If you don’t live in a “well known” city or a city not known for the entertainment agencies, do you have to move to these cities that do. I’m aware becoming an actor or dancer you’ll most likely have to move to la or nyc, but for those just starting out, do you have to pack everything up and head to these places in hopes of getting jobs?
This is a tricky question that I get asked ALL THE TIME, so thank you for this question Marie. It's really up to the individual. If you live close enough to a city where SOME things are happening there (like auditions and/or gigs) then yes try to pursue as much as you can through casting websites, open auditions, etc in your area to help get started and build your resume and experience. But if you are training and reaching your limit to grow and want to make it a more "full-time" profession, then I think most dancers at this point will need to relocate to a city with more opportunities. But again it depends on what you want to pursue? Commercial Dancing (TV, Film, Commercials, Tours).... then LA, Atlanta, NYC, Nashville, and a few others have the majority of this work. If you want to be a dance teacher at a studio then any city has a big need for dance teachers. Cruise Ships and Overseas shows? A lot of cruise ships auditions throughout the US and mainly in Florida. Musical Theatre, Live Shows? (singing, dancing, and acting) then NYC is your calling. Country Music music videos and award shows then NASHVILLE. Now Atlanta is filming a ton od stuff lately...tv shows, movies, music videos etc. and they have a huge hip-hop scene. Don't forget VEGAS if you are a well-rounded dancer wanting lots of different live show experiences and industrials. Hope this helps you :)
hi Shy! im looking for any advice on my situation. im 19 yrs old (female) and plan on moving out to NYC this fall. I'm pretty sure i want to get my school out the way so that means getting my bachelor's degree in political science (unrelated to dance i know lol but its important to me) so that'd be another 2 yrs of school. besides school, i want to continue dancing!!!! my ultimate goal is to be a commercial dancer; I especially want to dance aside major artists at concerts and tours. however, until i get my degree it'd have to be training on the side. therefore, i would love to train in NYC for the time being. I'm well-rounded as I was studio trained since 3 years old but I mostly want to center my training in hip-hop, jazz funk, heels, and contemporary and simply improve my dancing skills. I'm also trying to make connections first because one day when I'm done with school i'd like to actually move out to LA (if that's where the opportunities are) and fulfill my goals. NYC will be temporary I believe but I definitely want to take advantage of the city and build my foundation so once im ready to get out there im prepared. 1st: do you know any studios in NYC that offer the particular training im looking for, or do you know anyone I could connect with that could help me find the right studio to train at? 2nd: do you have any piece of advice for making connections? when is most appropriate; for example, after class do you come up to instructors/dancers and tell them your name and a little about you? thanks for reading and I appreciate any comments and advice you have to offer! <3
WOW what a great plan and great questions. Sorry I'm so late to respond. ANYONE WHO WANTS IMMEDIATE ADVICE CAN ALWAYS EMAIL ME ANYTIME shyproductions@hotmail.com.... 1. There are sooooo many great studios in NYC as it is one of the biggest entertainment capitals in the world. Dance is amazing there. I'm sure you've already found some great studios. Broadway Dance Center & Steps on broadway are the main ones and im sure you can google even more. Lots of the schools have special summer programs too and open master classes. 2. When you start taking classes, introduce yourself to everyone. Be friendly, genuine, ask questions. Always thank the teacher after each class. If they seem receptive to you try to continue a conversation, if they are too busy or non-receptive then just move on and continue to always be kind. You'll get to know the people who take classes often, the teachers, the staff at the studios etc. Try to attend local dance events like showcases, university shows, musicals etc. Introduce yourself at auditions as well. Performers take for granted sometimes the people behind the scenes like people working the front desk at studios, or the person who is helping everyone get checked in for the audition etc. All the people you meet in your industry you will be working alongside and auditioning alongside for years to come even if you move cities. Be kind to everyone and know that you have a path and your unique connections will help you down that path. There are people even to this day that say "Chi, i remember you were always so nice and fun to be around I wanted to hire or work with you". Kindness lasts a long time and so does a good reputation. Cant wait to hear any updates on your NYC move and how its going. Please share b/c it helps other dancers see what its like to move to a big city! Thanks
what should i wear ideally as i am lean, 5'7, long legs, brown long hair, light olive toned skin ?? thanks Shy!
thank you ... my audition is on 22march22
How did it go?!
