I have 5 children. None of who I expect to care for me when that time comes. Here in Canada we can opt for MAID. Caring for someone is really hard, mentally and physically taxing. You put your life and sanity on hold. I've been cooking and cleaning and caring for people for over 50 years.. Sigh.......

It does not consider the stress of having the responsibility. I cared at home and it was only me and a CNA but I never could escape care giving and it wore on my mental health. Some times a home is what a caregivers mental health needs. Don’t feel guilty if you need the space from caregiving.

My ex is suffering from dementia at 73. My daughter and her special needs son live with me, just the three of us, and every time I forget to turn something off, or can't find my keys, or have to search a little to remember a name or an infrequently used word, I can see that look on her face that seems to ssy, "not you too." I am so tempted when she forgets to turn something off or can't find something to roll my eyes and say, "uhoh." No, I seriously do not worry about me having dementia, but I will be 75 this year and have normal moments of inattention, maybe daydreaming, maybe preferring my own company. I would like to ask everyone making tbese invaluable videos helping family members to recognize warning signs that they need to remember these can be signs of normal aging, unless they become extreme. Tracking your older parent's every mistake and judging them constantly is not only annoying to them. It is demoralizing and ultimately harmful to their confidence, self esteem, and self worth.

A surefire sign of declining cognitive function is incontinence, especially at night. The mentally confused person may forget how to navigate efficiently to the nearest toilet. Be prepared to do lots more laundry if you are caring for an elderly person who is cognitively compromised. 🧺
