Content Lit with Simon Fay
США
Добавлен 22 апр 2020
Content Lit is a video essay project with the main aim to examine the best books of the 20th Century. Though I intend to keep the project broad in scope, if there’s any bias in the topic selection, it’s only in that I might gravitate towards subjects that have affected my own work as the author of numerous novels.
As I’ve said before, I’ve never actually used the term, “Lit,” in general conversation, though Urban Dictionary assures me that the term is the perfect descriptor for when “…something is turned up or popping.” While the subject matter on Content Lit can sometimes be serious, it’s always about exploring outstanding books in a fun and engaging manner. The best way to understand what I mean by that is to explore the videos yourself.

Lost in the Labyrinth - Stanley Kubrick vs Stephen King
The Shining Movie vs Book: With The Shining, the movie vs book debate often results in the movie being described as more layered while the book is thought of as more humane. In this video essay, I investigate these characterisations and ask whether Stanley Kubrick's version of the story has more in common with Stephen King's than is generally discussed.

A Question of Fate - Stanley Kubrick vs Anthony Burgess
Просмотров 2,9 тыс.2 года назад
A Clockwork Orange Movie vs Book: With A Clockwork Orange, the movie vs book debate often revolves around the final chapter that Stanley Kubrick chose not to include. In this video essay, I analyse the implication of its omission, which had the effect of robbing the story of Anthony Burgess’ effort to explore issues of fate and the redemption of mankind. ► Subscribe for more videos about books:...

Clarke’s historical collaboration. ► Subscribe for more videos about books: ruclips.net/channel/UC4O...

Watership Down by Richard Adams - Classic Book Recommendations
Is it just me, or was this book hard to understand and follow along?
scared the shit out of me as a kid.
As a dude getting back into books after a decade, this helps a lot. It's hard to decide between a bunch of things when I read Harry Potter or Warriors growing up. I'll try and get out of my comfort zone and visit my library more
What film is the channel ID from? At about 1:29 where "Content Lit" titles are shown over people flying over a lake to a library I suppose?
What Dreams May Come (1998)
I appreciate your balance view of film and literature. So many reviews i see try to 1 is better than the other but its so subjective and each has their strengths and weaknesses as you pointed out. They can be both great and bad
I think it helped that I was in my early forties when I read “Never Let Me Go”. I could never quite express my feelings about the book other than a “foreboding horror”. The kids seemed like normal kids, but as I read on, the things that were missing started to make me feel uneasy, such as: where are the parents? The school isn’t an orphanage, so, what’s going on? I wasn’t overtly conscious about mysteries like this, but the more I read, the more uneasy I felt. What really broke my heart is that the children not only accepted their role in life, but did so without complaint or protest. I have the feeling this could happen with very little pushback from society.
_"Well, I see the value in difference, in the new. You offer nothing new. Just a younger grape… from the same vine, destined for the same old bottle."_ - Hari Seldon - Foundation.

