RadFi Review: The Minolta Maxxum 7000
A Radical Fidelity review of the Minolta Maxxum 7000 film SLR. Released in 1985, this camera was the defining moment in Minolta's golden years, before they cried uncle to Nikon and Canon.

A Radical Fidelity review of the Nikon FG film SLR. Released in 1982, this camera was the D500 of its day.
RadFi Review: The Pentax P30t
Просмотров 12 тыс.4 года назад
A Radical Fidelity review of the Pentax P30t film SLR. Manufactured from 1990 through 1997, this was one of the very last manual-focus Pentax SLR's. Brief clips from Jared Polin and Grainydays appear within this video. Jared Polin: ruclips.net/user/JaredPolin Grainydays: ruclips.net/channel/UCx4MHIcTdwdcmJ5accSDlPA
I just bought this Nikon FG , at my Value Village today ... I couldn't pass it up for $ 9.99 ... with the lens and aftermarket clip-on strap 50mm 1.8 f lens I would say this is an oddball model with the add-on fake little grip for your fingers? , Why add it and the didn't have the swivel stap anchors there made out of cheap plastic ... is this camera in between the Nikon F3 in the Nikon F4 .... which I have ... what was Nikon thinking istnt this between F2 and F3 ... up the game .. Nikon came out with a Nikon F5 after the F4 ..then made a cheaper version just as good cheaper to buy and made a Nikon F - 75 took the same quality pictures ... as Nikon F5 ... every way but I would say anything past Nikon 3 ..To Nikon F 4 , 5 , 6 , .... I don't know what Nikon was thinking ... I had in the 1990s a Nikon F 60 and I took awesome pictures with that camera , I find with any Nikon older I don't care what it is you'll take good pictures
video started too hard, that scene was too well made
Excellent video 😮!
Show me on this teddy bear 🧸 where the pentax touched you, brutal opinions 😮
This is the camera Pentax should re-release. Put metal top and bottom plates on it and go.
This was a very good review,i have possibly to buy it for 35 Dollars :)
Image a sigma art 24-105 on a minolta dynax7 or minolta dynax 9😅 well... let it Boom!
I'm glad to have stumbled upon this camera at a thrift/vintage store as I was on a big hunt for a really good, expensive camera. It's very affordable at the price that I got it. I love how boxy it is and with all the buttons and screen this feels like a very premium thing in your hands. Great camera to experiment with film photography because of how easy it makes it. I also went on to buy a 3000i which feels like a rounder, more simple yet still premium product.
I´ve got one of this!
I bought a used FG in the late 1980s as a back-up camera. I never used it, so it was sold a year later. Years later, I began to appreciate just what a great camera it is, so I bought another. In the business of selling cameras, Nikon had dominated as "the pro's camera" for 20 years. However, the money in the business is selling to consumers, not to a relative handful of working pros. By 1980, Olympus, Pentax and to a lesser extent Konica and Minolta, had one or two generations of smaller, lighter, and more user-friendly cameras in the market, and they had been eating Nikon's lunch for years. Nikon belatedly designed the grossly ill-advised EM as their competition at that level. Many were sold, and although it looks cheap and junky, it proved to be a durable if under-featured camera. To make matters, worse, Nikon advertised the EM with a new like of "Nikon" branded lenses targeted as EM companions by labelling them not as good as real Nikkor lenses. The whole presentation informed prospective buyers that "If you are some pussy who can't learn how to use a real camera, Nikon offers this pile of junk for you lowlifes." They were not inexpensive, but they cost a lot less than a Nikon body or Nikkor lenses. Between 1980 and 1982, two situations were realized by Nikon. (1) The EM was a dead end looser and would not compete against an Oly OM or Pentax M-series, and (2) They needed to get their shit together or else. At that time, Nikon was developing a future upgrade for the FM/FE series, to become the FA. So Nikon designed the FG from scratch and invested into it some of the shutter control and metering tech they were preparing for the FA (not the matrix metering, however). For the reason stated in the video, the FG was an instant success, but by 1984, to Nikon's distress, it was taking sales from the more expensive FM/FE.FA series. Nikon responded by killing the FG in favor of the new FG-20, which used the FG shell and some insides (No new tooling required), but killed features until it functioned like the old EM. Sales of the FG-20 dropped dead, and it was discontinued a few years later. Today, a good condition, used FG for $50-100 is the best deal in a NIkon body. Oddly, the used EM and FG-20 cost about the same. Ignorance is truly bliss.
i still have mine in mint pristine condition as if it just came out of the box
Went and got me the SCA 343 flash cord for the totally cool TTL feature.
and, it as the M90 shutter ... works w/o batteries!
