Viking Iceland: From Paganism to Christianity #iceland
Viking Iceland: From Paganism to Christianity
Despite bombastic titles you may encounter in the media about Iceland returning to paganism, most people at least in theory still belong to either the Lutheran church of Iceland or other Christian denominations. Heathenry has indeed become more popular, but mind you, we are not dealing with a revival, but rather with a modern tradition. How Iceland became Christian is a fascinating story of its own, and this is what we’ll be looking at today.
We find information about the Christian conversion of Iceland in several sources, such as the family and contemporary sagas, as well as Ari Thorgilsson’s Íslendigabók, annals or Church writings, special s...

Medieval Football Could Get You Killed - The game in England that we know as football likely emerged gradually during the Middle Ages. Still, there are few references to it from that time…and mostly because authorities wanted to ban it. But could football really get you killed? Unlike football today, medieval football had its share of violence. Watch this video to learn more about the origins a...
Runic Magic: Fact or Fiction? #runes #lecture

Fact or Fiction? Few alphabets have attracted so much attention, speculation and political misuse like the Nordic runes. But were they really more than a writing system? Unless, of course, you consider writing and reading itself as a kind of magic if you were living in the early Middle Ages, as also suggested by the famous myth about Odin sacrificing himself in order to gain knowledge. In this ...

The Íslendigabók really captures the vernacular of the day with such phrases (as per Chapter 7) as: "... as long as, well, essentially, no-one would snitch on them." 😄 - and I did enjoy the use of 'Heathenry', given its aural and morphological similarity to 'husbandry' elicits the image of tending to wee flocks of gambolling pagans. 😊

I'm a singe Norse Pagan female in North America, and I have to "screen" my potential partners who have those tattoos, I have thought I found like minded people just to find out that they are racist right winger no good doers. I myself have no tattoos and one of the reasons is when I was young and met people who had those symbols it was a coin toss as to their true beliefs. There are other reasons for not getting any tattoos, I don't like random people coming up and touching me. And many of my friends who have tattoos especially large back tattoos complain about them often.

Totally get u. I'm not a Pagan but a historian specialising in Norse culture and like wearing Mjöllnirs so I also tend to be very wary whenever anyone with loads of tattoos or "Norse" symbols on T-shirts approaches me.

Thanks for the video. It's a given your vids are always well done. Now I have to ask how the HEL do you talk that fast that long without breathing lol. You must have some good lungs. That's or your hitting the oxygen tank before you start. I'm just teasing you thats a good way to cram a lot of info in a short. Can you do a video specifically about rune enchantments on weapons? Have you heard of any on shields? I know those are pretty rare to find but I'm curious as I never heard of one. Thanks again

Heya!! Many thanks for the appreciation 😍 I did mention some empowering inscriptions in the longer lecture (livestreamed 2 days ago) on both swords (hilt or pommel) and knives or spears. Nothing on shiled as far as I'm aware of, probably because shields were not as prestigious as a sword. I'll probably do a follow-up for that lecture. If you're interested I did participate in a conference this year with a topic on magic swords and how they merge with the warrior in a form of ecology. I still have to write the article in the coming weeks. Yes, not a big fan of shorts myself :))) I just cut out the pauses with CapCut, that's all :))) Cheers!

A few points that were left with me: 1. I used to make swords & daggers (not a smith, more an artificer!) and have made saxes big and small. As a consequence, I noticed the width of the tang where it meets the body of the blade (I mean, doesn't everyone?) and found that the apparent lack of differentiation there indicated a certain form of handle/grip which was more prevalent (in my reading & studying of extant pieces) in 'knives' rather than 'swords'. 2. Was this the piece also known as the Seax of Beagnoth? (entschuldigen Sie, ich war zu dem Zeitpunkt ziemlich müde). 3. Because I was so tired, in handling das Handy, I occasionally swiped across the screen with my thumb, either changing Apps entirely, or changing channels/posts in RUclips. On one of the latter occasions, I found myself watching a Pentecostal sermon from what looked like a Rock'n'Roll band. Whilst I didn't watch it for long, I was taken by the similarities between the practices of form/liturgy and the presentation of internal codes well known and accepted by their adherents of the Pentecostals and what you were describing in the different uses of the runes, their formulae and the implicit knowledge(s) required/assumed of that time. (Sind die Leute nicht interessant?) 😄

Yeah, what is unclear is how many people would have actually been aware of the codes and meanings of the scrambled words. Being a rune carver at the time would have definitely been a power to behold.
