Cape/Common Wolf Snake (Lycophidion capense) | Herping South Africa
Cape/Common Wolf Snake (Lycophidion capense) | Herping South Africa
During our search for the elusive Albany adder, we came across this amazing species. Although quite commonly found, this was a first-time encounter for me, which made this trip just so much more amazing.
The Common/Cape wolf snake is quite difficult to distinguish from the extremely venomous stiletto snake, so it is best to leave these snakes alone when crossing paths.
As always, remember to stand for what we stand on.

    • @matvangeo
      @matvangeo Месяц назад

      @@jasonmanahan6188 I went looking for the central ranges taipan on the western side of the Mcdonnels range in central Australia. They don’t occur in Papua New Guinea. They are more venomous than the coastal taipan where the subcutaneous LD50 value of this species is 0.106 mg/kg, the Central ranges taipan has a LD50 measured on mice to be 0.075 mg/Kg

    • @jasonmanahan6188

    • @matvangeo
      @matvangeo Месяц назад

      @@jasonmanahan6188 there is very little information about the Papuan taipan, it’s a subspecies of the costal taipan so I would assume the venom is similar. No LD50 rating is available for the subspecies.

    I've had them swim to my boat before being curious but it wasn't in aggression. Nothing scarier than a snake swimming towards you especially when they're inflated and their whole body is sitting perfectly on top of the water. At that point you know exactly what it is and unfortunately exactly what it's not which would be the normal sinking water snake.

    What are your chances if you are bitten by this snake in the Kruger National park? Do they store antivenin in the park?

    • @matvangeo
      @matvangeo 8 месяцев назад

      Hi Ethan, your chances of being bitten by any snake in the Kruger are very slim. Black mambas are very nervous and shy snakes, and will move off when there are people around. I’m not sure if there have anti-venom in Kruger hospitals, I would assume they do, but I know that in hoedspruit they would have.

    Beautiful snakes. They were the most common for us to come across in Walkerville, Gauteng, and responsible for most snake bites to pets like dogs and horses. I lost a puppy that got bitten while killing what must've been a juvenile by it's length and colouration. Unfortunately no antivenin could be found to save him and the vet phoned multiple sources, all out of stock 😢. Snakes are still my favourite reptiles. Thank you for the educational video, I learned a lot!

    I couldn't find any information on flying snakes in South Africa but I saw one in South Africa fly right over my head once before I even knew flying snakes existed. It was green, slim, and it was winding its head and body through the air and looked a lot like many of the flying snakes I've seen in videos since then. In fact probably a lot like the one this guy is handling.