So excited!!

This was a good video but I have a question, I don’t live in an area or around an areas that have talent agencies (either for dance, music, or anything else) near me. I’m only 16 so I cant just go out and move to one of those areas by myself so that’s not an option, how do I find an agency or do you think an agency will accept me even though I don’t think in their casting area?
Hey Ayonna, a lot of dancers ask me this. This is a hard one. Most agencies don’t want to rep dancers who don’t live in their city b/c they know they won’t be able to attend same day or next day auditions, work long term etc. in that city. It’s difficult for each entity in this situation. I would suggest looking online for auditions in your area and wherever you are willing travel. It will be more challenging but not impossible. Talk to people in your dance community. That always helps when you can get advice from dancers, instructors, choreographers in your area on the best way to go about finding work. Making connections will help a lot. Hope this helps. Each city is so different when it comes to their industry and work potential.
@@ShyDanceProductions thank you!
Hi! Thank you so much for this helpful video. Do you have any advice for someone with no professional experience while building a resume? Would you just recommend just trying to gain experience without an agent first?
Hi Danielle, yes any small or unpaid experience would be beneficial. So doing free gigs, gigs for trade, showcases etc are great ways to start out and good things to put on resumes when beginning. Put your training on there as well. Build as you go. Don’t worry about having a large resume. Main thing is having great headshots, being skilled, nailing the audition, being professional etc. hope this helps!
Good to see and listen to 👌 nice one kids 👏👏👏👏
Thank you Shy! New subscriber here. This video had a lot of great information.

@@ShyDanceProductionshey shy , how can I reach you or contact you????
Hi! What would you recommend for Choreography Agents! I am interested in New York! Thank you in advanced
Hi Madison, NYC isn’t my area of expertise but some of the same LA agencies are in NYC too. Bloc, MSA, Clear and DDO. They all rep the biggest names in choreography. Try to get together a good reel of all your best Choreo and I’d advise to keep it under 1min to submit to them. Good luck in your pursuit. Hope this helps 😊
Nice video
Thank you
Hey ! As there in no agency and agent in india, I need some specific help. Can you help me ?
I’ll try, What is your question?
@@ShyDanceProductions how can I get an agent or any agency who can help me get work in US ?
@@thisshouldbekeval this is very challenging. You usually have to be located in the same city/state as your agency. The whole point is so they can call you with auditions/castings that you need to attend that day or next few days. So it’s the most beneficial to be in the same city/state as your agency. They also usual hire locals. It’s very difficult for dancers out of the country to get work because the production would have to get you a work visa, flights, hotel, per diem and they won’t do that when they can hire local dancers. There are a lot of dancers who have moved to the states with work visas and get work while they are here. But most will not hire out-of-country Dancers unfortunately. Are you considering relocating?
@@ShyDanceProductions yes I want to move there for work but that's the problem I'm not getting right guidance to achieve that.
@@thisshouldbekeval I would try to research getting a US work or travel visa. Then look at your options from there. I’m not very educated in the Visa’s department but I know you can research it online. Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful.
Hello Shy! Thank you for this video <3 It's really helpful :D I hope you could also make a video about resumes. :) What do they look for? How long does it have to be? What kinds of achievements catch the attention of agents? Do they have to be gigs or may I include competitions I joined?
Good one! I do need to do a quick vid on this topic. Resume are not as important as you may think. Yes you want to look professional and have it done correctly but most of the time it’s reputation, talent THEN experience. INCLUDE performances, role, choreographer/director. Also include training and education. Do not include dance competition credits. Hope this helps, I’ll add this topic to my list of video content 😉 thanks!!

