When you realize that some of the men at this battle were officers during the great war; then witnessed the atrocities of NAZI Germany in there twilight years. Possibly even dying in a communist state. As the Chinese like to say to there enemies "May you live in interesting times."
A lot of Wehrmacht or even SS high officers were in both the Empire's Army and in the interwar Reichswehr. It's not impossible that a young German man involved in this could have then been a general or chief of staff or something 40 years later though I don't know if that actually did happen
This wouldn't shock me, frankly. See, the Russian and later Soviet general Dmitry Karbyshev was born early enough to fight in the Russo-Japanese war, just four years after the Boxer Rebellion. He would go on to fight in the First World War, the Russian Civil War, and the Second World War, where he died after being tortured to death at a Nazi concentration camp. He was born in 1880.
