A mix of videos giving practical tips for gardeners and videos about the meaning and messages of plants and flowers.
I have been running a plant nursery in Suffolk with my husband for 17 years. Over the years I have been fortunate enough to develop a closer understanding and knowledge of the plants I have worked with. Besides practical information, I wish to share the beauty, history, folklore and properties of flowers and plants.
Just by looking at flowers, berries or foliage we can be filled with emotion. We can feel a sense of peace, joy, confidence, love, regret, optimism or renewal. Plants speak to the mind, body and spirit. This has long been acknowledged and over the years flowers have been associated with meanings and messages.

What about perlite for retaining water
Do you have any tips on how to control slugs ?
Slugs have been a big problem this year in the UK because we have had a lot of rain and they love the damp. Hopefully they haven't managed to reach your hanging basket! I like environmentally friendly controls such as wool pellets or copper around your plants.
My basket is really thriving after following your video. Very pretty.
I am so glad to hear that. It's easy when you know how!
Truly enjoyed this video. I luckily had purchased most of the suggestions, but loving the pizza method
Thank you very much. I love pizza as well as flowers!
Thank you
Thanks for sharing. How do I start if I have a plastic basket?
You just need to do the same. In some ways plastic baskets in summer are better because the water does not evaporate through the sides. However if you are in the UK you will be likely to be using peat free compost. I have made another video about how to use peat free. There is a risk in a container with no holes at the bottom that the water sits and creates a 'soggy bottom'! Follow my tips on how to check for that. If the base stays wet the roots will rot and the plants won't thrive. I hope this helps.
Have you ever cut holes (small) and have plants trail out of the bottom. I would sew up the hole loosely to prevent soul seepage. I saw that on another video
Yes I do that if it is for a pub or hotel where their baskets are often up high. Customers have a different view of the bottom of the basket so it means they can appreciate the flowers more. If you are going to do that though you need to make sure that the basket is big enough. I would recommend at least a 16" basket, otherwise there is not enough compost to sustain the flowers on top and the underplanting. I hope that helps.
I have watched many videos and I think yours is by far the best. Super helpful and I am off now to the garden centre with my list. I have around 10 baskets to plant. I will definitely be back to let you know how it went. Thx again.
I look forward to that. Thank you.
So many excellent suggestions for plants . Really enjoyed your video. The background music was lovely. Thank you for all the names…..and posting them. Excellent idea. Off to the garden shop with my list. Thank you from Vancouver Canada.👍🏻🥰💐🇨🇦
It was a pure pleasure watching your video from Quebec, Canada!!
Thank you. I am glad you enjoyed it. I imagine the temperatures might be different for you so I wonder if you use different plants?
Thank you, just what I needed.
I am so glad. Thank you for letting me know. 🙂
Simple and easy to follow, thank you❤
That is a really beautiful basket. I am just learning, but how can flowers that crowded with so little soil grow? It seems like they would need some room for the roots to go somewhere.
Good question. There is a bit of room for them to grow but they will only be growing for a few months over summer. Once they have grown into the space these 'summer bedding plants' will put all their energy into flowering prolifically. Then once there is a frost they will die (so there is no need for more space to grow).
I just got a nordman fir today to plant in my garden. Have planted a Picea Glauca Pungens but it's very spiky. Thanks for the video, the Nordman is so elegant endeed!❤ Especially thanks for the"trimming the botom" I love them slimmer. 🤩 Happy New Year! 🌲🎁🎁❤
Thank you for your comment Nadine. It is good to know that it is helpful. I wish you every happiness with your Nordman fir. I find I get very attached to our trees. 🙂
Dandelion is one of the Safest Medicinal plant, no worry if no overdose. Its properties are indeed Beneficial, since "pissenlit" or "piss-a-bed" Cleanse the Root of our body system : not only the Kidneys but the Liver. Which is rare to do both. Liver & Kidneys are one of the 5 emonctories that are Vitally detoxifying, purging and flushing out everything that enters our bodies yet shouldn't stay in for our balanced health. Dandelion alongside Burdock, Milk's thistle, Nettle among are everything but "bad weed"....easily growing everywhere, very flexible in being invasive is indeed a gift : not only for us but also the Soil, so All Life then. Its nutritional richness provide such Vital resources : " best weed" ! At least 2 cures per year to Cleanse & Restore both Kidneys & Liver should be done. Of course be very careful as plants can kill as much as heal....but Dandelion is very Safe : roots, flowers and leaves. Well done Nature ! Time to listen to our bodies...Ground, vitally ground for energies from head to toes to calmly flow while far more. And make a wishful wish....
