COVID19 WINNER Dance Your PhD 2021: Biochemical & Biophysical Studies of the COVID-19 N Protein
Biochemical & Biophysical Studies of the COVID-19 Nucleocapsid Protein with RNA
This video describes the PhD research of Heather Masson-Forsythe as a part of the Barbar Lab in the Biochemistry & Biophysics department of Oregon State University. The COVID-19 disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 has, within a period of only a year, infected more than 88 million people resulting in over 1.9 million deaths worldwide, as of January 2021, and the numbers are still growing. There is an urgent need to accelerate research into the mechanisms of virus infection, transmission and control. Even with vaccines becoming available, we face hurdles of viral mutation, difficulties in vaccine distribution, misinform...

Your skills and talents are inspiring
How productive.
Awesome, now do one about the side effects and how it doesn’t stop you from getting or transmitting Covid
i like ir, a lot !
Best explanation and best dance of such that I’ve seenu. I happened upon it magically!
Amazing!
Wow!!!! This is really good. This captures the movement of RNA and Proteins so well!
This is a winner!
As an early participant in the contest (2009 - and I also used a hat as a PTM!) I've watched many entries over the years. This is a clear favorite - close to my heart as a fellow biochemist. I'm impressed by the way you use movement (and accessories - the scarf for the viral genome is genius!) to illustrate concepts, and by the quality of your movement and dancing. So many different styles too! Congratuations!
Brilliant
Amazing especially like the choice of lenght for the dance well done Heather.
Excellent. I look forward to seeing the Bolshoi Ballet performing this work of art/science fusion.
Beautiful science in motion. Congratulations.
I'm watching this and all I can think is how incredibly out of breath I get just shopping at Costco with a mask on. I had no idea someone could do so much physically like this, awesome, you certainly are an inspiration in more ways then one. Congratulations, I love your comment that working on the virus "has shown how quickly science can move when scientists communicate and collaborate openly and combine resources towards a common goal"
В маске, шифруется 😂
Heard about you on NPR this morning, and had to come look! Truly fantastic 🤓
Потанцуем?)
So creative! Wow!
Congratulations, incredible. The idea of representing the mutation with the color change of the cap was brilliant.
Well done! You don't just explain your work, but visually interpret it with great talent, skill, and flair! Whatever the future holds for you, I hope you continue to use your skill as a science communicator. We need that now more than ever! All the best, and CONGRATULATIONS!!
This was the best!
Great job!
Brava, H & M!!
Biochemistry rules!! Congratulations.
I got it. Will stay away from red scarfs. Thanks for the awesome explanation.
Came here from ARS Technica. I thought you might like to know that the video here & at AT starts at the end!
That's the best interpretative dance I've seen, both with the transition between dance forms and the techniques within each. I do enjoy the many DYPhD entries that created songs, however the terrific music selection and crystal-clear voiceover narration done here put the dance itself front and center. Fantastically well done! My two annual nerd party sessions are DYPhD and the Darwin Awards. I'm missing our ritual Gatherings of the Geeks. Soon, soon...
Thank you so much! :)
I know this is not really relevant to biochemistry, but may I know what's the name of lamp used for wall decoration in chapter 2? Starting at 1:20
I'm actually not sure, but it's in the Linus Pauling Building at Oregon State University, so you might be able to find info about it!
@@heathermasson-forsythe4003 thank you so much.
Very well done Heather and Margaux! Lovely, dynamic, and informative. I can't wait for the follow up, "Dancing Your PhD, the Musical!"
This is awesome Heather! Really well made :)
