How to Make a Minimal Desktop With Guix and Sway
Guix Config:
gitlab.com/rolas978/guix-sway.git
Guix Manual:

Very little links in this video, surprisingly. Most everything in this video is stuff that I recorded or came up with, sweetness. This took a while to make, I first had trouble shoot a lot of different config files before I finally got something that booted up. Then, I had to figure out why the keyboard shortcuts weren't working. I realized that I needed the config file, found it, and badda bing badda boom, it worked. Hope this helps.

The first of a few mods I intend on doing for this headphone. The next few lined up are going to be a bit more complicated, but also more fun, so stay tuned. There was a large portion of the video talking about the keyboard that I edited out (it was boring), so I'll take the time to talk about it here: It's a mechanical keyboard with cherry mx black switches. The key press is a little shallow, which I forgive since the main point of using the black switches is durability. I've found a lot of industrial keyboards use black switches because of that. T...

I just learned I could do this about 5 minutes ago and decided to entertain myself. I wasn't aware that Debian/Devuan had this included with a base install. I found my self rather entertained that the idea I could just respond "I'm doing fine thanks" to anyone that asked me how I was doing. For those curious, the way this is done is by entering "spd-say" into the terminal, followed by whatever ...

This is the 15" Thinkpad T60 with intel graphics. The original display was replaced, along with the inverter board. I was hoping to get the QXGA display, but the libreboot website noted that there are some issues with it. I wanted to stay safe so here we are. Inverter Board: P/N 41W1338 A few other notes: -Keyboard could probably be replaced, I feel like the keys have gone a little mushy with t...

