Young Men weekend trip to Death Valley to play in the sand dunes.
Wood Canyon Young Men High Adventure 2020
Просмотров 914 года назад
This year we travel a road less traveled by in order to climb Mount Whitney via Miter Basin and the Dreaded Sand Hill. A hail storm with dangerously close lightning came upon us at 13,500 and forced us to abandon our summit bid. We descended down the Whitney Portal trail and all left with memories that will live with us forever.
Attempt to fly Over Mount Whitney without an engine

This is a bit of a long video to show what it is like to search for warm rising air to gain enough altitude to fly over Mt. Whitney, the tallest mountain in the contiguous United States. The sounds that you hear from the plane is caused by the variometer. It is an instrument that indicates if the airplane is rising or falling. The other pulsing sound is the oxygen system that I use above 10,000...

Просмотров 1346 лет назад
LDS Wood Canyon Ward Young Men's 2018 High Adventure. We took 24 Young Men and leaders to Mt. Whitney in California after a record year in snowfall. We used snowshoes, crampons, and ice axes to climb the mountain. At 14,505 feet, Mt. Whitney is the tallest peak in the contiguous United States. We were very fortunate to summit 22 of 24 climbers. The conditions were generally favorable but we did...
Daddy Daughter Mt Whitney 2017
Просмотров 13 тыс.7 лет назад
On May 8, 2017, Myself Christian Mackin and my daughter Lauren Mackin set out to climb the highest mountain in the lower 48 states during a year with a 250% snow pack. We encountered very good weather during our climb. The only challenge was the warm conditions in the afternoon that softened the snow and required us to post hole in waist deep snow.

Everest Base Camp - Villages

The Everest Base Camp trail is populated by Sherpa villages from the trail head at Lukla all the way to Gorakshep at 17,000 feet. Families grow most of their food and raise their families here. There are several monasteries along the trail where monks dedicate their lives to their faith.

Lukla is the gateway to Everest. It is a small village located in the Himalayas in Nepal. The only thing smaller than the village is the runway, which has the reputation as the most dangerous runway in the world.

On the trail to Everest Base Camp their is a small village named Ghat. I lived there together with my 17 year old daughter Kirsten while we taught English at the school as well as the monastery nearby. We lived with Jangbu and Angdali. A wonderful monk family. Jangbu is a great leader in his village and actively supports the school and the community.

I fell off the summit and plummeted 3000ft below into a granite cliff. I thought I made it through okay until I found out that Heaven apparently has free internet access for the recently deceased. (sigh).

We got a lot of rain this year here in SoCal, which means massive amounts of snow in the Sierras, if you are doing this in March of 2019 it sounds like you better have snow shoes.

Patience pays off! Congratulations. Looks like you're running xcsoar on your main display - can you tell me what kind of panel it is? Maybe an Ultimate from Craggy Aero? Whatever it is looks very nice and readable.

I hiked it with my dad (I'm his daugher) in 1981 and again in 1990. And we're from OC as well. Didn't do it in May...we waited until August for both trips (not much snow of course.)

Gosh, what a great tutorial on how to maximize a day. Can't believe I hadn't run across this earlier. Thanks so much for the effort 33, I took some lessons on how to get from Cal City (I guess Tehachapi now) to Whitney, hopefully I can put it to use someday. Cheers.

Have seen many RUclips uploads of this trip but by far your video tops them all. I know it is not a smart trip to do this alone but I can't find anyone to do this trip with in my circle of friends. This video was very detail oriented and inspiring. I wish my daughters can join me on this trip (planning for 2018) as your daughter did... What a great way to spend quality, quality time with your daughter. thank you very much for your video. I too wondered what camera setup you were using for this video and the pole that held up your camera for this video. I'd appreciated if you can reveal that part of the gear with us.

Great video, very interesting, but unless one really loves snow and cold, I can't imagine why anyone wants to do such a strenuous hike in winter conditions except for the extra challenge. I grew up in snow country and had my fill. I love green and warm sun, so the best time for me to hike Whitney is late summer/Sept. but even then I have been caught in a sudden blizzard. I like to see it all in one day up and back - a hot shower, steak dinner, and jacuzzi afterward.

Yes I am using the Ultimate and I am running XCSoar. The ultimate is fantastic. It is 110% visible at all times in the sun. XCSoar runs perfectly on it. I have used WinPilot and SeeYou. I have been using XCSoar this year and find it outstanding.

What LCD panel are you running? It looks like an Ultimate LE but appears to be running XCSoar, which I don't think is supported. Screen visibility seems superb.
