The Astonishingly Average Modeller
Добавлен 27 июл 2021
Layout building, modelling tips, tricks, and advice from someone who might know a thing or two about this. If there is anything you want to know about the world of model railways, including scenic work, troubleshooting, maintenance and running and I haven't already done a video about it please let me know an one will miraculously appear as quick as I can make it
NEM Adapters - The Best Thing for your Rolling Stock
Let's look at these 3D printed NEM coupling adapters for older Hornby and kit built rolling stock. These might be the best thing I've ever bought for my modelling.
Unbelievably, I can't find a single link to the guy I got them from, so keep an eye out at modelling shows in the South East!

The Hornby TTA - A Train Set Classic Reborn
Просмотров 917 месяцев назад
In this video I look at the Hornby TTA tanker. A rudimentary version of this wagon was a mainstay of train sets and the Hornby Railroad range for almost 50 years however now they've had a proper crack at it, but is it any good?

Lofty Expectations - Is a Sam'sTrains Mystery Box worth it?
Просмотров 20010 месяцев назад
Today we review a mystery box put together and consisting of contents made by Sam's Trains, another model railway content creator. This box is 1 of 25, but is it worth the £20 cost? The profit he must be making from these boxes is huge, and while rather please, I'd imagine that some people may be feeling a little let down by the cost versus the contents in all honesty. Is it really worth it, I'...

Join me for a new series as I embarked on my fifth scale! Can I tame flexitrack in my first experience with table top narrow gauge modelling? In this episode, I create my baseboard and lay the small continuous loop of track. This is going to be my most hands on project to date, but can I keep it on the rails? (boo!)

Model Railway Mystery Boxes - Head to Head

In this video I take a look at two of the best known model railway mystery boxes at the same time, head to head, and decide what one is more worthy of your hard earned £10. Unless another player enters the fray, this is likely the last model railway mystery box video (unless I go completely mad and try one of the Sawyer Models £40 ones) as I don't think I can keep beating that drum forever! Think of this video as a learning experience for both of us in using spray foam ...

Testing a Model Locomotive with a Nine Volt Battery
I have a Hornby 2721 class that the qheels just... don't freeroll? My other hornby model, a Hymek, rolls back and forth fine. I don't have any track and I'm a bit skeptical about putting a battery to the wheels. It's the 2788 numbered model if that helps any.
And replacing the fishplates makes better electric connection
Thanks Good tip!!!
Thanks for this great tip appreciated
I have a coupling in one of my Hornby mk4s and it is deformed so i cant get it out, what should i do?
Hornby have definitely upped their game recently I think that they have realised that they have competition. Good video keep up the good work mate.
The average number of parts in a Rapido 4 wheel wagon is 44, I doubt any of the other wagons in that train are anything like that many, the H&BR fish can from triang for example in your train has 7 parts, that is a lot of molded detail and no ability to offer variation within a range of liveries of a single wagon.
Nice review. I have the Guy Fawkes one, rather expensive but lovely nonetheless! Joachim
I agree that Rapido wagons are a bit on the expensive side, you will find their open wagons the same price as they seem to have one price fits all for most of the range. They are still good wagons but not that much if any better than the competition in complexity Oxford Rail being a good example of very similar looks and finish. The one thing Rapido do have that others RTR don't is the brass bearings in the axle boxes but some of the kit wagons do have them as well.
The big job is keeping the track clean, those track rubbers are not too recommended by many railway modelers
I'm pretty sure you're wrong about his audience. Could you point to your source for the statement about the demographic of the audience?
Certainly, the majority of comments on his channel, plus the most popular videos of his point to a demographic of mainly younger people.
@@astonishinglyaveragemodeller Sam has published a video where he details the actual demographics of his channel subscribers, and they follow the hobby age range quite well. Quite likely older folks don't comment much on his videos, but I have no reason to doubt the veracity of his claims. There is no one else who reviews quite as many models or broadcasts the modelling news with quite the regularity or completeness that he does, I suspect a few older modellers don't admit to checking his channel from time to time.
I'm well past the bloom of middle age and I'm a fan of Sams - mostly for his reviews and his mellow demeanor - there are more than enough "Serious Model Railroaders" (tm) on youtube already. As I recall, he was pretty clear on his intent with these mystery boxes - a couple of good bits and a random assortment of stuff. Based on his usual "retail" prices it seemed a pretty good deal. I did not buy one because the shipping to Canada doubled the cost. You raise a really good point about his younger audience members. As a parent it could look a bit underwhelming. As for the scrap bits - I would use that balancing coach body as the basis for a small ticket stall on a preserved railway, or perhaps a hut for platelayers etc. Thanks for all your mystery box reviews and other content.
Great stuff, in my experience the best wagon kits, are Nigel Brooks 3D printed ones, supreme detail, easy to build and cheaper than Dundas
Just what I needed. Thanks.
Great start. I'm doing my OO on foam over a folding door.
The white diagonal stripes indicate the end opening door
Thanks for sharing, friendly and knowledgeable people like you make future reviews even better
It's a shame that all of that great detail is on the Underside ..oh well.
In a way yes, I suppose, however that is where all that detail is on the prototype, so not something to mark the wagon down on!
Pity they don't do TT120
Maybe one day, who can say!
once you start with Accurascale there is no stopping, the detail is fantastic. all the best
The detail is great, the biggest disappointment is the lack of a certificate as mentioned on their website. I know it's a small thing, but as a limited edition and given the website says it should be included, it really ought to be.
Nice video. You take 'hand of God' to the extreme! I'm (painfully slowly) working on a new Inglenook project ... If it works it'll definitely be RUclipsable.
Use a bent piece of wire as an uncoupling tool.

