i started playing osrs last year, when i did sote i loved seeing the unique chareter models. helps me understand that they are key and pivotal to the story, like how the Mahjarrat look now, they deservethe new and updated look. the old lava dragon model to me didn't look great simply due to the different resolutions of each surface of the fire cape texture. newer one cleans up design, dulls it down and is a "safe" design choice. new torva doesnt look bad imo, fine with the change so that reg and blood torva dont look like two different sets. i think the shift from stormtroopper into Mandalorian helmet was a good one.

Maybe they should add a cosmetic mask plate you can find in a crate somewhere behind the frozen door you could wear on it's own or attach to your torva helm to make it look like the old one, masks are cool.

Good on you for following up with a video! I gotta say, I disagree with your main points here. I do not think that these types of aesthetic decisions need to be polled every single time they want or need to change a single thing. People's preferences for art styles are WAY too varied, and WAY too subjective for polls that dictate direct development effort. I would absolutely understand a survey or other form of opinion data used to inform the Art team of design decisions that players generally don't like. Even recently with the Fang model change, and the subsequent inventory icon debacle, that resulted in a large enough backlash that they made adjustments to undergo a partial revert. If old Torva was REALLY that much better than the new model, in the eyes of even a simple majority of players, wouldn't we see way more feedback asking for the revert? Additionally, If the Jmod team says that the old Torva model presented technical challenges, including their backport pipeline, I am going to believe them. I am not a model designer (obviously lol), but I do know that people tend to make assumptions about what is and isn't difficult to do when looking at other people's jobs. Your dismissal of their reasonings without anything to back it up doesn't really do anything to convince me that the Art team is just hiding behind an excuse. Overall, your video feels like its framing the discussion as "The OSRS Art Team vs The Loyal Playerbase", and it feels like you are intentionally casting the Art team as some sort of morally dubious entity that HATES player feedback and refuses to respect the "True Art Style" of OSRS. When in my eyes, it looks more like a vocal minority unhappy with 2-3 visual updates to "older" content. I personally feel like the Art team has been knocking it out of the park with many of the recent releases, so I am willing to give them more of the benefit of the doubt. Hey, that's just my opinion though, I may be on the wrong side of history on this one. Regardless, I am always down to hear other player's perspectives, even if I fundamentally disagree with them.

Mod Gee clearly had a passion for fantasy but not for osrs. Her art not being critiqued internally to the same standard as other artists' is part of a wider problem with misogyny in osrs both at Jagex & throughout the community leading to her ideas not being taken seriously & part of the reluctance to roll back changes she'd made to models which really didn't fit the style was a reaction to the misogyny expressed by the community as a reaction to the changes she made, which diluted the signalling of why players were upset & is a big part of why we're stuck with them today.

I’ve never had the pleasure of wearing torva in my life but I’ve always wanted to, even before they added it to osrs I was hoping someday they would add it and maybe if I grind hard enough it can be mine someday, and now I don’t know how much I care for it anymore, the new design kinda ruined it for me. Maybe they could revert it and make a Cheap ornament kit to make it like the new design

Bro i really like the idea of sailing and i liked everything for varlamore part 2. Ill be doing the quests and herblore minigsme too. The only thing i didnt like in the summit was zanaris but i voted yes on everything. Also I'm maxed and fight scurrius, perilous moons etc. I love all the rewards and unique. The new boss will drop dragon bane weapon which is cool.

There is a very extreme pattern of content being produced / changed, then adjusted once based on feedback, then never looked at again. Could name a load of content in the last few years that has gone through this cycle (mainly forestry), where it gets a bad change then just left to rot forever (until a few years time if they ever get around to fixing the stuff they made worse). Same thing applies for the art stuff, Jmod makes changes that are in the game, leaves the company, and these changes are never revisited. Way too much focus on "not wasting dev time" whilst mass producing sub par updates, and leaving content usually in a pretty bad spot when they change things.

i think its more of us not caring when they add brand new content if the graphics are good, but changing the graphics of old content is what we hate.

