What a great freakin movie. If this ever comes up on TCM, DO NOT MISS, great story, actors and direction. Highly underated, and any young movie geeks need to put on your list of top 100 movies to see before you die.🇺🇲..

Would Quegg said "The Buck Stopped With Him" had they stayed the course with 180? Or would he have sung the praise chorus: "Some Gave All"? Sometimes leaders have a Godlike complex making decisions to give themselves glory instead of leading by listening to others input. Watching this movie numerous times the closest Quegg came to the most lucid order was the crews failure to comply with the command of having helmets and life jackets on during a drill. I say closest because of the safety of the crew. It began with reasonable discipline of denial of 3 day pass for individual. However, when crew started covering for each other...Quegg was within his right to punish aidding and abetting, but he went over the line. He should've denied all 3 day passes, and left it at that. At the most no 3 day passes for 2 weeks, but not 3 months. That's irrational, but Quegg probably felt he wasn't getting through to his crew. 3 months punishment denying of 3 day pass though will not win loyalty.

I would think that Maryk, in the strictest sense, is not guilty of mutiny, even without the mention of other incidents such as the tow line, the dye marker, and the strawberries, in the later hearing. Ship is in a typhoon, and already damaged. Queeg, on the bridge, freezes for a length of time, forcing XO Maryk to give orders in his place. Queeg had refused to allow headquarters to be contacted for instructions. Someone had to be in command. When Queeg recovers, he issues a course heading which would endanger the ship. Maryk has no choice but to counter with the correct bearing. Queeg resists; there is a clear disagreement between his hazardous, incorrect directional order, and Maryk's correct, safer one. Maryk has no choice but to relieve the captain and legally take over. Not guilty.

In time of war such action jeopardizes the chain of command. While the Captain had not given any orders he does not seem to show he has lost control of himself or the situation, therefore making Mister Maryk guilty of superseding the chain of command, and openly going against his commanding officer. This is grounds enough for a court-martial. Relieving the Captain under 184 and Mister Keith going along with him is grounds enough for a charge of mutiny. What would have happened if the Caine, after obeying Maryk’s order crashed into another ship, an aircraft carrier, or possibly even the Flagship?

@@gallantcavalier3306 That isn’t the situation in the film, however. The film presents a commanding officer of a vessel in a crisis situation, who refuses to allow headquarters to be contacted for instructions, and has a panic attack which puts him out of touch for at least several seconds, during which he does nothing, while the ship remains in immediate danger of going down. Then he issues a dangerous heading order going further into the storm. The XO has no choice but to relieve him and countermand the order with a safer one. This is supported by other officers on deck. In defending his client, counsel brings up earlier incidents of mental instability, and Queeg cracks on the witness stand. Movie is pretty clear-cut. Not guilty.

@@steelers6titles It may seem as though I’m disagreeing, but I’m not. Because you are indeed correct, Lieutenant Maryk is Not Guilty, but if you take into consideration what Lieutenant Greenwald said towards the end about Lieutenant Keefer, HE is the guilty one, for if he hadn’t poisoned the well, meaning the other ward room officers, and had the officers supported Queeg when he needed it, perhaps such drastic action would not be required. But had that come out in Maryk’s Court-Martial, he would have been found guilty. That’s the situation in the film, but you are correct, Maryk is Not Guilty, but Keefer? He is most certainly Guilty!!

@@gallantcavalier3306 One question.... Did you Ever serve ??? ( and NOT in the reserves or NG!!! ) While you may know the technical definition of "Mutiny", you have NO Idea what you are talking about! The military has turfed out quality men like Maryk and left us with only ticket punching POS that ONLY care about themselves! This is Analogous to Trump and Biden. Biden being the POS that sends people to Die so he and his cronies can enrich themselves.

The typhoon scenario is lifted off the pages of history's Task Force 38's encounter with Typhoon Cobra.

My Dad was on a DMS just after the war clearing mines out of the China Seas when his ship had to plough through a typhoon either in '46 or '47. From what he told me it was about as bad an experience as the scene in this movie. Fortunately, his captain wasn't cracking up on the bridge, of course.

The scariest part of this scene never made it out of the book. Just after the typhoon passes and everyone is pointing fingers A call comes up of "Ship Capsized". To everyones horror they watch a capsized destroyer with red hull and dead propellers drift past them full of men. Nobody can say a word. Sends chills down my spine.

Had the memorable experience of seeing this many years ago at Boston University with an audience that was mostly unfamiliar with it. Throughout the whole film they loved Keefer's snarky commentary, which pretty clearly resonated with their wise ass collegiate sensibilities. At the end, when he was revealed to be a moral coward on the witness stand, a few in the crowd actually booed, as if they had been betrayed!

I was watching this movie with a retired Army Colonel. He said that the crew should have just chucked Captain Queeg over the side during this storm while they had the chance. Would have saved them a lot of trouble in the end.
