Suor Angelica non è assolutamente per soprano leggero... E il timbro di questo soprano è inequivocabile... Infatti, il gran finale col do sopracuto è venuto a mancare... Certo che il soprano leggero ha i do, ma è la "tessitura" di quest'opera che è pesante... Cantare repertori diversi dal proprio, porta ad appesantire ogni nota, perdendo la facilità dell'emissione dei suoni😢

For a provincial theater not so bad - but of course not a top performance like Vienna, Berlin, Munich.

wow that was such a good prelude. It adds so much context and understanding to the rest of the opera. More performances should do that

I have seen several performances of Puccinis incredible OPERA Suor Angelica. And yet I am never satisfied with some very poor attempts in performing this One Act Masterpiece. In the early 80s Renata Scotto performed all three operas. She was well past her Prime & she captured the character with great insight. She is a very good actress & vocally she pulled it off. I bought the Opera & still have it on vinyl. I would not recommend adding her performance to your musical library because it's not a truly great performance. She did not omit all the demanding High Cs. On the recording has a young Ileana Cotrubas & she sings Sister Genevieve beautifully. Marilyn Horne sings the horrible cold hearted Aunt & she has never been a great MEZZO Soprano. What I am waiting for is for Saioa Hernandez to sing Angelica with her great beautiful powerful voice. She has sung Angelica before & plans to perform Angelica again. Tebaldi recorded Angelica in 1962 & omitted the H Cs . Her voice was in top form but by 1960 she was struggling with her top voice . Sad to say. This production by Portland State university was a very poor attempt in performing Angelica. I know their young but I don't for see any Operatic carreras for any of the principal singers. This is such a tearjerking opera and it must be one of the most difficult operas to perform. I know B Sills quit after her first performance. If you put too much emotion into acting, you could ruin your singing part. How does the soprano, playing Angelica, deal with it? Patricia Racette did great in the San Francisco War Memorial Opera.
Horrible performance, one of the most beautiful Operas of Master Puccini. Saori Erickson, has a beautiful voice, but it is not adequate for this repertoire, nor the one that sings to the Zia principessa, has the Low notes, with enough power, which is expected. The Set is beautiful, many theaters in the world could be inspired instead of the crap they design.The protagonist opens up the arms that look like an airplane that at any moment will fly away. She doesn't have the right voice, and can't handle a pianissimi by the end of her aria. What is a college performance? Frightening final scene, when the fat woman falls to the floor, it sounds as if the stage was going to break. And what about the High C near the end. And in the end the choir that must sing high C in pianissimo, it seems that all were being raped. A little more respect for Master Puccini. For your next event choose something of Gilbert & Sullivan and leave Puccini alone. I suppose the subscribers of this channel will be familiar to those who sing.
With all due respect, for an amateur production I thought it was quite charming. All the budding actresses were very believable as young nuns. True she didn't quite nail the emotion of Senza Mamma, but better to under-egg than over-egg the pudding as this is an easy role to "ham-up", so to speak, and the emotional depth of the music lost to sentimentality. I'll certainly take her Suor Angelica over Ermonela Jaho's vibrato-heavy version, particularly in 10 years time once she's more experienced.
@@manonvernon8646 Respectfully, I think that being such young singers they got into quite dangerous terrain. They could have chosen something simpler to sing from Pergolesi or Paisiello. To allow, at the same time, the voices of each one to evolve naturally, no one begins so young singing Puccini, let alone the leading role of Suor Angelica.

