Larry Lujack Aircheck WCFL Chicago Fall 1972
Просмотров 381Год назад
Back in the early 70’s when it was unusual to get paid to be a smartass Larry Lujack reigned as the “Superjock” of Chicago Radio. Being 300 miles away the signal gets sketchy now and then but overall a rare listen to Lujack doing afternoons at WCFL. Last air check from the archives. Enjoy. Radio the likes of which you will never hear again.

Late 1910's Edison Laboratories Recording: Rule, Britannia! Blue Amberola cylinder played on an Edison Model 50. Discovered amongst a large collection of 4 minute Amberolas I found in the back room of an antique store.

This was a project that languished for about 25 years. The tonearm pot metal had swollen and rigor mortise had set in making it impossible to track a record. Today a "new" tonearm arrived thanks to 21st century communication via the internet. Working just like it's suppose to.

Picked this machine up on a whim and some wishful thinking. Machine turned out to be in good mechanical condition but loaded with after market accessories and non original parts. Sold all the wrong parts that came with it and bought all the right ones to make it whole again.
Larry Lujack Aircheck WCFL Christmas Address
Просмотров 9 тыс.12 лет назад
Larry Lujack aircheck WCFL Chicago beginning 4pm on Saturday December 23, 1972 (the date is incorrect on the video). At 5:00 he introduces Dave his "The Long Haired Hippie Engineer" and puts him on the air which is then followed by Mr. Lujack's Christmas Address to the Nation. Recorded 300 miles away the signal gets sketchy now and then but overall a rare listen to Lujack in free form.
Larry Lujack - WCFL, Chicago Clunk Letter of the Day "Time Capsule" 11/10/72

Larry Lujack Aircheck - WCFL Chicago Illinois. Clunk Letter of the Day "Time Capsule" recorded off the air November 10, 1972. Some posts of this do not have the full lead in and Lar's sarcastic comments afterwords. You will never hear radio like this ever again. I was very fortunate to capture this in my bedroom on my Sony Reel to Reel 300 miles away in Michigan when I was in high school.
Lujack was a supreme a*hole. But at least he made fun of Oprah on national television, so there's that! LOL
Tower of Power/Still A Young Man before Croce
So many great memories!😂
I started listening to Larry on WLS when I a kid in the late 60s. I worked really hard to imitate him, which made for hilarious schtick at school. Larry is to blame for my later career in broadcasting, where I even worked in the same market just 4 years after this recording (at a much smaller station). Did I say blame? I meant thank! And thank YOU for posting this.
BIG 6💯💯💯💯💯💯
Sittin here in 2024 and imma wondering if they put a tape player in that time capsule as well. Be hard pressed to find an analog tape player in this digital day
Glenbard West?? I went to East years later
Awesome. 😎. Please give us more Lujack.
This appears to be from two different days. Towards the end of 0-4:29 on this Larry talks about a flattering Trib article that mentions he was born in Quasqueton, IA. The only Trib article that matches that is dated June 7, 1972. Starting at 4:29 is a different day, judging by the time checks. Larry gives an ad for a showing on "Ensign Pulver" that afternoon on channel 7 at 3:30. The only match I could find for that is a listing in the Trib the very next day, June 8, 1972. That makes sense that the original poster captured some on one day at got some more the next morning.
Man, I wish you would have left the songs in! But this is still pure gold. Thank you! I listened from Marshfield, Missouri, but only at night. I couldn't pick up WLS during the day.

Flairs, monster bells, and baggies- Just Pants. Man, what a decade. Superjock is having way too much fun on the air. The Klunk Letter of the Day: He makes the Heavy 60 list on the Chicago Reader's first anniversary! Music: Honky Cat- twice! Insider's joke: ratings. Thanks for this, Pure Air.
Miss these guys more everyday.
CKLW under PD Bill Hennes. Love "brother" Bill Gable.
❤❤❤❤The 70's CKLW ❤❤❤❤
Thank you for this memory !
Pat Holiday was a great entertainer.
I heard this blooper years ago & forgot where & how I came across it...I took a shot @ this one... it's it!!! Hilarious!! The laughing is contagious 😂
I was 10 when Larry was on the air. I remember this very well! Best times.
One thing we lost with "music on demand" is great DJs. What a great era. I'm glad I was able to experience it. It's like having your favorite podcaster playing your favorite music. Ha!
You aint kidding. They will put just about anyone behind a mic these days. Sirius XM is notorious for this. There’s a couple channels I love for the content but the dj’s need to go.
😊😊@@rferguson731
Good stuff..
Wonderful audio...Thanks for uploading this gem..
Bill Gable was wearing those classic bell bottom jeans so popular in the 70's. Thanks for sharing this vintage blast from the past with great early 70's music.
Wow, Pat Holiday is on a pay phone in his photo. He was a good DJ who could really talk fast. Thanks for sharing this short classic aircheck with great music from the early 70's.
I had just turned 2 years old (Oct 24) when this aired.
This is a classic. Larry Lukack the greatest disc jockey of all time. Would listen to him when I was a teenager all the way in Peoria county.
I used to love it when he'd laugh and pound the table and you could hear his coffee mug bounce. And, good old Spacey Dave gets his on-air moment.
"...and Ed Hanrahan says he's going to put up his storm windows this weekend..." For a brief moment in time, we had SuperJock. Reliving my teenage years!
GOLD!
The best ever,I'm sure he took his shiny new dime with him.Thank for all the smiles you put on your listeners faces..
Do we need you now ! Miss you !
Uncle Lar ROCKS! Rest In Peace, Brother Larry! I am Baptist by faith, but I know that Larry Lujack is in Heaven, he was saved before he was ever on the radio. So folks, don't fear, you'll see our Uncle Lar again!
This is all kinds of awesome. The clunk letter was such a blast.
RIP, and thanks for the music. I grew up in northeastern Ohio and would wait until the sun went down so I could pull in WCFL on my radio. Larry Lujack was my favorite.
"He cared enough to send The Very Best" - Superjock's paraphrase of John 3:16. Wow. Who knew? I'm impressed.
RIP UNCLE LAR, STILL LAUGHING AT YOUR STORIES
Never before has a generation plus been a part of a single persona. You were unique to radio and a true trendsetter for the youth still attempting to perfect the simplicity you brought to Chicago Radio, Why so many years in the number 2 market... You were real! Love from all your generational family!
RIP Larry Lujack.
Little known fact: he knew Paul Revere (as in Paul Revere and the Raiders) when they were growing up in Idaho
R.I.P. Superjock.
RIP Ole Uncle Lar! You will be missed.
RIP SIR. YOU WILL be missed. You taught a young boy everything he knew.
Thanks Dott.
Mother and Child Reunion - Paul Simon
Anyone know the beginning of the song that's played in the beginning? Where it goes "don't be a moment away" sounded like an African Amercian woman.
Mother & Child Reunion by Paul Simon is indeed correct, and you didn't ask about the outro song, but in case you care and/or didn't know, it's "Rockin' Pneumonia - Boogie Woogie Flu" by Johnny Rivers. I was a mere prepubescent kid in 1972 & cutting my teeth on Rock/Pop music & listened to the radio virtually all day long.
hey what are you doing? I am retired.
