HOMOCHITTO NATIONAL FOREST/SW MISSISSIPPI OVERNIGHT CAMP
Good to see you putting out more videos. Hoping to eventually connect with you on a dispersed camp gathering sometime when things finally cool off a bit. Maybe when you take on the Desoto NF, you could attempt to gather some of us that are interested to join you. That'd be great, if you're up for it. I'm a solo backpacker, but I'm always looking for someone else willing to wild camp. Please keep it up.
Thanks Kenny, sounds good! Let's do it Bro! 👌👍💪👊😊
I'm really enjoying the report. Great information. Where is a good place to get a physical copy of a Topo map of Homochitto NF? I can't find one online.
You can purchase one online or buy at the Ranger District office. www.fs.usda.gov/detail/mississippi/home/?cid=STELPRDB5209225
Now I want an Egg Sammich. Good video.
Thanks Bro!
Looking for info about camping in there but can't seem to find much online. Looks fun though.
I'll definitely be back in MS! Will do!
If you ever get back towards MS for a weekend overnight camp, hit me up. Maybe I could join you
Problem with the term wild camping, is that too many use the term "stealth camping" instead and it's way overused (and confused) in media these days. When I think "stealth camping" I think of camping in a place where camping is not necessarily "allowed". When I think of Wild or Dispersed camping, I think of what you are doing now. But if you want RUclips views or Facebook likes, call it "Stealth camping" and see what happens. We still need to get together for a camp-out. Im doing a lot of primitive camping at some park in MS. Problem with wild camping in SE MS, is the main area to do it, is Desoto National Forest. Too many "unfriendlies" (AKA meth-heads, meth labs & drunks) out there for me to leave my vehicle left on the side of the road overnight. And its a pain to have someone drop you off and pick you up... So that's why I'm primitive car camping at the state parks.
Thanks for the comments! Yes, we should get together for a Wild Camp Overnight Soon. Not going down the "Stealth" Camping road.
👍
Love the content! Can’t wait to see more!
Thanks for Subbing! Much appreciated! 👌👊💪
Do you sweat and therefore get wet when wearing it
If it's hot out, yes.
@@ScottOwens28 but you wouldn't be wearing it if it was hot would you
No.
@@WILDCAMPSOUTH so do you sweat and get wet on the inside
@@kimpunter5299 not too bad no. I'm always camping in cooler weather.. I like to bring a smaller tarp in the summer and if it rains, I set up the tarp and wait out the rain. No need to wear hot rain cover...
You guys are funny? You wanna go out in the woods and sleep under a hanky? Or a banana
This is where I hunt at and my grandpa hunted for 30+ years
Outstanding! It's beautiful back in there.
not for any money....he's crazy.camping out there...cottonmouth an many other poisionus snakes....
in that thick semi-tall grass perfect coverage for snakes .......
Man if that don't sound like my luck. Shows how quickly things can snowball, and you have no idea if you're out of communication range. Seems like they should have tried calling your name once they knew it. Scott sounds a lot different than hey or yo. Lol. I always camp armed, but if I felt strangers were up to no good, I would just lay low also to avoid trouble. Great idea on the data window sheet.
Never n a million years would we have thought someone was concerned, It was a learning experience for sure! Thanks for the comment!
Hey! What’s the app to use to see the edge of the WMA?
I'm using OnX Hunt Maps.
It looks like you're highlighting the LA swamp areas and history like my son and I do with New England. There is definitely a lot of history in our 2 areas of the country, for sure. Interesting stuff and good video! I gave a subscribe in support of other small channels like mine with my son 👍
Outstanding, thanks so much! I'll check out & Sub to your Channel as well. We have a ball with our Wild Camp Adventures.
Great video sir. Your camera clarity is amazing. I'm glad to find someone doing this in our area! Thanks
Much appreciated David! Check out my website at www.campterra.us
@@WILDCAMPSOUTH will do
I missed this when it was live, but I am very interested. I want to wildcamp but the most intimidating part is finding where to go. Definitely will be following this further. I found the Facebook page a week or so ago.
Love the new look!
Cotton ball tip was really cool 💪🏽
Long time viewer brother! How can I message you about trips and tips?
Found you on Facebook!!! I’ve never commented in man but I take so many of your tips out on the trail with me

@@WILDCAMPSOUTH thank you for responding! I just got back from a father son overnight trip to Homochitto National Forest on my way to watch a college basketball game in Monroe. FREE SATELLITE COMMUNICATOR ALTERNATIVE & STORY ON WHY...
Scott, question: how much water do you bring for an overnighter like this? Do you filter any from the creek or pack it all in?
