    Now here are my thoughts on the word metroidvania and why it is not good at all, not useful in any way: So. Metroidvania, a mixed bag of many things but mostly considered taking from Super Metroid (also Legend of Zelda in that regard) and Castlevania? Really? All Symphony of the Night did was taking its Castlevania household name and slapping it over an otherwise light hearted side scrolling RPG type of game. So we need to clarify a couple of things. First of all things to consider: The heck is a metroidvania? Given the idea that it all started with Symphony of the Night which is barely correct anyway, the problems start kicking in already. Even on the NES we had lots of side scrolling games with a strong emphasis on exploration AND platforming. We call those games action adventures. Nintendo even gave birth to their own adventure series on the NES, spanning four games in total. Other developers/companies liked that idea and followed accordingly. With success. Action adventues were the hype like classic platformers. But action adventures also existed as top-down view games like the first Zelda title. So we had top-down view and side scrolling action adventures. Metroid was the side scrolling title, the first Zelda the top-down view title. So far so easy. But we also had Kid Icarus, widely ignored by many since they can not sort in or out where to put that game and whether it is an actual adventure title. Yes it is. Action adventures were in an experimental state and Nintendo themselves gave us a bunch of them to figure it out. And we did figure it out and everything was groovy. But now we have to listen people saying metroidvania this and metroidvania that. It can not be unheard that most people have no idea what they talk about. Just take Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night side by side and you see the gap between those two games and how they couldn't be any more different than that. And ignore the fact that Nobody ever says Legend of Vania, since Legend of Zelda has more games out then the Metroid franchise, and the fact that the Legend of Zelda series had its second game on the NES out as a side scrolling action adventure as well. Just ignore that for now. Because what made people connect Metroid and Castlevania was the map in SotN similar to the one in Super Metroid. And that is not redeeming enough in my opinion to legitimate a word like metroidvania. Here is a list of most crucial aspects to consider: The platforming: Since Metroid started as a side scrolling game and has never changed to an overhead play style, it remains a series of action adventures. That element was only kinda there in SotN because the game itself presented itself in a typical side scrolling manner. But it is not challenging. It is just there because. In a 3D oriented game like those on the PS2 the shallowness couldn't hide itself any longer. Lament of Innocense and Curse of Darkness had me falling asleep. As you fight some enemies,kinda God of War style (but not really that exciting) you just walk around in empty rooms and hallways. In Lament of Innocense you sometimes use your whip to cross pits and stuff but not well implemented. Metroid Prime on the other hand kept me busy in 3D too. Everything felt right and had its place and use. And the platforming is only one difference yet. Vital in Metroid games, just a side note in SotN type Castlevania games. Igarashi acknowledged that and brought the platforming back with his Curse of the Moon games. That is platforming. The means of exploration: Now you could argue that you also explore your environment in SotN. But to what extent? Clash at Demonhead had more going on than SotN! And you are kinda exploring your levels in Super Mario World too, and that game does a better job. In these RPG style Castlevania games you only explore to grind for stuff if you want or to see the "better" ending, as you can finish those games without even trying. Metroid begs your pardon if you try this lazy walkthrough style. SotN and those games don't compare to Metroid games in that regard. The point is that every item you can find in a Metroid game has its place and helps you along your path. SotN style games offer many items to grind for but 99% of them are useless trash and filler only. Here is the thing. I played Harmony of dissonance a couple of days ago, still love that game. But I didn't need every sub weapon spell book combo. I only used one sub weapon, the freaking axe, and on top of that only kept switching between the ice and fire books. In Super Metroid every weapon has a function on its own before you have them combined. Even in Metroid Prime they kinda got it right. What do you want with hundreds of sword types in SotN? All you do is swing the shield rod while also having the Alucard Shield equipped and boom. You win the game. In Metroid even the weapons are vital to open certain doors, are a part of the puzzle solving. In SotN you may need three or four items in total to make it to the end. And even for the good ending, once you know what you need, you never go for everything else. The grinding: This element never existed in Metroid Prime alas you are low on health and the next save station is too far off, so you were grinding for health orbs. But you won't grind that many times for energy before you know how to play properly. In SotN and such games it is there. Even though not even mandatory. Can you imagine that? In some games you might grind for specific items or souls to get the "real ending". And that is lame in many ways. While you can ditch the grinding altogether if you want, why does it even exist? 