"Stop making mud.". That's what I really need!
Thank you. Getting in to miniature painting and got my first color wheel today. Saved me a ton of time not searching for better videos because yours is the best.
Thanks! Glad it was helpful! 😊
Thank you for this explanation!!!! You made it so simple and easy to understand
Thank you so much 😍
Nincs felirat , ezért nem tudom fordítani !!
I wish I could fine a color wheel that is tuned more to Photography.
Thank you Ashley 😊
Sometimes I want muddy!
The shades will drive you crazy!
Water color is much easier than other mediums, cheap and lot of colors.
Watercolor can be tricky at times but there are a lot of things to love about it!
This is one of the best tutorials on mixing peach. Most of us have never heard of Reeves watercolors and didn’t know this shade of peach exsisted!
It's a lovely color! Glad the video was helpful 🙂
Thank you so much! Very good explanation.
Glad it was helpful!
This is such a helpful and informative video. Thank you so much!!
Thank you so much for addressing this, ive seen too many multiplication type charts and thought the same thing and Im really new to watercolors. I think Ive realized mostly that as long as you don't mix 2 or 3 complementary colors together you shouldn't be making mud. I think im understanding that correctly anyway..thanks for such an informative video. I realize you didn't go into depth here with paint names/brands and that it was a concept you were addressing instead..that's what im getting out of it anyway...not sure why some are throwing shade on your techniques and findings...thank you!!
How do I use the wheel to know what colour wash or glaze to put over the top of something too bright to calm the colour down
You can use a color's complement (the color directly opposite on the color wheel) to mute it if it is too bright.
This was helpful. Thank you. I just started watercolor 5 months ago and have been using Canson. After seeing your demo I think I'll try some others. The colors look washed out on the Canson. I do prefer a smooth surface. Thanks again.
I'm so happy to find a RUclips "How To" video on How to Read a Color Wheel For Artists (Pocket Color Wheel). I just purchased a new "Pocket Color Wheel" on 8-6-2024 at Hobby Lobby as my old "Pocket Color Wheel" stopped working at some point (Somehow it is stuck and does NOT move at all. Perhaps something got between the wheel that glued it stuck). ALSO I happen to be one of your paid students and now finishing up on Summer Zooms 2024 (various video topics on color mixing) and the beginning watercolor module.
Hi Cathy! Glad you enjoyed the video!
How necessary is it for us to have two yellows. I hear a lot of talk about split primaries and after cheaping out and not buying red (only a magenta-like colour) or a warmer yellow (I got permanent yellow deep from vg), I realise I can't make the brighter oranges and such so I definitely need a red but I'm not sure if I should buy another yellow too or if it's unnecessary
The yellow you have will be great for mixing oranges. The main thing to consider is what kind of greens you want to be able to mix. If you like muted more natural looking greens (like Sap Green for example), you can mix those with a warm yellow. If you want to mix a bright green like a kelly green, you will need a cooler yellow that leans more towards green instead of orange.
Thank you for explanation tell me what color would go with dark teal please
this video was a waste of my time.
Why stick around and make a post then?
Nope, rather have 1 sheet than umpteen pieces of card, old school wins here for me
Very helpful! Thanks!!!
I love fountain pens too, have you tried the Benu, Lilly of the Incas?
Very very informstive
At home I love my multiple ceramic options, so I’m modular at my little desk. On the go, I supplement my travel palette with Yupo (or similar plastic sheet) cut to the size of my travel book or smaller. That way I have a mixing sheet specific to the project until I’m done. I have different travel palettes based on what I’m doing and where I’m heading. My mini palette only works with my very small water brush (slightly smaller than 1/4 pans). My “regular” travel kit is half pans. I also have a Pike palette, which is a joy to use, I just lack desk real estate.
I am lost with the grays.