Usually I bring about 96 ounces - I usually have enough for a day, night, moring including coffee, drinking water & some left over to put out any small fire. This year, the drought has affected many of my watering holes etc. Many of the creeks, streams & branches in the Homochitto NF are bone dry, Without an adequate water source currently, I hump in all my water. Thanks for the response.
@@WILDCAMPSOUTH Looking to make a similar overnight camp to this one real soon. Thanks for the reply!
@@trentcavalier9237 Are you aware of the CAMPTERRA Website? Also check out the LAMS Wild Camp Alliance FB Group of local to LA & MS.
@@WILDCAMPSOUTH Thanks so much, I will check them out
Where did you find the rule about being allowed to camp within 30 Yrds of river? I can’t find it and the rangers told me it’s not allowed.
You must find the USFW Regs PDF Pamphlet - usually you may get one, if you are lucky at a designated area on site. Also, this is just a "Day Scout/Recon," I did not camp here overnight. Thanks
Love the Homochitto! Fantastic spots everywhere there. Dispersed camping unlimited.
This is a great video Scott! Very detailed and informative. Thanks for taking the time to explain the app usage. I think just about anyone with basic outdoor skills and the drive to go explore can be successful using your reports and these instructions. With a few successful trips under their belts they could probably even find new sites using these skills and a couple maps. Thanks for taking the time to produce this.
Thanks so much Al! 👌👍💪😊

WILD CAMP SERVICES REPORT | GETTING STARTED IN WILD CAMPING!
We used to have a Southern Outdoors Rendezvous Gathering in the fall in the middle part of MS. It was very low-key, just a bunch of (somewhat) like minded people camping a 4 day weekend at a state park. Unfortunately, it dispersed when people got "too big for it" (for a lack of better terms), amongst a few other reasons I'm not going to mention in public. I enjoyed the group camping every now and then. I like getting out in nature and backpacking. Suggestion: Move your show to another day or maybe an hour earlier. Blackie typically has a live show on Thursdays from 7 to 9. Choosing another time/day may get more traction with the show.
Thanks for the comment! How is a Wednesday evening? I'm toying with all that right now... Fridays would be ok, but folks usually have plans for the weekend... Thanks & come join us on one of the Live Stream Shows. I'm "subbed" to you as well!
@@WILDCAMPSOUTH Wednesdays would be a very good option. Thanks for the sub. Hoping to get some camping videos up soon once the weather cools off
Great video, I enjoyed that. I also have a weird love for spam. I say weird because I don’t care much for machine made meat, yet I have a weakness for spam. I like it best fried with fried ramen noodles and vegetables
Just got my haven xl in the mail a few days ago. Noticed the single zipper pull and decided I would try to add another. Got online and ordered #8 ykk double pulls and successfully added an opposing pull to each side. Can't wait to try it out. Think I will love this hammock and the flat lay. Thanks for the discussion.
Outstanding! Would like to see that!
Good to hear your experience, going to pick one up tomorrow, just trying to decide between green or camo, leaning towards green.
Thank´s for showing! I´ve seen once either the French or Brits, I´m not sure, they have had these kind of big loops at the Shoulderstraps.
Very Good. A fair and detailed review.....with a focus on what kind of outdoor activity this system is suitable for. Its not a system for Ultramarathon participants to carry, or an ultralight minimalist backpacker.....you don't have to own one to know that its too heavy for that kind of activity in its current format. The Haven system seems to be the nearest thing you'll get to your own level bed, whilst being able to sleep in the outdoors, not spending a fortune, simple to setup and remaining reasonable mobile on foot.....although, it seems like a great option if your camping from a car or motorbike as well. I've done my fair share of back pack tent camping, bivy'ing, tarping, car camping and hammocking and haven't slept particularly well while using any of these variations. The Haven seems to (in theory) provide a great sleep solution to most of the issues that I've experienced. When's it coming to the UK?
Thanks so much & you are correct on many levels. Not sure when it's coming to the UK.
Haven XL or the original haven which ever you use I just don’t think it can be beat !!
Greetings Freon Russia
Love the review! Thanks for taking the time. I always pair my tree straps with whoopie slings. That makes a huge difference and you won’t have to worry about your knots 😂 Excited for the next adventure!
Great overview, thank you. Just got my Haven XL and am looking forward to taking it to the back country or maybe eagle rock loop to try it out. Am making some changes to the suspension with addition of woopie slings and will be taking the dyneema tarp in place of the Haven rain fly. All in all, am excited for this trip with the Haven tent!
Why that tarp over rain fly ? Curious
I’m camping about 50 miles north of where you were for this trip. Come by and see me if you get a chance.
