The desktop computer ushered in an era of software and hardware for graphic design and print production. This 1990s song parody of the Billy Joel hit was produced by Dan Brill, founder and publisher of Graphic Exchange, Canada’s original magazine on digital publishing. It chronicles the people, products, and concepts that brought us to where we are today. Enjoy.

Very fortunate to have these guys close by.
I worked for a small shop in Berkeley Ca, circa 1985. This was the machine I learned on. It was quite a machine for me during a time of technological change.
Im a beginner what do you use for type wash?
I am a new volunteer at the MOP, began in January this year. Since this video, I have learned that wood type is measured in lines not points, etc. I am making my librarian heart sing researching typeface and wood type in this very large type collection. The MOP is such a good place to volunteer.
You'd better hurry up on that keyboard; the front page is nearly ready to go.
Another source for brushes to clean channel entrances is Gordon Brush in City of Industry, CA. The brush you want is 1 Row Brass Scratch Brush, part no. 11BA
Promo SM 🔥
Thank you guys. Where does one find "Red Lead"?
Very cool!
The second scanner, the one in the black and white photo with the woman operating it does not look like a Hell, rather, a Crosfield.
Even if the view count is small, one day someone will need this, they'll look for it, and they'll find it thanks to you
Y'all are doing an excellent job with the filming too.
That's a hit
I like your vibe so much better than the other print museums
Poor slug face how to fix?
At 5:20 it is interesting that you said ‘lower case’ and ‘capital’ letters vs ‘upper case’ I found type cases in the ‘upper’ position, that had both ‘Caps’ AND ‘Small Caps’ Most modern keyboard manufacturers tend to avoid the label “upper case lock” and just use “Caps Lock” Sorry, in my mind from written tests in school. Oh…(in all caps)… GREAT PRESENTATION!
Does that elevator have any other function than reducing the overall height of the machine (and keping the assembling area in better view of the operator)?
NY here! 😂
I just subbed to your channel 👍🏻 your pressing room video came up on my phone 📱. 😎 I am surprise by the amount of press machines that you have! I am currently watching the pressing machine at THE SACRAMENTO HISTORY MUSEUM AT THE BEE as they call it. 2 gentlemen there HOWARD AND JARED run THE BEE. They have 3 press machine! One of The machines they have is HUGE! It is the called RHE WASHINGTON HAND PRESS. Looking fw to seeing more of your vlogs 👍🏻 these printing press machines are very fascinating!😎😎🤩🤩🤩🤩
Thank you both.
After getting a tutorial on your letterpress a few years ago it really sparked something inside of me and got me into relief printing. I find all of the different ways of printing fascinating. Thank you all for the knowledge and inspiration.
Too modern for this old Lino operator!!
Fascinating
Thank you so much my friend, I recently acquired a 91 year old Rubber Stamp business that uses a Ludlow and our slugs started coming out half broken and full of bubbles. We figured out how to do most of the maintenance but couldn't get our plunger unstuck. The ice cube tricked worked like a charm and we were able to get it cleaned and fix the problem. Cheers, you're a life saver
Thank you. I need to get up to visit in person.
Great video. It would be great to see some dates!
The "Shift Happens" book looks gorgeous. It costs more than what earn monthly as typography professor, ha ha, but it is nevertheless gorgeous. Congratulations to Mr. Wichary if he designed it. And if he didn't, congratulations to the designer(s) and to him also for the research. Just by looking at his body language one senses he is deeply enthused by the topic.
I just miss the view of the different on-stage keyboards every-one on the panel is referencing.
I love this discussion. Thanks for uploading it. I admire the knowledge of all the people on the panel.
Loved this sales pitch video, Mitchel! So sorry I can't make it to your sale, but I hope it goes well! - Hans
I admire this guy as hero, he saved my exam. I used his front bellcentremnet and it worked like a charm in the exam cheat paper, Thank you Matthew, for your wonderful inventions.
Great if links to the rest of this conversation (parts 2 and 3) are included here.

(NMIH Frank again) So the magazine you want to change you move to the "casting position if you were using it , correct? Also if you mag. has the sword type lock, insert it before removing,.
That’s correct. And yes, the sword, or lock must be in place. If you try and remove a magazine without locking it, as soon as it’s lifted off the escapement, the mats can drain out for a “jackpot.”
Could you show also how to change the other magazines?
(CP is NMIH Frank.) Thank you.
Thank you Dave, and MOP.
Oh My! Love this press! I have a 219, but those automatic paper grippers and release are wickedly cool. Prints while in reverse. Wish I lived closer, I want to give it a go!
No electricity needed! Only six of these known to exist.
لي كل السعادة أن أكون احد العاملين الماهرين على هذه الماكنة
But how long to clean all six? ;-}}}
Very cool!
Absolutely amazing.
Dave you let me down many times, when I contacted for for help. I lost my shop and lost my reason to live.
Best video on the Linotype I have seen in many years.
😌 ρɾσɱσʂɱ
this video is actually 16 minutes.. nice try though!
Dave. Well done!
I want to go!
Give that girl an Oscar!