What is the name of the first foliage plant?
A great video cheers
Glad you enjoyed it
really wonderful Video Ruth , really enjoyed that , can they both flower pink?
Thank you so much for taking time to comment. Only the hawthorn has pink tinted flowers. The blackthorn flowers are always white. Thank you for watching. These two flowers have special significance to me because they seemed to help me when I had breast cancer last year. I have written a blog all about it and about flower essences. The link is here just in case you might want to read it. ruthgoudy.com/my-experience-with-flower-essences/
Thank you for this. Do you know if the Red and White nettles are also used in teas?
I have tried the red nettle but not the white. It tasted a little bitter to me. Do you put it with something else to sweeten it? Thank you.
Great video and really great tips and advice thanks. 👍
Glad it was helpful! It is one of the most commonly asked questions at the nursery. We all need a splash of colour at the front door but we are often short on time.
Thanks that was so useful 👍
Glad it helped
Stunning! Thank you for the inspiration. I just started to grow ornamentals on my balcony and I love the white basket. I will try to recreate something like that :) Kind Regards :)
Sounds great! I have kept mine but our garden is quite sunny so sometimes it dries out a bit. I shall have to be more diligent!
Beautiful, Thank you for sharing :)
My pleasure 😊 I love the spring.
I love your raised bed. Do you have a picture of the space? I would love to see it.
Thank you so much. Actually I created this for one of my best friend's mums. I will have to ask her.
Thank you!
Glad it was helpful. 🙂
❤❤❤
Glad you liked it.
It would be better to listen to you without the background music.
Thank you for letting me know.
Lovely. I am going to purchase larger hanging baskets this year. The smaller ones do not have enough soil in them to keep them going. Lovely arrangement and flowers.
Totally, especially with peat free. It will take more watering and feeding these days. But it is good to look after the planet.
Thanks Ruth! Met you this year ar Saskias course, great video!!
Thank you Kim. I remember you well. I hope you are doing OK and finished your course? I am in the throes of wreath making at the moment so the hands are suffering from prickly holly!
Do you know the name of the background music? Very relaxing.
Thank you. I will try and find out for you.
@@theflowerwriter Thanks! Great video too :) !
Thank you for this video! I loved how you provided plant lists for your beautiful selection and the music was nice too. I'm now ready to head to my neighborhood garden center.
Thank you for your kind comment. I am glad you found the plant lists helpful.
❤️
I love the beautiful flowers you chose for this basket!
Thank you. I love the summer bedding. They are so bright and beautiful.
Thank you for really helpful advice.... Am ready to go now..
Great. I am sure yours will look lovely. :-)
Excellent explanation !!! Thank you !!
Glad it was helpful!
Absolutely really nice one
Thank you!
Hello Ruth, where can I find that kind of hanging baskets ? thanks
Hi there! I think that most garden centres here in the UK stock this type of basket. To be honest, just plant in a basket that you like. It is your chance to choose what you like the look of. The most important thing is not to use one that is too small.
Awesome,, however Begonias do not like the sun,, as all the other varieties do. We have no luck with Begoniiias in the sun,, Ever. Thanks for the Great Video. here in 2021
Yes, this is for a mixed basket. In the UK I have always found that they are OK in moderation. If you are planting in hot, bright sunny conditions I would suggest geraniums. They are the most forgiving. I have made a video all about a shade hanging basket and talk about using non-stop and illumination begonias there. Thank you very much for your comments. :-)
What a delicious pizza! ❤️
I like the edible ones too!
Watching..philippines☘️🌿🌱💚
How lovely to be reaching out to people so far away from me.
I am new to gardening. So this was a perfect introduction. Thank you
Hi, if I did use a 12 inch hanging basket for a summer display do I use 3 trailing plants round the basket, upright in the middle and 3 uprights as the fillers? Loved watching this video, some really good advice, thank you x
Thank you. I really enjoy doing baskets and I hope you do too.
@@tinarichardson5107 yes that is exactly what I would do. However as the season goes on and if you are planting late May early June you might find that the plants in the garden centre have grown bigger so you might not need so many. Just go with the flow! They flowers always look gorgeous.
Thank you Ruth for your reply, your video is amazing x
Could you please spell the little yellow trailing plant so I can look for it at our nearby nursery ...the basket is lovely☺️
Yes the one at 3.04 that cc calls “Alyssa macchia”
Lysimachia :-)