Hello A good comparison video there, Although I have to say, as an N gauge modeller, I personally prefer the Sawyer Models Mystrey Bags (and he has recently changed how these are done, and are now £10 only, no more £20 or £30 plus bags). I have had several of Sawyers about 6 or 7 now, (bought 2 last weekend...lol) although never tried the Rocket Railways ones (do they do those for N gauge?). Also I can add that there is a firm called "North Western Models" (they do small white metal, plastic and laser cut models and items) and they now do a 'Mystrey Box', for both N and OO gauge, although these are around £25 (for the N gauge one, not sure how much the OO one is), which might be worth a try if your feeling flush...lol. Good video though, thanks.
The best ideas are developed by trying new methods and ways. The cliff already looks good, with additional green (moss, very small bushes and gras) it will even look better. Keep up the good work. All the best Valentin
Crazy stuff that foam. I’ve used it on my layout a little and it can have a kind of its own 😂. Well done for getting the end result 👏
I love experimenting, always something to learn.
you and me both mate except mine is in the garden , muddling ahead
Hey, good on ya for percevering with that foam monster, lol. It takes a lot of imaginating to get to your end goal. My wife has none, so I always get funny looks from her at the start of a project.
Malformed popcorn ball hill
Not a bad idea for extra bits on my alien landscape on my layout . I’ve used a multitude of things for landscape but not this yet 😊
Dear Sir, Methinks these British locos are very good looking. I was lucky to acquire some Hornbys, but they are all steam 0-4-0s. But, these green classes 35, 37, 45s are great. Cheers frm Brazil!
Should have cleaned the commutator whilst the two sides of the motor body were separated. Basic oiling on the moving parts and grease on the cogs, and oil the axles for the two none driving wheels
I literally can not believe that the commutator was not cleaned and also the motor was not lubricated on reassembly. No offence - but his video was pointless.
Great channel, plenty of hands on benchwork, subbed.
Thank you so much!
Instead of glue you could use double sided tape.
Good value
The dog seems to approve
Hello I've had five of these Sawyer Model 'Mystery Bags' so far and every time I see thier stand at a show I will buy one. I've all sorts of stuff in them but all useful in some way and those little bits (like the Peco milk churns and things like that) are the sort of things that you wouldn't want to buy on their own and always worth more than what I paid. A great bit of fun. Just for info, Andy Sawyer did tell me he saw what Rocket Railways were doing and decided to do it differently and give people 'value for money' bags instead some items are pre-owned but of reasonable quality. Thanks
the D prefix went over into the early BR blue period ,, it is known as pre TOPS ,, the tops system was an automated system introduced for the monitoring and tracking of locomotives so they knew what types were available and where and if they needed re fueling servicing etc
Been looking for that mail hanger but no one seems to sell them anywhere
I was wondering why you only put glue on one side of the flatbed when you were laying the stir sticks
You need grease the gears.
Always my experience although I can usually get to them. One has been at a similar location as you are experiencing and I eventually realized the point was not sitting completely flat. It was just enough to lift the loco off tgd track especially at slow speeds . I continually keep a keen eye on what’s going on and often it is a case of adding another pin somewhere. Good luck with that
Congratulations on your century
Nice ,like your style 👌😎☕️ regards Fred
Very nice little score you made there. Dogs are the same across the world, interested in stuff they shouldn't be. Gotta love em' though.
I'm very impressed with this box, I'll definitely get another, thanks for watching!
@@astonishinglyaveragemodeller They do seem to represent a decent value. I am not sure if anyone here in the US offers things like this. I do slot cars as well as a bit of model railroading so I am always looking for a good deal. I just started watching your channel and I especially enjoy the lack of pretense, much like me. I have been a slot car/model RR'er , since 1963, so I have been exposed to quite a lot. However, I almost always learn something from you creators. I believe we are living in "The Golden Age" of modeling right now. The aftermarket is just mind numbing with it's variation of stuff available. I have enjoyed modeling for some six decades now and I have to say, the internet, RUclips and folks like you have done more for modeling than any other one thing. Modeling in general was going flat until the word got out via the internet that it was still pretty cool and fun thing to do. Your channel is fun to watch, the best of all reasons to watch. Keep on Keepin' on.