Love this book!
Chromakopia
Talk Talk's song "Such a shame" is about Dice Man.
"I don't believe in Hell." - Funny, because some would see the Overlook Hotel as Hell.
What a fantastic video. Just finished reading the original trilogy and you were able to put into words a lot of my thoughts.
'FOREWARD' is misspelled [6:59]? HAH! Good to know they misspelled words back in the day, when so many more people read than nowadays.... Interesting vlog!
Thoughtful! New subscriber.
MATHEMATICIANS SHOULD BE DOING ALL THE LOGISTICAL PLANS for humans
This is where Steve Jobs , Bill Gates et al got their intitial thoughts from. Also from Nikola Tesla, Leonardo da Vinci, Copernicus, Galileo and many more minds from the past
Younger people just dont know about Asimov!!???.❤😮
It may not be a masterpiece of horror but it is a masterpiece of surrealism.
Great job! I enjoy Rob Ager's work as well.
Thank you so much for your 3 videos on Foundation original trilogy. I think you did an amazing job in setting the tone, discussing the story, given highlights of the themes surrounding the franchise and here giving a bit more information about Asimov himself. I recently was able to read the original trilogy so it's been very enlightening to get additional context and analysis of its content. I would be extremely curious to see if one day you may explore the Apple TV+ show made from the Foundation, especially because it seems to go so far away from the original books. Thanks again for the videos you made!
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed them! I hadn't watched the tv show at the time of making these videos, but I've watched it since. I'm generally pretty open to Hollywood tweaking source material, but the show so far has somewhat missed the point of the series/Asimov's work. Seems like they just wanted the brand name of Foundation to attach a large franchise budget to. That said, I do actually enjoy some elements of the show on its own merits, and generally speaking I look forward to season 3. I may make a video about it someday, but I'd like to cover the other books first.
Never found Jack that sympathetic even in the novel. King is a bit delusional regarding this work in my opinion
I read this like 12 years old. Completely awesome novel and so sad, I felt like I was a cheela.
Appropriate images for a a great read.
Magically delicious.
Read it in two languages, came away impressed by several ideas: what we would now call big data, our growing distance from how technology works, societies and languages as machines. I was much less impressed with the characters and writing style. When thinking of all these topics Apple's adaptation is pathetic.
Still one of my all time favourite books
I saw the first season of Foundation on TV and was mightily confused at first. But then I watched the current two seasons again and got more and more intrigued. I have since then started to read the foundation books (starting with the prequels). The concept of psychohistory is fascinating. In our current world with all the conflicts and societal changes looming and brewing I have been wondering why there is not already a continuous discipline to analyse past and present of human history to inform ourselves of possible crisis points giving us the opportunity to make the necessary changes to avoid possible desasters. Especially with the influence of Social Media, the Internet, and AI I think that has almost become a necessity. At this point I am wondering if humanity will not finally succeed to make itself superfluous, a process ironically begun with the industrial age which was just supposed to help us progress and make life easier for us. It remains to be seen whether we or some form of us will actually even make it to this galactical Empire Asimov described. Judging by all the crises and possible desasters looming and the fact that we seem to have all but abandoned spaceflight that seems less and less likely.
Kubrick was very condescending and critical of Stephen King's book. It is, I believe, a work of genius. Kubrick should have been more respectful, I think.
King should stop being a bitch. Criticism is valid. I dislike both of those arrogant asswipes but Kubrick was not in the wrong other than his treatment of Shelley Duvall
Kubricks version is way better
The first half of the book and the movie are fairly similar. It's the second half of the film, around the time Danny enters 237 right up until the end, where the film version really shines (pardon the pun), going into a delirious and electrifying maximum overdrive (another pun, sorry), leaving the book well behind. The maze, the axe instead of a mallet, actually killing Halloran, the fact that what happens to Dannny in 237 is left ambiguous, and the eerie way in which Halloran is summoned to the hotel, etc., are all vast improvements.
My favourite was Gladia
Lent this book to an acquaintance who described herself as a "Christian" and avid reader. Next day she returned it and refused to speak with me ever again. Happy ending!
Interesting and intelligent narrative but i can't hear any of it dt it sounding like Connor MacGregor.
My only complaints with this movie are the unrealistic wounds on the ghoul in room 237, and the fake static skeletons that Wendy encountered when she was running around.
Having read Consider Phlebas twice, I always found the part with the fat guy on the island a drudge. Other than that the book is one of my favorite or my actual favorite of his. Whoops, just noticed I've commented before.
The part where the drag queen listens to the 'the bird' and floats into a dreamlike state of a world where she would be with Vinny in world where only love matter- not prejudice, no hatred, no sex... just love/ This one of the most moving parts I've ever read.
My take on the eye ball cufflinks is they record the evil he's commits with his hands during that night. The drippy bloody accents keeps it fresh in his mind to savor (drink? ) later. Bloody fangs while he slussies.
Obviously, nobody would ever accuse Stephen King of being an intellectual.
I thought it was nice to come here to try to shed some light on the story only to be more cornfused by this guys accent and the way he tries to explain it.
Kubrick himself said the Overlook IS supernatural
Also i read background years ago that his friend, Harper Lee (Mockinbird author), a southern lady and writer, completely assisted Capote in presenting him and arranging meetings with the many folks he used.
It definitely works watching the movie before the book. I'm one of those who usually ends up parroting the typical "book is better" but I find myself jaded by the horrible Stephen King adaptations. But with the Cloud Atlas story, it's absolutely amazing both ways, and I don't think I would have ever enjoyed the novel if the movie was created!
Ager never claimed that Danny let Jack out, cause he felt sorry for him,he did it in order to lure him into the maze so that he could trap him,I don't know where you got that from?
Ager is full of it
Never got into Kerouac or Burroughs, but Hubert Selby SPOKE to me.
😎😎😎
Great movie but the theory of evolution is a load of crap.
The author of this video needs to better educate himself on the subject if he does not believe "there is some New World Order running the govt's of the world", at this point there is enough credible documentation by those involved in it themselves to deny a globalist technocratic scheme is at work in the social, economic engineering of the globe. Not only does Clockwork Orange depict the order out of chaos methods used by such controllers along with the desire to implement ever changing methods of mind control to dominate the population but it also depicts the recruitment of thugs and criminals into the corrupt power structure/establishment first with the droogs being police and then Alex himself being accepted into the compromised mid level controller class no doubt in furtherance of more officially sanctioned dirty work.
King's more recent political social media rants and unhinged bouts of T.D.S. (Trump Derangement Syndrome) sure seem to indicate he has many skeletons in his closet he is desperate to keep from getting exposed should the corrupt crooked establishment that enables, uses and protects famous characters like him ever gets taken down.
Liking the use of Legend of Galactic Heroes footage.
its my favorite book of all time.
You've got good taste.