Do you turn on the laptop when flashing libreboot
no
Are you still here right
Thank you for the video, I just got it working and definitely couldn’t have done it without this video.
Stop it
Thank you for the video. Is it possible to read novels or books on Ti 84? Thank you
I still have the Sony GX10 ES and I agree you can fry an egg on the top of this. My solution was an audio fan from ACIfinity.com. I also have another one on top of my Denon 3700H avr that also can fry an egg.
Do you still have this Sony receiver??
i pluged it in as my computer was booting and it tried to boot to the calculator
Great, well built receiver 👍🏻
thx for the review :)
comfy to watch
Hello, after 3 years, is it still relevant ? Thanks.
@TempCrap-nn4cm hello, can you send in a pull request please i am revisiting my config file lately, please look at latest commits
this video really helped, thanks
Hey men, do you know any store, where I could buy that? Searching for a while but haven't found yet
What model is the screen? Where did you find it?
Yo tengo un thinkpad t60 pero con un procesador de32 bits. El suyo es de 64?
Si, pero puedes usar el config con su procesador. Solomente usais Guix por i686
Sony is really good at everything electronic
Thanks for your tutorial👌👌, I now have my first librebooted computer, yay!. Worked perfectly and I didn't had to specify the chip name. I used the 2016 utility you used in the video with the 2023 libreboot bios file. The hardest part was installing the soic16 clip, I had to redo my install 5 times to make it work because I didnt want to spend 15$ on a clip and bought the cheap one
Good job. Thank you.
oh brother where art thou
If I were to do another video, what would you want to see?
Awesome! Love Guix! Probably the best linux distro as of now
♥️
Can you connect a usb keyboard to it?
Sony Audio Video Receiver Model STR GX9 ES A very good quality, nice looking high end hi fi Receiver by Sony of Japan. A robust Receiver which gives a very high power output of 130 Watts per channel. Also its very heavy at 18.5 kgs. This was a 1988 model. These details are according to the internet information. I wish I have this Sony Receiver.
wow that's huge
damn, lucky. when i got lays last time they didn’t even give me the bag!
Only if the video's resolution was higher...
Two things you can do to make a T60 running linux really sweet and fast are 1) install ZRAM and modify the setting to us lz4 compression and set the ram at 2 1/2 times the physical RAM. You will want to completely disable physical swap (on hard drive or SSD). 2) install ananicy which is a nice priority manager. You will also want to tweak the swappiness settings. There are also some extensions for Firefox and Chrome that discard inactive tabs to keep memory usage low. If anyone is interested in learning more about how to do these things, message me and I'll be happy to help. Frankly, I use a T400s running Mint w/ Cinnamon desktop as well as a couple of T60s with external monitors running Fedora Cinnamon Spin at home and they all work as well for everything I need as a windows 11 2022 edition of an E11 i5 thinkpad that I use for work. I use the enhanced-h264ify plugin to help keep RUclips videos smooth. The T400s is especially smooth. And this is with the most recent standard stock BIOS for each machine. I'm sure they would do even better with Libreboot. Can Libreboot be installed without tearing the machines apart?
thank you, beloved. I tried looking up "yms song with whistling" but apparently there's more than one.
anyone reading this please reply so i can comeback someday thanks in advance :)
aww man what if i have the 1.03 boot code? can i downgrade that?
The comment about “junky piece of crap” and the lies you told about power draw was the signal to stop watching.
I've had these headphones for 40 years and never realised how easily the ear pads come off!
Personally, I like the partially coiled cable. 1.) I normally hate coiled cables. They will pull anything not secured before the fully stretch, and they will pull anything away from you if you aren't holding it, and it has too much tension. Then they almost always get kinked and knotted. Last, they are usually perceived heavier because all the weight is more condensed. 2.) Cables that are 6 ft long are a PITA to deal with for normal desktop operations. They take alot of space, and can get snagged. The partial coil allows better flexibility with length, without having to worry about the spring action the coils have.
Can't you use cons* instead of append list?
Yes, thank you for mentioning that! I updated my config to use cons* now
it's all written in assembly, nice :)
the z80 is pretty cool
Congratulations! I just got my x200 librebooted too. However I could not set up wifi neither in Parabola nor Hyperbola i guess it is blocking out my original intel wifi card. What wifi card is recommended? Just any random Atheros wifi N card mini pci is fine? Thanks
You will want an atheros card supported by the ath9k driver. That's the one available on most libre distros. You can find info about different cards on hnode: h-node.org/wifi/catalogue/en Just sort by interface. Their part numbers start with AR9- Hope that helps
The screens were just different originally. I enjoy some repairs, upgrades, Linux experiments and multi boot experiments mostly with the fleet I have, broken or not from ebay. Such a nice product. It's not great now for everything.
Would doing a single-ended 3.5mm jack affect the sound quality of these? Have you noticed any sound degration by your cable mod?
Thank you for this guide, but what if I don't update the EC before flashing? I just flashed a T400 and the EC was on 1.01.
I suppose you can flash the previous, stock BIOS, then update to the latest EC, and then flash libreboot again...
Nice video, Now I want to try it.
The Front Side Bus on the T60 is not really fast enough for RUclips videos in HD. The 1066mhz FSB on the T400 and W500 overcome this limitation, providing speeds comparable to a Thinkpad T410 I5 system. As the T400 and W500 are better built than the T410 and later models, this is my choice of daily driver in mid 2021. Also, every T60 I owned has had issues slowing down after suspend resume. On Linux, of course.
how does the t60 with linux runs 720p videos?
It doesn’t. Yet the older the version of Firefox the more chance one had. My daily bed sitter was an X61. That only just does 720p. As we move forward it slowly fails even on that. I just upgraded it to an X230 for only that reason. Well, it also gets pretty hot doing 720p non stop :)
Nice. Tried Guix. Too raw for me for now. Using NixOS for a moment.
Wuau
Can you do the part of moving the sway config file to the .config location also inside the .scm file? I thought the whole point of the .scm file was to fully describe yout system, then install it and have it up and running?
Look at the project called "guix home". It will be soon merged in guix itself.
I'm curious also of why this isnt possible without guix home. I guess I'll find out before too long. Hopefully I remember to report back 🤔
@@neilbedwell7763did you
my t60 got bricked, do you think this guide (in terms of wiring and the chip) will be the same? i have a macronix chip too, 8 pin, just not sure if its the same thanks and nice video
You can get libreboot on a t60 without ever opening up the machine iirc. How did you brick it? I'm a bit confused
@@ProperlyPsychotic I already fixed it. you can brick it by forcing a kernel flag instead of adding it to grub and restarting
@@Artixou Ah, how did you fix it if you don't mind explaining?
@@ProperlyPsychotic By diassembling it down to the motherboard and flashing the chip
Gypaetus Barbatus good shit. is 4GB ram and SSD enough for Kali linux and for using firefox? can u even watch videos normally?
Yes, though you'd have to be mindful of what kind of desktop you're using. Gnome would be too heavy, so something like lxqt or i3 would be better. Use the netinstaller for that. For watching videos, yes, you can watch videos. Don't use wayland though, since it tends to be pretty gpu heavy (x11 doesn't have this problem). Then, pipe all the videos you want to watch through youtube-dl and mpv. There's an add-on for firefox that does that by simply right clicking the video and selecting the option (it requires some configuring to work properly).
I really want a laptop or desktop with a FSF approved distro, but I also really want to be able to get work done, also try Parabola.
Amazing video quality & info