Next time I will! 👌
HAVEN XL TENT OVERVIEW - IT'S ALL ABOUT YOUR SLEEPABILITY!
I feel ya 125%... My daughter is 11 and watches anime (shit). I've never been turkey hunting. But I can kill the mess out of some squirrels! We go up to the MS River Delta Swamp in MS (just across from Arkansas) and hunt & camp for 5 or so days. Great way to relax and reset seeing we're 45mins from any "town."
Outstanding! We should "Cross Platform" meet up and do videos together of a weekend or overnighter sometime.
Looks like ya'll had a good time. I didn't go to any Mardi Gras parades either. Vermiculite or perlite is what's in his alcohol stove. Pretty sure you can find it at Lowe's. I was wondering how that shelter would do in the rain. May have to drop it down more for more rain protection.
Many thanks for the info. Yes, if I would have dropped d it down some, it would have been fine. I didn't think it would rain. Rain came in right about 6:45am... It's a nice light weight kit. Thanks again!
Hey you sleep in an open poncho shelter you might have Sasquatch come snuggle up with you in the middle of the night.
That just might be the exact plan! 👌👍💪😁
* BOGUE CHITTO NWR OVERNIGHTER - SBJ RAILHAULER PAC Taken directly from: www.fws.gov/refuge/bogue-chitto/visit-us/activities/camping Camping Primitive camping is permitted within 100 feet of designated streams. This includes either bank of the Bogue Chitto River, Wilson Slough, West Pearl River south of Wilson Slough, and Refuge lands along the East Pearl River and Holmes Bayou. No campsite can be left unattended longer than 24 hours. Campsites cannot be established longer than 14 consecutive days. Campers must mark their campsite with the owner’s name, address, phone number, and dates of occupancy in a conspicuous location at the front of the tents. The Refuge is closed to camping when the Pearl River reaches 15.5 feet on the gauge at Pearl River.
I found you on Louisiana Tent Camping site @ Facebook... I live in south (eastern)??? Louisiana.. South of Lafayette. I have not done to much camping lately except out of the back of my pickup. My knee has gone out on me so very hard for me to walk anywhere, but I still get my grandsons and take them down by a pond and do a couple nights now and then. Thank you for taking the time to do this.
Outstanding, thanks for the Sub! I too have physical ailments, but get out as often as I can. You have private areas to camp?
@@WILDCAMPSOUTH It is my daughters back yard next to their pond, but not very private unless the sugar cane is over 5 feet tall.. lol. No trees and I love getting in the woods and camping. 6 yrs ago I was hauling oilfield valves to Ohio, W. Virgina and stopping at my cousin's in Tennessee on my way home. We did the Tennessee Buffalo river for a week two years in a row and we did some stealth camping at Sewanee University of the South at the top of Monteagle Tenn. They allow day hikes but we slipped off in the woods and stayed there 4 days, it is a beautiful site, it is almost a Butte. Like someone shaved off the top of a mountain and it was about 4 or 5 miles across with some sheer cliffs on all 3 sides. Buffalo River in Tennessee is one of the only rivers in the state that flows from South to North (It starts south of Hoenwald Tn and empties into the Duck River just before the Duck river empties into the Tennessee River.)
@@larryhutchinson4271 Understood! That place sounds amazing.
Enjoyed breakfast and coffee with you Scott. Congrats on 100+ subs! See you in da woods!!
Thanks Al for the kind words my friend!
It's good to see you posting again. That's an interesting looking set up from One Tigris. As for instant coffees, I'm still hooked on Community special dark roast. I just can't get away from Community coffee.
Thanks Claude! Actually, out of all the instant coffee I've tried, Community is the best so far..
I've looked at that poncho shelter a few times. I just can't wear a poncho for some reason; I'll get past it sometime. I have the Onetigris Backwoods Bungalow 1.0 and love it. I only wish it'd pack down just a bit smaller for long hikes. When we meet up, remind me to bring you the instant Thai coffee I'm drinking regularly now. Are you going to Blackie's gathering in April?? I'm trying to make it there on Thursday afternoon hopefully.
Would love to go to Blackies, but I have been drawn for a Turkey Lottery Hunt in southwest Louisiana at one of the WMAs so I'm going to make it a wild camp turkey hunting trip out there late March early April. Where r u from again?

I have the Klymit seat, pillow & Static V2 mattress. Keep an eye out, next month they'll probably do their pillow next. It's better then the OutdoorVitals one they give away. I highly recommend the Klymit products.
As soon as the weather stabilizes, I'm hoping to get back out there. But like you said, life gets in the way. Hopefully we'll get together then for a camp out. Desoto is a good spot. We hiked and camped there before. Plenty of wild camping area there.
