“My life is like a river….low points and high points…and middle points….all is my life!”
Lyrics:

Jazz saxophone technique building

Beyond your major/minor scales and thirds, 3 great technique builders are: 1. Transcribe/memorize the complete solo of your favorite jazz saxophonist. 2. Memorize Cherokee or other Bebop tune in all keys, with metronome. 3. Utilize current great jazz exercises that speak to you….you can even write your own. Practice with metronome in all keys. The one I used today was: “Exercise 10 Enclosure Ex...

Jazz and the melodic minor scale. This sound is pretty basic to a more modern jazz sound, and here I just talk about some famous applications. NOTE: You need to shed this in all possible keys. It will take time, but it’s really important.

The goal here is to help develop your ear with this simple exercise. Hopefully to unlock those great jazz phrases already in your brain and get them in your solos. The tune: “Have You Met Miss Jones”.

I love this, in jazz we use the ascending melodic minor, in classical we use regular ascending and descending melodic scale.

    • @jimbutler2784
      @jimbutler2784 Месяц назад

You are exactly right! The jazz use of melodic minor unlocks all sorts of modern sound ideas. Not just jazz…also in orchestral works by 20th century composers such as Heitor Villa-Lobos, and others. The MM scale is big.

Hello Jim, from PA here. Great job, Informative and simple to understand. Showing where to play the notes is helpful also. I need lots of jazz theory made easy as I play mostly by ear and need it simple to understand. Jazz is difficult. I listen to alot of it pretty regularly. Started sax about 3 yrs ago. Been practicing off & on in-between hectic wrk schedules and haven't been getting the time in as much as would like tho. I am working on perfecting my embouchure but I am dealing w cheap equipment and very difficult to play and control and sounds like heap of junk but I am glad to at least own one. I love playing and just improving. I like all types of Jazz but comfortable playing and jumping right in on some acid jazz funk melodies. Glad to kno ya. Look forward to checking out some of your other videos.🎵🎷
