Dia Kline, Congenital Anosmic, at the NIH Inaugural Seminar for the Smell and Taste Clinic
Dia Kline, Congenital Anosmic, Public Speaker, Actor, Comedian, and Disability Advocate.
I had the honor of speaking at the inaugural seminar for the Smell and Taste Clinic at the NIH in Bethesda, MD, led by Drs. Joshua Levy & Paule Valery Joseph. This event brought together a diverse and distinguished group of leading experts, doctors, and scientists working in the field of anosmia. As an educator, ambassador, entertainer, and disability advocate for congenital anosmia (born without the ability to smell), I was invited to share my personal experiences, insights, and perspectives on congenital anosmia, a condition that is rarely represented in discussions about anosmia.

Okay, I found my people. I'm 57 years old and have never been able to smell! My family is amazed and test me all the time. Can you smell this? Can you smell that? HaHa that's amazing that you can't. Well, now I want an official diagnosis to find out if it's all in my head! I've always wondered why I can't smell farts and lemons and all that stuff. Thanks for the fun video.

@@diakline I've always wondered if I can smell but just don't recognize what a smell is if that makes sense. I'll be contacting an ENT today! I had numerous sinus infections as a child and sinus surgery in my teens. But, I don't EVER remember being able to sense smells. I would love to find out definitively what's the cause.

@@dough.1355Make sure you know what to ask for and push for what you need. Your ENT will more than likely pushback. Protocol is an UPSIT scratch and sniff test, steroids (I suggest saying no), a nasal scope (not fun), an MRI (a CAT scan would come later if needed) and an official written diagnosis in your medical chart.

@csworth --I’ve never been diagnosed. My congenital anosmia became evident when I was a small child, but in a family that had an asthmatic, a severe allergy sufferer, a gunshot victim, and facial trauma thanks to a kicking burro, my anosmia just didn’t seem to be much of a problem on the scale of things. By the time I got older and started mentioning it to doctors, I’d already made enough adjustments so that it was not a significant hindrance. No doctor ever recommended testing it, nor suggested any remedy, and only one or two even made an official note of it. I’m *not* minimizing the experience of anyone else who has congenital anosmia, but just illustrating that such experiences vary. By the way, I love peanut butter. An ex-neighbor was a lawyer and an alcoholic, and he'd stash a bottle of the hard stuff in one drawer of his desk, and a jar of peanut butter in another. He'd swallow of big spoonful of peanut butter right before meeting a client, to mask the scent of the alcohol. With a client like you or me, he could have saved the trouble, eh?

They called the almond and maybe the oat 'milk' because it was a means to replace animal milk during Lent. They don't call it juice because it's not juice. It's just the stuff ground up really, really fine and left to soak in water until the powder got soft and kind of creamy. Except the coconut milk, that's a little closer to juice.

This really hits home close. As a congenital anosmic, I had been in a fire and exposed to an overnight gas leak. I was so close to lose my life in both situations. When I finally saw the smoke coming in to my unit, it was already too late. I was lucky that the design/layout of the apartment let me escape the apartment from the other end. My unit was engulfed by the smoke in a matter of seconds. I was the last one escaping from the apartment complex. In another occasion, were not my roommate who rushed in warning me that he smelled very strong gas leaking, I would have had turned on the fan. In another occasion, my roommate run into the kitchen, telling me that her food was burning. I literally sit inside the kitchen without knowing what had happened. Who said smell isn't key to human's safety and survival?

Thank you for sharing your story with me. Check out Fifth Sense UK and theSTANA.og They can help with resources and education for your acquired anosmia. I hope you do become an advocate for invisible disabilities. Educating just one person will create a ripple effect. I hope your healing trajectory is fast and full.

Muahaha, as a congenital anosmic, I believe I will totally have the same reactions as you did in this video. Actually I did that with durian, while all of my friends went 10 feet away from me.

It’s always nice to meet another congenital anosmic. You should definitely take the opportunity to eat Surströmming when it comes up. Your friends will probably move 20 feet away this time! I did a durian taste test too. Check it out: ruclips.net/video/No5BwWcBieo/видео.html

This is hilarious, your personality is A+. I'm a lifelong anosmic, but not congenital like you. Unfortunately, as a newborn baby, I was exposed to intensive second hand smoke in a small NYC apartment up until around 6 years of my life. This destroyed my olfactory nerves. It really does affect our lives. We suffer from depression more than other people do. And god forbid the dread in social situations.. worrying about body odor or something else! Do you equate hot ambient temperature with possible body odor, and cold = okay body odor? Ahh, how mistaken that has turned out to be.

It’s always nice to meet another anosmic. Thank you for sharing your story ❤️ Yes, I would totally equate cold as having less/ok odors and hot as having possible odors. I’m sure I’ve been mistaken too!

I just listened to your interview on CPR. It was so interesting! I just HAVE to know, did you put a smoke alarm in your kitchen after the incident with your cat warning you something was on fire?

    • @diakline
      @diakline 3 года назад

I’m so glad you listened! Thank you. I had a smoke detector in my kitchen all 4 times!! It goes to show you how long it can take for smoke to trigger the alarm. Cats are a much better warning system!! 😉 Here’s the link for everyone: www.cpr.org/2021/03/03/dia-kline-anosmic-nose-blindness-interview/

"When did you discover you aren't normal?" lol Maybe the person who discovered Durian was anosmic. Maybe anosmics are responsible for discovering a lot of things from which we all benefit. Disability or ability: it's all a matter of perspective!

      Right?!!! Perspective! I was 4 when I discovered I wasn’t normal. Maybe I should’ve become an anthropologist 🤔

I wish I could get an mri of my brain. I have congenital anosmia as well as other issues that I would love to see if were caused by structural issues. Insurance says no because it won’t lead to treatment

I would love to see more CA’s get an official diagnosis! Maybe you should come up with some creative reasons why your doctor needs to do tests. Or find another ENT that is interested in diagnosing you. If they don’t know the reason, you don’t t know it can’t be fixed!!

Love the analogy to the crayons for the taste/smell thing. Went to a doctor once for something unrelated. She has an intern sitting in. I mentioned that I had no sense of smell. She immediately used the teaching moment to inform the intern “that means he can’t taste”!!! I said NO. Wrong. I almost yelled it. Frustrating how doctors have no sense of sense of smell. Once asked a different doctor about it and he looked in my nose and said, “huh...”. I said “huh, what???” No answer.

Thank you! I’ve been using the crayon analogy for decades because it so simple and relatable. I’m glad you like it too. Your experience with your doctor is sadly all to common. Here’s to greater awareness and education in the medical field, not just the public sector.
