Si Musical Journey
Новая Зеландия
Добавлен 20 май 2023
I have been a music educator for the last 20 years and have been playing and gigging for the last 40 years. Over the years I had training in both classical and jazz genres, playing in orchestras, jazz combos, big bands and pop bands/duos and electronic dance groups. I have also directed youth jazz bands and big bands.
I explore the rhythmic and melodic elements of improvisation in a usable way including backing tracks created with demonstrations and also to use to practice to. The improvisation videos are written for (Eb) Alto sax, (Bb)Tenor sax, Clarinet, (and concert instruments) Guitar.
This will help anyone who want's to develop their aural skills, improvisation skills, fluency and just spend more time on their instrument playing and getting better and having fun.
I am developing a patreon page for extra resources at patreon.com/si_musical_journey.
If you would like to support me and join me on my journey through time and space :-)

Da Good Bits # 2 - Bb (Low) Edition
"In this video, we tackle the second chorus of the F blues "Da Good Bits" with an improvised solo that shows saxophone phrasing and articulation. Mastery is key, so we repeat each 4-bar phrase 4 times before playing the entire solo 4 times.
You’ll see how improvisation on different instruments, like piano or guitar, can take on the breath and articulation of woodwinds.
At the end, there’s a special aural challenge: ‘Da Good Bits #3 - Blues in F’ without notation! Can you learn it by ear? The next video will include the notation for this solo-keep practicing and safe musical journeys!"

Here is a chorus of the F blues First up we play and improvised solo through a chorus of the F blues. Then we take each 4 bar phrase and repeat each phrase 4 times as good repetition is the key to mastery. Then there is the solo repeated 4 times. The idea is to emulate the sound of the saxophone, the way it phrases, articulates, and works it's way through this chorus. When I am just improvising...

This video is in 3 sections. First I get you to play through the 7 modes of the major scale, ascending 1 octave in C major. Then we go up and down the octave of each mode with a 2 bar musical phrase at the end each example. Both these sets of exercises have been in the key of C major but the next section gets you to compare each mode from the same starting note of C , firstly by playing the not...

FEEL THE VIBE # 4 - TENOR SAX

Welcome to Si's world and Learn to Improvise, Here is 3 x 16 bar phrases that were created on the clarinet and the alto sax, then transfered to the other instruments. They use quite a bit of syncopation and use semi-quavers but the tempo is fairly slow at 83 bpm. I recorded my-self jamming along to the track and then chopped the good bit's into phrases. then I had to transcribe my own playing ....

Wow Excellent!!! I'm enjoying all of this!!!
Hey man I enjoy this!!! It sounds like how Reggae and African music horns and brass lines should be written.
Thanks so much. It's fun to make and I really like to hear that you are enjoying it.
How can I download the PDF?
You can download from my patreon page. The link is on my home page or in the description of the video. It is a small cost of 3 usd. Please let me know if I can answer any more questions.
I see for you, repetition is the key for learning
Yes, really correct repetition is good. I need to balance RUclips videos with keeping a challenge but also being reasonable. When I teach or work on something difficult, I slow down and work on accuracy first as a foundation, then repetition while slowly increasing speed after that. 👍
Phase 5 is quite challenging given how fast is the fingering.
Yes it is, I like to make the last phrase more difficult to give a higher challenge. It can be useful to freeze the video and slowly repeat each phrase , to develop the muscle memory to enable faster playing. I hope you are finding these videos helpful. Please let me know if you have any constructive feedback to help me understand how to keep improving these resources. Another idea is to slow the video down with the RUclips controls. This can allow more solid repetition.
@@Si-musical-journey Good idea to slow down clip. It sure takes a lot of patience and repetition. You have many lessons for me at my current level, beginner-intermediate. Thanks again.
Many thanks for the lesson. Great
Thank you, I will try to do another 7 phrase challenge soon. They are fun to make.
So helpful!
Thankyou.
@@Si-musical-journey You are most welcome!

I'm very happy that it is useful for you.

