I started this channel so that I could create a Dmitri Hvorostovsky playlist. I only discovered Dmitri Hvorostovsky after he had died, because after I had been ‘out of touch’ with opera since 1987, Cardiff Singer of the World dedicated its Audience Prize in 2019 to this Dmitri guy who I had never heard of! Suddenly I wanted to hear everything I could that he ever sang! (And to not hear the slushy lounge music that he did with Krutoi, so I compiled a Deja-Vu less playlist).He was one of those bright shining meteors that occasionally burst into our sky, then burn themselves out as they descend to earth. I spent quite a bit of my life singing opera, both amateur and professional, and it is his opera credentials that first appealed to me, but there’s no denying that he was seriously easy on the eye, too!

Dmitri Hvorostovsky: Richard Strauss "Allerseelen" Carnegie Hall 2016
A concert very late in his too short career, he is pale and looks tired but is in very good voice. This an amateur video and the visuals are all over the place, but the sound is good though distant. He rarely rarely sang German repertoire and I haven't yet come across any other recordings of this particular song, which I love - but he sang it so well. He seemed to be moving in a new direction with his repertoire towards the end - he had recorded Lizst's Petrarch sonnets, he had realised an ambition to bring Rubenstein's Demon to a wider audience, and he commenced this Carnegie Hall concert with a group of Strauss songs, including Allerseelen.

@@lydiasimon8415 this translates as "if you listen a very bad sound is heard" - not so. The sound quality is not brilliant but it is not bad either. Sometimes, you have to make do with what you have, and I don't think there are any other recordings of performances of this song, We have to be grateful that amateur phone photographers recorded these concerts, whether we like the sound or not,