From my understanding, it's to utilize the right shade to create contrast and have the right values in the right place, although she was very brief about it
This was simply a selling tactic. Telling the don’ts while not telling how. Instead it’s buy my class. Which is commonly known as clickbait because you have to go through the video to know she isn’t going to tell you how she does it. Selling a class is fine, great in fact, but say it in the beginning so those who don’t want to or can’t take a class to learn your method don’t waste their time trying to obtain knowledge but actually learn nothing.
Some people are just Karen's!! It's a no brainer, use your colors at hand, understand the color wheel, mix 2 or 3 colors creating new hues and values of them; you don't need a class for that! Wait, maybe YOU do, hence the class for those who don't get it or want a deeper understanding..classes and learning are always a plus...did you know black and yellow makes green?
thanks… I would want to try canson so No, I should go with Strathmore… Arteza is not available in the country.
Im new to painting and this was super handy
I understand it
Thank you! I have never understood the color wheel. Great Job!
The way you store your watercolor paper is important, especially when you live in an area with a harsh climate. Watercolor sizing can go bad on stored paper but you can resize it using gelatine, and HWC Multi Sizing works too. I noticed you cut your paper up if you don't like the painting on one side, but you can also use the back to paint a different painting.
how can i get color weel
Most local arts and crafts stores carry them. You can also find them online.
There are two tetrads on the wheel? a rectangle and a square?
Yes! They both give you a 4 color scheme with 2 pairs of complementary colors.
Very nice, where can i buy color wheel
Most art supply stores carry them. You can find them online as well.
Excellently explained.
I love the 3 color chart idea!!!!!!!!!!
Hi I think you did the first chart wrong, i thought one side of the color chart has more values of the color versus the other - instead of doing a lighter value you choose the ratio of paint differently like 1:3 3:1
I got the most beautiful shade of sap green using this mix! Thank you for posting. I just finished your stop making mud course too. Excellent! I’m going to watch it a lot too. At least until I’m sure I’ve got it in my head😂. It’s a ton of great information to absorb and I’m loving mixing my own colors!
I'm so glad you enjoyed Stop Making Mud!
Thank you for saying it. I don't necessarily think it's a complete waste of time- playing with paints and colors and mixing even 50/50 mixes still results in something learned. However; I do agree that there is MORE information and more to learn with your other methods. I made a similar chart to the 50/50 one except instead of tiny squares (where you can only fit a tiny square of one color), I made the chart with rectangles. And I used a small flat brush to make little lines of colors in the rectangles. And I could fit around 8-10 colors. A gradual gradient mix between two colors. With this I made a "GREENS" chart. Blues on the top and yellows on the side. These 2 color mixing charts are really valuable for seeing your possibilities with secondary colors
Sounds like a good idea Stephen, will you do a video on your process?
Very helpful. Thanks for your efforts. I do love my Arches NOT, though. But for experimenting, will haul out my Strathmore watercolor paper
Thank you for a great presentation! I had been wondering how to use the back of a color wheel.
This video could've been more helpful if u would mix the colors your way and name the video it as such. I'm sure you have valuable information but you choose to go thru the bad vibe route, all critique and no actual input other than show already made palettes and a discouraging rant.
This is the best presentation that totally explained a color wheel. Thanks
You lost me…i wish you had actually shown making your style chart
Thank you, for the very best and helpful explanation ever❤
Wow. Thank you so much.
I was hoping you'd show us which colors you used for the brighter colors, and which ones you used to make the muddier ones. Unfortunately, you didn't give us the information we need to avoid making mud. You just talked about your course link :(
Helpful, except the end part where you talk about the gray values. You didn't explain how to use that on the color wheel. Thank you.
Ashley references the grayscale at around the 9 minute mark and addresses some uses for it at 9:41 and following.
@@ArtSummits Yes, she references it. But as I said, she doesn't show HOW to use it.
I have had an assortment of color wheels, apps and now color cubes. I have been so frustrated trying to pick colors for projects and have give up many times over the years. Thanks for such an easy to understand informative video! I especially loved the explanation of grays at the end! Much appreciated 💜
I'm glad it was helpful!
Muted colours are not automatically mud.
