I explain why yellow cardinals are yellow and why we expect to see and do see yellow variants of essentially all red birds. I also give pointers for how to tell male yellow cardinals from female cardinals, which can also appear quite yellow. As with any challenging and rewarding activity, birding can be hard to break into. I advocate a new approach to beginning birding where you learn birds in the same way you learn other familiar objects. The result is a stress free and fun way to start putting names to birds. reduced-state finch discoloration mystery: its a camouflage function, red stands out too much (source: i am a bird)
Sorry for the double comment. It appeared to me as I first commented that the comment didn't post. Upon doing the second, low a behold my first shows up.
While returning home from church today, my wife noticed a dead bird on our lawn. Probably a window collision demise. Being a novice bird guy, I thought I had discovered a new bird breed. I thought of the yellow tip tail of the Waxwing but this one was orange. I took to the bird book and to the internet to see a breed with orange tip on the tail. That's when I tripped on your video. Thanks for educating me on a possible mutation or a better possibility of that of a food diet that probably causes this variant.
What brings me to your sight today is a recent interest in the variant wax wing. I would consider myself a novice bird watcher, always interested in checking off another breed I never saw or saw for the first time. Today while returning home from Church, my wife noticed a dead bird on our lawn. A likely window demise. The tail tip was orange. Thinking I found another bird breed, I took to the books and to the internet. Here I am. So glad to discover a potential mutation or more likely food source that effects a small percentage of this beautiful bird. Thanks for posting this useful video.
When I was little kid in 2022 I was five and i saw a red cardinal and green cardinal and yellow cardinal perched in my sticks
So cool! Think most people would be blown away seeing this, but maybe more so finding out Chicago is also home to many Parrots (Quaker parrot colonies thriving for many years )
Seen one yesterday cedar rapids iowa
Absolutely Stunning 💛
Xanthochromism, I believe a genetic drift or mutation that limits the processing of carotene.
I have a baby that has fallen from the nest and it has the orange tail feather tips!!
Thanks for great job sharing your birding knowledge! Have a question, if millions of birds molt once or twice a year where are all their feathers? I live in Fl with lots of birds and see some here and there but not as many as I think there should be. Thanks!
Thank you for this explanation! Hope I get to someday see a yellow cardinal ❤
There was a yellow cardinal on my feeder today , upstate NY. Gorgeous
I just saw a yellow cardinal in my Minnesota yard last Friday. May 3rd,2024
Spotted yellow female cardinal with 2 red males in Kelso, TN
Yellow Cardinal at the feeder in Hallsville, Mo.
Cheers, Birding Better, very informative. I have been undecided about getting the Merlin app. Your video has convinced me to download it. I have been watching birds since I was 8, I am now 76, and I still get times of doubt 🤦. I am a member of the RSPB and BTO. Thank you, great video.
Really Beautiful Cardinal!
So pretty. Thanks for the video.🌿
TRUMP
The WOKE NUTS NEED TO WAKE UP I WILL FEED BIRDS FOREVERMORE

I and my wife have seen a true Bright yellow scarlet Tanager in May some years ago, and watched for quite a while.
Sound is available now & I love it!
So true
Does it work with an external microphone connected on the phone's USB?
I have this app and love it
Thanks for sharing
I have one in wake forest nc, it moved in above my red pair. Female yellow. At first the male was aggressive towards her, now they all eat together.
I have a yellow cardinal visiting my bird feeder in Lakeland, FL. It is beautiful! I have a question: how does the missing enzyme manifest in a female cardinal?
I seen one in Decatur Illinois
I’m in Richmond Virginia I spotted one yesterday
I think you have a typo in your title of this video. It says "Merin Bird ID" and I think it should be "Merlin"
Thank you. My interest has definitely been beaked.
What’s the best solution for cleaning Against Salmonella? It’s May 2023 & I planned to take down my feeders in April. But this year, I just couldn’t. I do enjoy watching all the birds I see each day…and a few squirrel too I sad to say. But this year I’ve kept it up. But with warmer spring, it seems there’s more feces both on platform & watering bowl. I’ve used Alcohol to clean but I’m worried about alcohol being too harsh. Just downloaded the app this weekend. Absolutely amazing, and I haven't even gotten deep in yet! I highly recommend it!
I just saw a yellow Cardinal in Illinois. ❤
We are in Peoria and I've been hoping to see a yellow but I know they are very rare. Congratulations on seeing a Yellow!
Just today saw one in Jersey
Incredible !
thanks I just got my first bird feeders
Husband saw one in SE Florida east of Port Saint Lucy in late 2022. Does this mean they have a hard time attracting a female? I thought Females are attracted to males by their red color?
We just saw one in our back yard in eastern Pennsylvania
I agree!
Too many "uh's" for me! Drives me insane to hear people say "uhh" constantly while talking. Had to end the video and move onto another one.
You sound like Steve Carell
Just for fun since you mentioned it. Color, The average memory time frame for color is less than 3 seconds. That is why when a police officer asking for a description of the suspect, may well get 4-5 different colors on jeans and t shirt etc. I only say this, because most folks don't know that. Which could explain why when you mention someone calling you and they get the color wrong or the color they recall the best, from the colors, Interesting fact, thought I would share with you since you mentioned colors etc. Thanks for the video and have a blessed weekend and Merry Christmas. Dale
Wow! Great information on birding strategy that I have not seen elsewhere. Thanks for a wonderful tutorial!
Fascinating.
Perhaps I missed it in the video, but what impact is there on these yellow variations given color is so important for the male cardinals? It would seem reasonable that the biggest issue would be these are rejected by females.
Nice and beautiful video. Thanks for sharing..
Nature is fascinating. Thanks for the explanation!
