I use Noteperformer 4, in this video was version 3
The second recording was horrible!! That raspy bassoon really killed the timing and just overall sound.
I prefer a tuba or euphonium on this. :)
😍😍😍😍
I'm probably biased given I play the tuba but the tuba version was the best.
