Winging it session 67 - A wee bit close
Просмотров 572 часа назад
For todays session I went out with out a shim and either I am getting the hang of this sport or I have my feet in a different place as i rode this board without a shim for 20 sessions from session 11 to 31 and I struggled every time I tried to get up on foil. Today was not like that and after a little tweaking to the mast position i found if anything I was over my front foot more than usual. Gr...
Winging it session 66 - Pretty Fly
Просмотров 804 часа назад
with the colder days setting in i thought it time to wear some extra layers so why not put some style into this sport. I look like a character from SSX but it made no difference to my buoyancy or riding plus every time i looked down i could see some wicked flares flapping in the wind so they are here to stay. Not the strongest wind in the bay but as soon as i got out into the centre it was game...
Winging it session 65 - Stretch Armstrong

Session 66 of holding a wing above my head and for todays session I returned to a previous local spot that is one of my favourites. Despite being loads of seaweed, the water gets deep really quickly so it doesn't take long to get up and riding. Todays wind was blowing around 20 knots on arrival but it was due to pick up so I decided on using my least favourite wing, my original 4.5 m Cabrinha x...

Winging it session 64 - a good grounding

Filmed on the 11th of October 2024 at Wee Ganavan in Oban this was my 64th session with a wing over my head. Todays wind was due to pick up around half an hour after a started and what i wasn't used too was the ocean ground swell which was rolling about a metre until the board The fact i riding my 90cm mast which is great for big waves the ground waves were making the foil go crazy when not on ...
Winging it session 63 - Reached the limit
Просмотров 253День назад
Well they say you dont know your limits until you cross them. Today was that day as the wind was blowing the strongest I had ever tried to ride. My intention was to use my 3.5m wing but unfortunately it appears to have a small leak as by the time I had it out in the water it was already soft and therefore dangerous to continue with. The only other wing i had with me was my 5.5m so lets just say...
Winging it session 62

With the darker night creeping in, I tried to get a sunset session but it was almost dark by then time i got out the water. Not the strongest wind for this session probably gusting 25 at the most so I was intending to practice my turns a little more however with the very choppy sea state and the lack of constant wind then this resulted in "mowing the lawn" more than i should have. My jumps are ...
Winging it Session 61 - dark days are a coming

After a long anticipated wait over the last few days up to this session I finally got a chance to play. It was a dark old day in bonnie Scotland so the footage is a little dark but it was great to get my new fly mount up and running. I was a little conscious of loosing the camera to begin with that I kept checking it was still there. I tried a few different angles and i think the leading edge s...
Winging it session 60 - First turns

Well it has taken me more than 50 sessions with my foil to be able to do (this simple task to some I'm sure) but I am delighted to announce that after many, many attempts I finally got onto my toes while on foil for the first time. I quickly remembered about not going too far upwind and was soon in the water for my sins but still delighted to get over this hurdle. I was trying turn too quickly ...
Winging it session 59 - Oyster bed city
Просмотров 12214 дней назад
A new location for session 59 and I found myself in Loch Creran. It looked great from the road but i soon discovered that the bay was pretty shallow and full of oyster beds so maybe not the best starting point for a foil. I began my session with my 1c shim in the centre position exactly the same as session 58 but i soon discovered that you need a lot of wind to match the lift with the 1c and i ...

    That’s looks like fun! I’m contemplating getting a wing to do this at my local beach. Do you feel like the wing is distracting you from keeping the nose down? I imagine that might be what’s getting you thrown off the board.

    You ride so low in the water. Your foil is more efficient when its closer to the surface. You should also be practicing S turns while on foil and less riding in a straight line. This will help you with your gybe. Also make your gybe longer and don't rush it

    • @michielfermie6222

      I fully agree! All the things I also did. Spent too much time mowing the lawn, too little turning. Too low on the water. Rushing to finish the gibe. For me, the gibe started to click after I spent alot of time riding as much downwind as I dared. From downwind, it's just a flick of the wing and it's done. And trusting the foil to keep gliding. And it will...!

  • @michielfermie6222
    @michielfermie6222 3 месяца назад

    The progress is real! Your pumping is getting better, but you stop as soon as the board starts lifting. Then you stall and fall. One or two more (big) pumps more to gain more speed. And I guess try to lean a bit more on the front leg to keep the nose down. No need for shimming anything. Especially at this stage.

  • @rscaneable
    @rscaneable 3 месяца назад

    Your progress is evident. Maybe a longer boards is better for more Stability.

  • @Netgazum
    @Netgazum 3 месяца назад

    Great to see you getting on foil now! To be honest the struggles you have had are just down to equipment only to this point. Ok but a few more things here. 1. You are stalling the foil so let the board speed increase before coming out of the water. This is why you board goes up and then falls down, you need more speed before lift off. 2. You shorter length board is a bit of a problem in the swell. 3. I can't tell but it looks like your mast is 60cm? If it is you should be on a 75CM mast because your foil is breaching like at 9:33 you can see your foil tip breaches the water and you fall. You can see this breaching on almost all of your falls and you can tell if you look at the foil and spray coming from the foil just before you fall. In this case you don't have enough ride height to stay above the wave/swell and your boards nose is crashing into to the wave. Also its harder to keep the foil underwater in swell with a shorter mast and this will prevent you from having longer rides on foil and progressing. Good luck, love the videos!

  • @StefanWelker

    when you get fast enough take the wing up to add less power. once you are on foil you need less power.

    Good you got a bigger wing and that made a much bigger difference. Still would have preferred a 6M if you are just letting the wind pull you on to foil but it looks like you are starting to pump more now. The strike should be the only wing you use now until you can get on foil at will. Then you can start going smaller but I would imagine this would be your primary wing for some time.

  • @rscaneable

  • @PeterGogolin

    Basically I can see that the bigger wing causes more propulsion and you get more air time. Now it comes to the right stance, weight distribution during Lift-off and balance during foil flights.

  • @Netgazum
    @Netgazum 3 месяца назад

    Your wing is to small for your skill level. To get up with that you need to pump the wing and foil. You need a 6m wing.

    • @PeterGogolin
      @PeterGogolin 3 месяца назад

      The same counts for the board. Its way too small. He needs a bigger one to focus on wing, stance and liftoff.