P30t has AF.
No it doesn't
Perfectly fits for everyone!!! Lightweight, auto mode plus manual. What else do you need?
The Pentax P30T was my favorite manual focus SLR. It was so well laid out. They say the last of a technology is always the best. That camera was a joy to use.
How does this video have so little likes and comments.. I really enjoyed your video. Thank you for making it 😊
we dont forget Pentax its only company which will still produce film cameras. and we love them. even tho I am a sony fanboy
Didn’t the 5000 have AF as well? My 5000i has AF.
I have 7000i model, but definitely gonna get 7000. I just love Minolta.
Maxxum 7000 was my first SLR. This video made me want to pick one up again :).
Tenx
I bought one for my wife back in 1985, along with a Nikkor 35-70mm f/3.3-4.5 AI zoom lens and Nikon SB-15 flash unit to go along with it. She took an interest in photography but didn't want to have to fiddle with setting exposure manually but more so the FG has multiple exposure modes (full program auto, aperture preferred auto, and full manual) allowing it to be a very versatile and handy photographic instrument. Also with the SB-15 flash, it has TTL flash metering capability to make for virtually foolproof flash exposures. She took many excellent photographs with hers and won a couple of contests in our local photography club competitions. It has an electronically controlled shutter but has a single 'mechanical' shutter speed in the event of battery failure. It doesn't have quite the robust build quality of the Nikon mechanical SLR cameras but it is a handy SLR film camera which allows for access to most of Nikon's AI/AIS/E series lenses from the period. It is still in the family as I passed it on to my granddaughter.
I just bought one for 30 $.
Nice video, great voice and text. I like my P30t just fine, with its minimal Darth Vader look.
Just packed up mine today
I have a 7000. My 2nd camera.
Which lens is using this pentax p30t how can i find it on amazon or ebay?
Having used the FG and the Canon AE-1 Program, I would give the FG a slight edge mainly because of the mechanical backup speed and its operation on the manual mode. Apparently, Nikon downgraded this camera to the FG-20 because it was cutting into sales of the FE2.
Your voice is so sexy! 💙
That was a crazy good review 🤯 Please make more!
"Misogynistic instincts of the day"??? I don't remember the 80's being any more misogynistic than today, and if Nikon made the EM as a camera for women then that would dispel misogyny rather than reinforce it,you don't invest time and money into making something for a sex you have a hatred or strong mislike for unless it were to hinder them in some way,and the EM hardly hinders : on the contrary it introduces people to Nikon slr's in order to get them into buying other Nikon products, surely ? Advertising the EM as "for women" is less misogynistic and more the patronising standpoint of advertiser's,not the attitude of the decade,or the people living in it. Great review though of a great little camera, got my FG and FA in the early 80's and they're both still going strong.
Hello AJB356! Thank you for your comment. Yes, Nikon designed the EM for what they considered an emerging market of female photographers. Their solution was to simplify operation to make it easier to women to use. There's a few different ways to look at this, and it is good they considered women in their marketing and product development. To make a product that's easier for *everyone* to use is good too. If, however, Nikon assumed that to capture the women's photography market, the product must be simplified - as opposed to, for example, improved - suggests that they may not have thought women to be as interested in photography, nor as capable with cameras as men are. This does reflect a attitude towards women. Is that misogyny or simply patronizing? Is being patronizing misogynistic? I'm not here to parse the semantics, and I'm not a scholar in women's issues. The EM was not a successful product and did not activate the female photography market as they expected. I would expect that a woman who was interested in SLR photography would want full control over the camera, just as any man might. And I'd expect there are both men and women who might want a simpler, easier to use, camera too. Nikon assumed this had to do with gender, and I think that was a mistake. Are things better for women today than the early 80's? Probably, but the issues that existed for women then aren't resolved today either.