@@kevleknuk My dear friend, singing an Opera is not just singing lalalalala. I am a PhD. in Musicology, Pianist, and vocal coach for Opera singers. I am a humble human being, when I say my opinions, I do not intend to offend anyone, just maybe try to make you understand the intention of the Composer. and #SuorAngelica is one of the most difficult roles in the soprano repertoire, the final enseena is a true tour de Force for the leading soprano.
The singers do a fine job, and it's an intelligent production. But it loses a lot of its charm due to the translation. I know, it was standard practice once upon a time, but that was a time where it was not possible to have electronic boards with the translated lyrics above (or to the side of) the stage. This is possible now and you should make use of it. Sure, I'm in a privileged position, because I'm Austrian and therefore understand the original. But I wouldn't want to watch a version of Carmen translated to German either.
Casutama sorry, but this is a English rendition, it’s fabulous. I saw this performed by the Welsh National Opera sang in English and it was fabulous. Maybe your local opera house does performances in Austrian, but I really appreciated seeing *my* first opera several years ago sang in my native tongue. Your opinion is not the same as a fact. It lost no charm! Surtitles were in place too.
@@JulieWallis1963 Of course my comment - by its very nature - is just an opinion. Nevertheless, I find it annoying when musicals and operettas are translated. As far as I know, operas aren't translated either, and I prefer it that way. This doesn't always favour me - despite the fact that so many composers were either Austrian or German, they often wrote in Italian. Especially when you do have surtitles, it really makes no sense to me to perform the translation rather than the original. Since I live in Austria, yes, my local opera house performs this operetta in its original form. They also perform Carmen in French and Lucia di Lammermoor in Italian. The only genre where they tend to depart from that trend is with musicals - those are mostly performed in German rather than in their (mostly) English originals. And I've been lobbying for them to change that for years. Nevertheless, I didn't mean to offend you - it's completely understandable that you're glad to see something you enjoy in your native language.
Then don't watch it. I prefer a complete English version to the current practice of dialogue in English and lyrics in French or German, depending on the opera.
@@larrymoore358 My problem is not with this specific production - which I agree is excellent - but with the trend of translating operettas and musicals (and sometimes operas) in the first place. This is unnecessary in an age where an aria's translation can be displayed by surtitles where it can be much more faithful to the original, because it isn't confined by the musical format. The fact that they perform musicals like My Fair Lady in German at my local theatre has bothered me forever. I don't mind if they do the dialogue in German, but why would you tamper with the music?! I prefer things be sung the way they were originally intended.
I disagree I chose to view this production because it is not in German. I hate when they do this in German. My exposure to this work was The Met English version and I prefer it done in English always! There are excellent English translations of this piece and it is a piece that is meant to relax, laugh and enjoy not to spend the evening reading those irritating overhead titles. The pronunciation and diction of the singers is excellent. This is not a heavy, serious, Masterwork but a charming and frothy bit of Musical Theater that has a brilliance and genius uniquely it's own. I love this just as it is presented.

This is an EXCELLENT production. Much better than the many high flown big opera house ones. The direction is so intelligent and much thought has gone into it. Bravo!
I love Die Fledermaus, and I enjoyed this performance immensely. Great enthusiasm and comic talent from the entire cast which is absolutely essential for Die Fledermaus, maybe even more than great singing. I can't really judge the singing, as I'm not a Opera buff, but I thought it was superb, especially Saori Erickson as Rosalinde. The Csardas was also good, but this was the only time I could hear Miss Erickson is not yet a world class singer, but I think she could become one! I also liked the "marvelous translation" (Rosalinde) which is fresh and witty, but this is of course a matter of taste, as it it not really a translation, but rather an adaptation of the phantastic German libretto which must be very hard to translate (I'm German), but the plot remains fully intact. Plus I really hate the terrible "essence of the essence/king of effervescence" part of the old translation, so I'm glad they got rid of that here.
Saori Erickson has very rich and beautiful voice.

I thought it was delightful. This production was done entirely by university students. These are not professionals. In that respect I'd say they were remarkable!

Wow, so many people with very decided opinions as to how exactly an opera should be performed. My opera group was thrilled to find this recording!
one should perform an opera or operetta in its original language and if the public doesn't understand it they had to read the subtitles!
In NY Times Anthony Tommisini, "In the 19th century performing opera in translation was standard practice. Verdi fully expected that when one of his operas was performed outside Italy the libretto would be translated into the language of the audience. Performing opera in translation is an honorable practice that still thrives at some companies, like the English National Opera." Just sayin'

This is a brilliant translation, so funny and sophisticated and charming. I love it. Spare me the guttural German which I have to struggle through to comprehend. I prefer this piece in English, easily digested and light and frothy as champagne1
For the most part Operas are usually presented in every other country but this one in the native language of the audience. They Translate the Libretto into the native tongue. Let's not be snobbish, egg heads here in America and nit pick about original language when most Europeans freely translate. Why insist on Original Language only productions ? I do not get the freedom and lattitude given A Director who can give Lucia a AK 47 to kill off her guest and have her toss off a quickie in the hay stack with Edgardo , or mount Tosca on the Back of a Truck , or Scarpia turn his Apartments into a brothel ,If this anything goes means of production and staging is allowed then for God sake let them sing the damn music in English!

Hast du dir schon einmal den deutschen Originaltext angehört? Reimform vom Feinsten. Das ist nun wirklich nicht der Punkt, bei dem man sich bei dieser Aufführung beschweren darf.