hi shy! thank you so much for this video. it has helped make this process make a lot more sense. i was wondering if you know any dance agencies in dallas, tx? when i tried to google some, none came up and were mostly for modeling. also, becoming a professional dancer is something i really want to do for a career, so would you advise to start posting on youtube or instagram? and do you have any advise for a self taught dancer? thanks again! :)
You’re welcome!!! I’m so glad. Hmm I don’t know any in Dallas. Let me inquire to some friends. Yes post videos of all your styles, that is an excellent source for people to see and hear about you, casting people to see your talent etc. My biggest advice for a self taught dancer is to get as much training from professionals as possible. Most dancers who are self taught lack a lot of the fundamentals of dance and so can hinder them from being hired b/c professionals can usually tell the difference. Pay close attention to details and make your execution look identical to all your teachers. Holler at me if you need any more help Taylor :-) ShyProductions@hotmail.com

Thanks for the info! If I have braces do you think I could still book and agent and jobs?
Hi Alyssa! That’s a good question. Sometimes it can but usually only for older things since braces are typically viewed as a youthful look. So sometimes you can be cast on orthodontics commercials but for most other things that are more mature/adult they usually don’t cast people with braces unless the role or story calls for it.
@@ShyDanceProductions thank you so much!! Your channel is really helpful!
Hi I was wondering about getting an agent outside of my city, the closest well known agency is 5 hours away from where I live. I’m not in a position to move down there but I want to be able to dance professionally, what should I do?
Maya, I think 5 hrs is doable. You would be auditioning in that city so you’d have to be willing to commute for auditions/castings from time to time. Make sure to have strong headshots and dance shots so when they submit you online for stuff youll have a better chance at getting work without having to attend an audition. Do you have a good dance reel?
@@ShyDanceProductions Thank you that was helpful! I’m putting together my reel now, and I’ve included different styles of dance and tricks I’m able to do.
@@mayaradike1813 you’re welcome! Great!!!
how do you go about getting an agent if you live in Louisiana but plan on moving to LA soon?
KeKe, you could so ahead and send some emails to them, follow their submission instructions on their websites. Make sure you get up to date instructions as the arts industry is pretty shit down right now. If you need help finding agents in LA either google "LA Dance agencies" or you can email me for more info on my recommendations for Top Dance Agencies in LA. ShyProductions@hotmail.com
Do you have to move to L.A because I live in Atlanta and I want a dance agency in L.A
It is most beneficial for a dancer who lives in LA to have an LA agency, so which ever city a dancer lives in they should have an agent in that city. The main reason being that agencies want dancers in town to send out on auditions and be available for all castings, rehearsals and gigs, sometimes last minute. However if you can travel to LA as often as they need you to then you can always have multiple agents. You might think about signing with an agent who has an agency in both ATL and LA, there are a couple and that would help give you the inside scoop to each cities dance scene.
No you dont have to live in LA to have a dance agent in LA, BUT, they most likely cant book you on gigs that you cannot attend the auditions for in LA. They really need you in that city for you to book jobs in that city. There are always exceptions to this though. If you have an agency in ATL that also have an LA location then they would most likely sign you there as well. Or like me, i had worked in LA for so long that even though i live in Nashville now i am still signed with my agency in LA "Go 2 Talent" Agency in LA but am also represented by "FRESH Talent Group" in Nashville. Hope this helps, email me if you have anymore questions. THANKs Maameyaa
Your personality is awesome, I would love to meet you in person and discuss this in more depth. Do you have an Instagram or something?
Thanks Stephanie! Yes for sure, would love to help. @hollywooddanceintensive or @chilopes 👍🏼
i've got a question: i've moved around a lot and never was around any dance studios growing up but i've been self taught since i was seven and just recently got on my schools dance team and have been using training through that and anything online that i could find, would it have a negative impact on my audition, even if i excel in multiple styles?
