When told to "be yourself," a modern person often scrambles to select the "right" version of themselves.
Typically, they waver between two masks:
The Social Self: a construct shaped by society, where one adopts expected behaviors to avoid reproach.
The Invented Self: a mask of rebellion. In defiance of expectations, they perform the opposite, mistaking this for freedom and sincerity.
Yet, there remains a third, hidden option - the true Self, an authentic expression of one’s deeper nature.
But this Self lies buried deep, guarded by layers of subconscious restraint. For many, the fear lingers that freeing it would unleash a wild, untamed force within - a force so unpredictable (because it's an unknown as alien) that it seems safer to keep it chained.
Thus, people fear what they might become, for they do not truly know who they are.