@@radfi2434 I agree ,it was poor marketing coupled with a dose of sexism. I' m pretty sure that wasn't how it was marketed here in the UK. I don't think our advertising standards would've allowed it ! At a round guess I would say that particular ad was aimed at the American and not European market. It's nice to see folk like yourself re-evaluating old cameras on RUclips ( which makes me old now ) and dare I say with a little panache 😁 I never thought of my FG as a bit of a failed camera, just capable and easy to use, but everyone's entitled to their opinion, even journalists that get it wrong🤣
The use of the word yuppy is why I subbed
Wow amazing thank you
My father gave me his Maxxum 7000 a few years ago. My childhood was shot on that camera.
It’s a liiiiiiiiiitle cringey that the pacing, delivery, phrasing, tone, style of subtle humor, is about as close as you can get to completely mimicking RegularCars’ “Regular Car Reviews” pacing, delivery, phrasing, tone, and style of subtle humor. I’m not sure if it’s satire with an unseen wink and a nod, or if it’s liking that whole style, and then straight up copying it as if it’s not something being copied. Really distracted me through the whole video and just has me cringing pretty hard. 😬😬😬 Peace and love though. Just needed to express my feeling cringe. 😬✌🏼👍🏼
Hey! No worries. On one hand I appreciate you noticing the similarity. I love RCR and have been watching them from the beginning. They do such and excellent job of addressing the cultural relevance of those cars, they’re well researched and damn funny. On the other hand, the intention was certainly not to copy, but I’ve absolutely been inspired by their style. If you don’t like it, that’s cool. And RCR deserves the credit. I appreciate the view and the feedback.
Wonderfully produced video. I recently got a maxxum 7000 a few weeks ago and I can't stop fawning over it. It screams 80s with it's hefty boxy design. It reminds me of the knight rider car with all of its buttons, beeping, and lcds haha. I'm astonished how it isn't more expensive nowadays as I got mine off eBay for $40 with a case and a strap (even came with batteries)! People are clamoring that their once cheap ae 1s and k1000s are being driven through the roof with the resurgence of film photography, when there is a camera legend right under their noses!
I love the boxy design. That's why I bought a 7000 rather than the improved 7000i which has a more smooth/rounded construction.
The only analog SLR I will ever need. Just bought a second one as a "backup" (I'll probably be able to give it to my future grand-kids xD )
Love your narrative style!
thank you!
Bro 🤦🏻♂️ you gotta at least say “thank you, I took a ton of inspiration from Brian from RegularCars: “Regular Car Reviews” 🙈
I was given a P30n for my 17th birthday in ‘97 and it began what would be my career. I got around the lack of manual ISO by rolling my own film onto film canisters with a different DX code. Unfortunately the n didn’t have a cable release option, so very gently pressing of the normal release button, or self timer was the way to go…I never missed an image due to the lack of one though. Still have the camera today, still runs beautiful. As you say, beautiful simplicity.
I bought the P3n new way back early 90’s. The way you see the shutter speed adjustments in the viewfinder really makes shooting manual a breeze and very quick. No need for exposure compensation or adjustable iso because of that. Not sure how that compares to the P30t but probably the same. For me it is a light fast handling little street shooter camera. With a big supply of affordable and great glass. In fact all these years later and i am starting to shoot that very same camera again.
I'm necro'ing a thread I know, but the P30t is very similar. The one thing that it has that I love over most other cameras is a diagonal split screen viewfinder that makes manual focussing utterly lovely. Sadly the P3n (P30n in Europe) does not have that.
Christ I went and grabbed one because of this video.
Really enjoyed your video 🙌
Thanks!
what a lovely video about this humble camera. what I really miss in it is exposure compensation.
The Nikon FG is an amazing little camera. Unless you're going into the battlefield, it's all you really need.
12 subs wtf i thought you had at least 5K
He's using way too many big words for the average subscriber. Lol
I love this. Keep reviewing my man
I love this video so much I found this camera at good will in great condition. I love learning about the cameras. It feels great in my hand I want to see how the pictures come out I might is it more than my minolta x370.
Great video! Thanks
Right I found this camera and I’m happy to learn about it
@@stacy3 a goodwill near me I was so excited
@@stacy3 No it had a 50mm on it
I know this is probably a new channel, but I can't believe it's not getting the recognition it deserves with such great content. Keep up the good work man!!
Thanks! I really appreciate it. I’ve got one in the works for the Minolta Maxxum 7000 coming soon. Hope you get the chance the see it!
@@radfi2434 will sure do!! 😁