karah marion Hi! That’s a great question. Honestly it depends on how good you are (how good you are with details, dynamics, energy, performance & execution). A lot of times experts know when a dancer isn’t trained in a studio-We can tell- BUT some dancers, like yourself, who ARE self taught, train online or get different training than the norm if they train hard we can’t tell!!!! It depends on your work ethic. If you’re a hard working individual who is highly motivated to train everyday from some sort of professional/program then yes you’ll be fine. For anyone-no matter studio trained or self trained- if you aren’t actively pursuing the best training you have access to and keeping up on your training then it could definitely effect your auditions. Here’s an example...I had a girl who went on my Hollywood Dance Intensive who had minimal training(high school training) and the training she did have wasn’t very good BUT when she went with me to LA and learned & saw how great everyone is there, she decided to go to a commercial entrainment college in LA and got to train with famous working choreographers. She trained with them weekly and with several different ones. So that in addition to her taking open classes at the LA pro studios consistantly (despite “clicks”, fund$, sometimes being discouraged etc) After 2 years of training that much and with the experts she is hitting it hard working in several music videos, projects and also assists some of the Beyoncé dancers who have mentor ship programs. Does that make since? Was this helpful? I encourage you keep going no matter what you face! There are soooo many online platforms now for dance training like Steezy, CLI studios, lots of RUclips channels with virtual classes. There are lots of free options too (youtube obviously and Google “free virtual dance classes”). Go to any open dance classes in your area with great teachers. Sometimes you can pop in to an open class for like $10-15 depending on who and where. I hope this helps you!!!!!! Hit me up anytime if you need anymore advice 😊
Thank you for sharing this info! I’ll be starting my training in ballroom dance soon and I want to be prepared for the future. Any tips on getting experience for beginners that could make us more appealing to dance agencies?
RecklessInspirer Hi! Your welcome :-) Are you a trained dancer just starting ballroom? So beginner at ballroom? Or just beginner in general in the whole dance profession?
Can you please explain what specialty skills are?
Kayce Brown yes, so “specialty” would be things that are an extra skill, a rare skill, something that isn’t very common that you can do really well. Like most pro-dancers can’t do aerial work, maybe like 10% have done it and maybe only 5% are proficient. So that would be a specialty. Or something like singing, acting, playing an instrument, juggling, partnering, break dancing, ice skating, pointe, tumbling etc.

@@ShyDanceProductions yay! thank you! :)
Thanks for this! What are your thoughts on going to college for dance? I wanna perform and choreograph, and eventually move into directing :)
Daryns _world This is a great question, that I get asked a lot! What type of performing do you want to pursue? What city do you want to pursue a performance career?
Shy Dance Productions well I’d wanna do back up dancing, commercials, movies, anything I guess that comes my way that isn’t super inappropriate 😂 and I’m in Arizona right now but I would wanna work in LA. I get free flights since my mom is a flight attendant and they’re only an hour long from here to there. I used to live near LA too so I’m familiar with some of the areas. I know you said for LA, hip hop is something you gotta be proficient in. Hip hop is my favorite and it’s where I’m most skilled in terms of genre. So yeah :p
Daryns _world yes then definitely LA! I trained at Dance Connection in AZ, small world ;-) yes girl use those free flights to go over to LA and train when you can. LA is the perfect place for all commercial dance a styles as well as transitioning into choreography and directing. So many opportunities to get gigs as an assistant and learn from the seasoned professionals.
Daryns _world ALSO on the whole college topic. I think it’s totally up to you. You can always go back to college if you wanted a degree. I think that it’s super important to have a degree if you’re wanting to be a teacher at a college/university or to own a face studio or something like that in the future. However I don’t feel it’s necessary to pursue a professional dance career. Honestly use this time while you’re young to get a head start, sometimes it takes awhile to get established, known, pay your dues before you really start gigging consistently. After you start working regularly as a dancer choreographers will naturally becomes more familiar with you, start to know and trust you, see your strengths, and you can get gigs as an assistant choreographer and you will learn way more then you will in a classroom. Same with directing, once you’re on tv/film/commercial gigs I would be talking to everyone on set, pick their brains and watch and take in everything. Have a notebook and take notes! You can learn sooooo much from watching the choreographer and director. I graduated early from HS and then attended a commercial entertainment program at a local college and then right after my 18th Bday I loved to LA, got an agent and started working. I was VERY DRIVEN, I took multiple classes everyday and said yes to every opportunity out there!!!!
Holler if you wanna talk more, I love helping peeps succeed in their dreams! ShyProductions@hotmail.com
Please keep making vids! Your so good!
Kayce Brown will do! I have another one coming this week, keep a look out ;-)
