Hi Joel!!! I was wondering if you had the charts for this and the solo part you’re playing off? Would love to put this in my recital! Thanks, Steve

Hey Steve, we were all just improvising so there aren’t ant parts to play off. You can find a lead sheet to “Yesterdays” in the Real Book or you can order the Jamey Aebersold volume, which has some nice chords for this tune. If you want to transcribe and play anything I played, feel free!

Thanks so much! Jazz has been a lifelong friend to me and I've been playing it since I was 12yrs old. My best advice would be to start learning songs. Pick an easy song, maybe a slow blues song or a simple song such as Cantaloupe Island or Blue Bossa and really spend some time learning how to solo over it. Listen to recordings of the song and try to copy the notes and licks you hear great players using. Your first tune might take some time before you feel like you can solo well. Then pick another and do the same. Soon you will have a few tunes you can play well. Good luck and keep loving and listening to jazz!

@@joedollard4921 Hello, it's me again, thanks for the tip, I'm currently taking a professional jazz course (I'm 17 years old), I've been playing euphonium for 4 years, I'm very happy with my progress, when I finish the course, I'm going to teach kids. Thank you, you were my inspiration to try to introduce euphonium into jazz, here in Portugal there is little talk about euphonium in jazz. I want to create something innovative with this instrument

This is great. I love hearing euphonium playing jazz. I played baritone horn in the high school concert and marching band but when I wanted to join the jazz ensemble, I got a lot of resistance from the other members. I was a good soloist but It wasn't a cool enough instrument and they thought I would make them look like just another marching band trying to play jazz. My band teacher was kind of a hipster who always sided with the cool and popular students so he agreed. They only allowed me to join if I played valve trombone and they really didn't even want that either because they claimed it threw off the visual rhythm and symmetry of seeing slide trombones in action. I finally had to settle for 3rd and 4th chair trumpet parts which meant I couldn't solo since I didn't have the proper embrouchure to hit high notes. I wish I could have shown them this video.

Unfortunately, this is a very common story for euphonium players! The euph is a very vocal, round sound that wasn't used in the big band era so it kind of missed out. It's a GREAT jazz instrument, though, and works really well in a smaller, combo setting. I played valve bones in jazz bands for a while t eventually I learned slide so I could play in better bands but I always solo on euph because it's so much fun!

Thanks Tristan! Euphonium is indeed a wonderful instrument for jazz combo work. It's easy to play, has a great range and you can really get around on it. This particular recording was made quite some time ago. If you want to hear the how the euphonium can work with big band, you can listen to a performance I did with the Army Blues this last February here: ruclips.net/video/G8qQ0fpNNIo/видео.html.

Thanks, Valerio, good to know someone is listening! I need to post some newer stuff. This is from a few years back. Euphonium is an excellent jazz instrument, especially in a combo setting where you can really hear it well. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work as well in a big band setting so it missed out on the big band era.
