GTFOplan #78: Beheaded Asymmetrical Sail - OOP$
IN THIS VIDEO:
Join us on a crazy series of mishaps. First we beheaded our asymmetrical sail because our autopilot fails to hold a heading, then we lost our main halyard. Retrieving a giant sail as a crew of two is no easy task!
Dennis hoists Ann up the mast to retrieve the main halyard. Ann had also planned to adjust the mast-head camera but is unable to figure out how to do so. The good news is we figured out why the main dropped due to a problem with the eye of the soft shackle being too big. There's never a dull moment!

      @@GTFOplan Yes. I climbed masts many Times. We owned an X-Yacht 40 and sailed in the med, mainly in greece for some ten years. We now own a Xquisite X5 catamaran and sailed from the med to Grenada and this is the second year we have been going north along the US East coast. We are now in Procincetown on Cape Cod. Some years ago when I was equipping the X-40 some pour soul fell out of his seat in Chiavari (northern Italy) and lost his life. Everyone got concerned on how we were doing this this and we called professional climbers to give a course. These are people that climb on buildings and such. I then bought my equipment from Petzl from the professional range. My harness is very secure and you cannot in any way fall out from it. But it is not as comfortable as your seat. The big difference on our tecnique is how we manage the safety halyard. We raise a climbing rope to the mast top. We then attache a Petzl self locking device to this rope. The device is then attached to the harness. The self locking device will follow us up the mast gliding on the safety rope as well al follow us down the mast when we descend. Should the primary fail the locking device would block the fall within one meter or so. The elastic rope would then absorb the impact. So there are two advantages: elastic safety rope and only one halyard to take care of. The other issue is managing the descent. The best practice is to put a prusick security on the alyard after the whinch. Sould the persona managing the wich loose control of the layard the prusick knot would block the halyard. The final issue is what do you do if the halyard on the wich should overlap and block. It should not happen, obviously, especcialy if the climber avoids standing on something like the spreaders and relieves the tension. But should it happen? A simple loop can can be wrapped around the halyard in a prusik like knot and pulled tight to secure the halyard and then the mess cleared up. But thesee things should be there readily available. My two cents worth, :-)

    F-bombs totally unnecsssary, it really detracts from the quality of your video. As to getting smacked while on a mooring, really unfortunate. Lots of accidents in large mooring fields, too many boaters with little or no experience (may I say idiots that own boats....?) best to avoid those spots. Get the heck out of th US and take that beautiful boat (almost bought a Balance 526) to the South Pacific. We spent 5 years & 30,000 miles there on ours. 90% of the sailors there know what they're doing and very few moorings (although the french and german boats anchor a little too close sometimes! So if you're putting the hose down into the bilge and it's up above the engine you're likely not to get it to suck that far vertically up and you'll need to bring the back down lower. Hope that helps. FYI you asked what I was up to I haven't owned a 1974 196 aquasport since 1976. It's been put away for about 15 years and I have decided to bring it back to life so I've got a project on my hands for the next few months. I'm hoping to use the boat in the Exumas very much like Alex was using that 17 ft BW Montauk in the spring of 2025 down in Georgetown. We'll see. Say hello to Ann for me

    Hey guys, you don't say where the water was coming from so I assume you haven't quite figured it out. We had a similar issue on board sea life. First, can you determine if it's fresh water or saltwater. If it's salt water not sure if I can help you. But if it's fresh water check and see if your starboard water tank levels have gone down without much usage. Here's what happened on sea life. High water alarm bilge went off, we investigated, it was fresh water not salt water. Notice the water level in the starboard tank was lower than what we would have consumed. And then after talking with Jason on Tahina, he explained that the starboard hot water heater probably developed a hole in the membrane between the engine water flowing through it and the fresh water tank flowing through it. The engine coolant is a closed system and so when the breach in the membrane inside the hot water heater developed the fresh water tank has more water pressure than the pressure inside the engine and therefore pushes the coolant out of the overfill Reservoir. That Spilled Out most of the antifreeze and subsequent freshwater from the water tank. If you had coolant in your starboard engine and you don't detect coolant in the bildge this is probably not your issue and you would absolutely know if you had antifreeze coolant in your bilge unless your bilge pump was pumping it out and you didn't didn't know it. This scenario can be temporarily fixed by turning off the two in feed valve hoses going into the engine heat exchanger right at the top aft end of the motor. Then as like we had to order a new hot water heater and you know I think. To compound our problem the bilge pump not the high water bilge pump is not screwed down is and it is just an adhesive stuck to the hull. It broke free and after it broke free moving around the nipple broke off the pump itself and no longer would come any of the water out of the bilge. I was too claustrophobic to get down in there because it takes a contortionist to get to it so good luck on that if it happens to you. But that's what alerted US was that the high water bilge pump came on. I hope that helps and it wasn't too long winded. Please give me some heads up when you're headed back south through Northeast Florida I'd love to stop by and say hello. Safe travels

      Whoa! That's crazy! It was definitely saltwater, and we've since figured it out, but that's for a future episode... 😂 Our high water alarm is also just stuck on with adhesive and has come unglued twice already. For sure we will let you know when we pass through Florida again!

    Dyneema will stretch a little when first installed so its important to tighten the lashings periodically until they stop moving. We used bigger diameter line on ours so it only took one adjustment to stay snug. We still check it before every passage. Glad you got it sorted.

  • @ballievogel5385
    @ballievogel5385 Месяц назад

    Hey guys about the twist in the torsion line this will only happen if you keep the line under load while the sail is you. Its best practice to easy out about 4-6ft while the sail is flying and when you want to furl get tention again and then only furl it away. This giving the torsion line time to relax an untwist

    • @GTFOplan
      @GTFOplan Месяц назад

      Thanks Peter! No, because I assumed all of our bilges were working properly. Our big mistake was having crap on the nav table and accidentally turning off our bilge pump. So in the heat of the moment, thinking our bilge pump had failed, I resorted to the portable pump. Plus, being woken up and still foggy didn’t help. Rookie mistake for sure, and our nav table is much more pristine now.