Wonderful. Thank you for using this and letting me know it is useful. 😊. It makes me want to create more.
These videos are great. Rhythm is such a challenge. This is really helpful
Thank you, I am very happy to know it is helping.
damn simon what a bop.
The tearjerking sounds of a wind blown stick expressing my soul 🙌 (is that too deep?)
Really helpful video lesson. Thanks
Hi Simon, Thank you for creating this exercises. It's very helpful. By the way, for the last two minutes of the clip, do I keep repeating the same notes over and over?
Hi, I'm so happy you are finding these exercises helpful. I add the backing track at the end of each video so it can be used to just play/improvise. You can use the notes/rhythms from the exercises and try changing parts of them. I have started putting the A4 pdf's and backing tracks on "Patreon" for downloading to make this easier. Please let me know if you have any more questions? ( Or ideas that I could create material to try to answer any question you have)
W
HI, how do we improvise with phrases of "questions and answers"... Thank you
Hi, That is a great question :-) Now for the answer:-0, When I teaching my students in a lesson, this is much easier as we can have a musical conversation with our instruments, normally jamming over a backing track and taking turns to play. ( I will try to make some video's providing material/exercises that can help with this) There are so many ways to do this, which is what makes it interesting. One way is to break out elements from the question, you can match parts of what they do within of the framework of the chord changes as you move through the chord progression; 1) If they play a 2 bar phrase then you could reply with a 2 bar phrase. (4 bar phrase, reply with a 4 bar phrase) 2) if they play fast with lots of notes then you could either come back at them with a challenge and lots of notes or contrast with less notes. 3)If they play a particular rhythm then you could play the rhythm back to them, but with different notes. 4) If they play high then you could play high in reply. (or low and low), or do the opposite of what they do to create contrast. The way I'm thinking at the moment is that you take elements of what they do and send it back to them so that then they can react and go back and forth between you in the same way people have a conversation. It can be nice when there is a common thread linking both players together. Does that help? or can you provide more questions? Kind regards Simon
@@Si-musical-journey Thank you so much for your amazing explanation!!!
Excellente..as in French 🇫🇷
GREAT STUFF THANK SO MUCH FOR SHARING😊👌👍
Thank you. I love hearing from comments that it is useful, I use these materials with my students and it is fun to create new material to help. 🙏
Great job! Thanks!
Thank you, this is different to how I normally create my material. It gives a different flavour, especially to the other instruments, though it took a while to transcribe my playing. It's as close as I can get without being too complicated.
Thank you very much. This is a field I really want to learn. Thank you for posting the assignments that I need to practice as a beginner learning jazz.
Thank you for your kind comments, please let me know if you have any ideas about other material I can post to help.
Muy buen el blues para saxo alto, me vino bien para aprender, ya que no tengo prof de saxo, todo por mi cuenta estoy aprendiendo por tutoriales
Thankyou so much for your feedback, I am so happy to help with these resources
Great, Great job !! PDF''s with your notes, descriptions and explanations would really be a MUST
Thank you for your good feedback. My brain is working on this issue 😁. I am working towards creating a Web site to host these resources.
Thank ~~ you
I found the task I need to overcome here today, and I will use it as my textbook. Thank you.
Thank you so much, This is the rhythm that I find most difficult and worst at.
Thx, looking forward to it!
The web sit with PDF's Will be very nice. Keep going man.. I realy apreciate your help. 🤜🤛
Good one , thank you 👍🏻
Thank you for your nice feedback.
dis is cool
Sehr gut❤
Thank you so much for your kind comment. Do you have any ideas for more material that I can create that would be useful for you? I'm always searching for inspiration 😁
Very nice.
That you so much
nice simon.
Thank you :-) I will work my way around more keys for the pentatonic phrases in the future, it is a nice open scale shape to use.
Thanks a lot... it's very helpful.
Thank you for your feedback. I will do more phrases in 12 key's, it just takes a while to put together inbetween my teaching my students. I'm torn between which to to next. Another 12 keys or Blues phrases. 😁
I like this lesson.
Thank you. Please let me know if you have any ideas of material I could create to help you.