As someone who very much enjoys many of the modern graphical evolutions of OSRS, which, to me, keep the charm of the low-fidelity style while giving it a bit more personality, I think it's important to distinguish what version of Runescape we're playing. We didn't get a 2002-scape, or a 2004-scape, we got a 2007scape, with all the graphical evolutions present of the time. We can look toward the new NPC models seen in God Wars Dungeon 1, for example -- General Zilyana is, to me, a lot more similar to what we saw with the elf changes than what the elves looked like before, back when they first released in 2004/2005. Same applies to Kr'il Tutsaroth, who has more complex geometry and shading than just about any NPC prior. I also really love the new environments in Oldschool as well, Varlamore is a great example of anexceptional achievement within the simplistic artstyle of the game, that's both evocative of something new while still staying faithful to what made Oldschool such a charming game, visually. The final thing I'll add to this video, which I did enjoy regardless of agreements or disagreements and I would love to see more, is that I think the success of Runescape as a game is in its ability to evolve and change, not to just stay the same. The key, however, is in positive evolutions. Oldschool Runescape today is virtually nothing like what it was on launch, from the way it plays to the way it's designed, and I think that's why it is seeing such an immense amount of growth as an MMO. OSRS was on the verge of dying in 2014, now it's not only thriving, it, unlike just about any other MMO, is growing. I'm sympathetic to wanting what is tried and true to remain as it is, and i am not here advocating for reworking the OG overworld to be more akin to what we see in Zeah or Varlamore, but I will maybe give the hot take that the areas we see in Desert Treasure 2, the boss designs especially, are truly some of the best animation work and graphical work in the entire game. I much rather have them continue to evolve this style -- not change it, or transform it, or add more polygons or whatever, but hone in on the elements that make it so beloved. I don't want to see an "HD mode" wherein realistic textures are haphazardly applied to preexisting models, nor do I want the game to take on the graphical qualities of, say, RS3. But there is a value in pushing an existing style forward and making it even better, which I think Jagex has, by and large, done successfully.

as someone whose deeply loved rs art style from the past the new look is so off putting, this is ancient armor from the far past its meant to stick out heavily like third age armor. the newer change makes it entirely dull and less interesting.

In the Ancient Prison of the God Wars Dungeon the Spiritual Warriors still have the old Torva helmet look on the character models. I do wish the option existed for those who preferred the original model of the Torva helmet. How do you think the Mods could be prompted to implement this, Sani?

I think its strange that art team members can make permanent changes and disappear from the game completely. I don't mind new Torva but graphics updates should be polled just like everything else, forced ideas from temporary J Mods sets a horrible precedent. Subbed tho I like the points you made.

Interesting video, but I respectfully disagree with some of your point that you make. Whilst I'd agree that the elves were overdesigned and that they almost look like they belong to a different game, certain redesigns, like the updated lava dragon model, for example, looks fine to me. I don't agree that it wasn't updated without good reason. You say new players would why this dragon looks different to others, but I think that's explainable as they are unique in a couple of different ways; they're only found in the wilderness and they are neither a chromatic or metallic dragon. I think to go on to say, new players would look at lava dragons, wonder why they look different and get confused/pulled out of immersion is not very convincing and seems to be conjecture on your part to further your own argument. The final iteration with the old lava textures is better though. It's confusing to me that you'd endorse the original Torva designs as many would liken them to Mod Gee's elves which for some are overdesigned to then reject the eventual redesign/simplification of Torva which we have now. Again, I think applying this rationale that 'Mods never liked Torva' rhetoric appears to be pure conjecture, especially when you consider that there was a bit of controversy the 2011 Torva being straight ported over. To me, the they were responding to the specific aesthetic criticism which was being discussed, not trying to make Torva their own. Other sets such as Bandos and Elite void point to the fact that Jagex don't mind reusing models which had been created years prior. In any case, it did seem to be a tough one for Jagex to manage given that there were very disparate proposals for what Torva should be in OSRS. ..All that said, I do agree with you, I much prefer OG Torva! And it would appear that I'm just debating for debating sake whilst I chop my redwoods.

idk how people like old torva its too bulky. The new torva has a way better helm with the purple or red eyes looks way better imo

I thought old Torva was hideous and I wasnt going to upgrade to BIS melee until they added something to replace it or changed how it looked. Ive still not upgraded to BIS melee because theres so many other things to buy instead but I'm not completely opposed to it now.

Almost every update tells me Jagex wants a new audience to supplant the existing one. The inclusivity stuff like body types, and the big fancy graphics overhaul in the future.

- Community servers are great for PvP and PvP events for newcomers if you can spawn items and show up at a location without the risk of losing your progress in the main game - Plugin API is so you don't have to scrape the client for data and gives it a lot more native feel, I imagine RuneLite would be discontinued altogether if this becomes the approach for all plugins - Old Torva looks hideous, I've not seen anyone ask for it to return other than the people circlejerking under Jagex's tweets for attention Usually your vids are pretty insightful but this was just you complaining for the sake of complaining