100%ing a SotN game doesn't do anything for me as a gamer nor the character in the game itself. In a Metroid game getting the items buffs your character and makes the game easier the more you go for it. The boss fights: I thought about it and I think this needs to be mentioned too. As I played Harmony of Dissonance I figured you can completely ignore some boss fights and walk past their rooms entirely. In a Metroid game bosses are important. They are guardians. Even in the first Metroid you had to find the two mini bosses to open the pathway to the final section and to boost your missile count. They meant something. No matter in what order you took them. But in those SotN games most bosses are just there or just blocking your path and are nothing more but a wall you need to remove. They have no deeper connection to anything, not even the story itself. Except Death maybe? I don't know since he is a pushover most of the time. Even Super Metroid put the meaning of the bosses way up compared to Metroid. There they are plot devices and gate keepers. Remember when you tried to take the Bomb item in Super Metroid? Nothing like that in any sotN game. Just saying. So what now? What do these metroidvania fans really want to play? A real challenging game of exploration where items and boss fights mean something? Where exploration feels like an adventure? Or these light hearted RPGs with little to no platforming challenges and mostly useless grindfests? You can not have both. Most games being successful action adventure titles are most likely like Metroid or Legend of Zelda in that regard. The only Castlevania game that holds a candle to the Metroid series is Castlevania II on the NES and even that was kinda there. That is why I prefer classic Castlevania games over those light RPG games. So now you know why these metroidvania fans must leave the grounds. They do not know whether they like football or basketball more. But they try to play both games at the same time. And that is why most developers trying to cater to metroidvania fans will never satisfy anyone, except those developers who know how a proper action adventure works. But only few really do understand the concept behind Super Metroid or Metroid Prime or any Legend of Zelda game. And only few developer know how to properly infuse some RPG elements into that type of game. I know some titles I enjoy that are good side scrolling action RPG adventure type games. Great genre mashups. But I never see them in those typical Metroidvania lists. But we know why. Take Shovel Knight for another example. This plays more like Duck Tales on the NES. And even Duck Tales 2 (also NES) could boats very few very light hearted adventure elements. But it remains a classic platformer out of all things. And so does Shovel Knight. Shovel Knight doesn't even resemble anything close to remind me of classic NES Metroid. Shovel Knight also doesn't remind me of a classic Castlevania NES title either. But people list is as a metroidvania? Metroidvania is just a modern buzz word for lazy games journalists and reviewers. Those who do not think twice before they write an article or post a video. The word might no go anywhere. But not because it is good. But because people are lazy and don't give a duck. And that can't be good.

    In my neighborhood there is a small chain of fast food bakeries that may sell a honey cheese bun, but each store may have a different specialty. The furthest one sells a three part bun with cheese and garlic, ham and egg, and butter onion. No boy band endorsement yet. Maybe the Doughboys could do it next time they visit.

    Hey, man! It's been awhile. I totally understand where you're coming from on this. I think it got a little better for me since my separation and pending divorce because I realized I had put all my mental eggs in one basket and then she went off and smashed all of them. So I started opening up more to coworkers and casual aquaintances and letting them in a little more. This, of course, blew up in my face multiple times, but it has also been very rewarding. It's probably a fine line of finding the people who actually care and only letting them in. Maybe you should try letting a couple people that are close to you, proximity-wise, get closer to you emotionally. Your boss obviously cares about your thoughts and feelings if she opened up to you about her personal problem. That could be a sign that she would be a good person to let in, just a little bit at least. Anyway, just a thought. I hope you feel less lonely soon. Loneliness is definitely my biggest struggle right now as well.

    • @feitclub
      @feitclub 5 лет назад

      I have definitely tried the opening up part, but so far no one seems willing to meet me halfway in that department. That doesn't mean I'll stop trying, but it's been a lot of one-way emotions for me in recent years.
