Citizen Promaster Navihawk C300-Q00192 World Time slide rule bezel battery service + review

I think this watch was made in the late 90s. A very cool quartz watch by Citizen which is aviation inspired. Battery replaced, gasket greased. Now I just need to find a new band!
An acceptable $10 watch? Puritan PUR60552W w/ a Japanese Miyota 21155 calendar movement teardown.

Honestly not a bod watch... It might actually last 1-5 years of daily wear, perhaps. The cost of buying this movement new on Esslinger is $11 shipping. So the manufacturing cost of this watch might be $15-$20, perhaps.

Watches like this are why fashion watches are frowned upon. DO NOT BUY!!! It should be illegal to produce such a garbage product... It is an unnecessary tax on the environment. The amount of money in fuel to manufacture and transport this watch is worth significantly more... The movement despite being a Chinese made one is actually the most quality part of the whole watch.

Woah, talk about a very interesting watch... Turns out it is a Victorinox. An early one at that most likely. Never seen an IISA k63/3020 movement before... I wonder how common these movements were back in the 90s? This movement is RARE today. I am having a hard time finding any bare movements. Very cool watch!

    Sometimes you have to “kick start” the movement by “shorting” it with a metal paper clip that is inserted into a hole and grounded to the movement. Not sure if this is one of those but check it out.

    Using the dental pic as a pry is fine, but as you get more accustomed to using tweezers you will likely use it less and less. I have 4 pairs of tweezers on my bench, stainless with a medium tip which is use for light prying, brass tweezer with a fine point for general "in movement" work including what you did here to release the battery from any hold; a pair of ultra fine non mag tweezers to pic up small parts and tiny screws and finally a pair of plastic tweezers for picking up batteries, as you did. That said, it is difficult to use the plastic tweezers to "push" the battery into its slot because the plastic slips on the battery easily. Putting force on the tweezers also causes them to flex a bit and thus make it more unstable when pushing. I find it easier to initially place the battery with plastic and then use my medium point stainless tweezers to actually push the battery in using my pinch method you used well in this vid. As for the battery "hold" you encountered on this movement at 13:31 , yes it has two holes for tweezers because it's reversible, but this was a tricky one. What I do is insert the tab on the far side, as you did, and then use my tweezers in the far side hole as a hold. Then, instead of using my other set of tweezers in the near side hole, I simply put my tweezers on the tab itsself to slide it into place. I do this because the near side hole is spaced too far from the tab to easily slid it into the slot.

    • @JT_Trades_Treasure
      @JT_Trades_Treasure 8 дней назад

      Hmm, looks like I need a few more pairs of tweezers to get. I think your setup is extremely logical. I completely understand the slippery issue with the plastic tweezers, the struggle is true there. I was not aware that the battery hold was reversable! That makes sense. I think I get your technique mentioned for reinstallation. I will try that out next time!

    Because they are a mechanical movement the pivots need to be cleaned and lubricated. You can Remove the hands and dial face. Then remove the balance and coil/electrics. Then the rest is just like a regular Timex. Clean in Naphtha rinse with IPA blow dry. Then lubricate the pivots and reassemble.

    • @JT_Trades_Treasure

      Hey, I have heard of Naphtha! I have a ton of Timex watches that need a Naphtha fume bath. I heard it works wonders for pocket watches, too. I don't have any lubricants at this time... Definitely on my to buy list. Do you have any recommendations? I don't plan on taking apart entire movements and servicing them anytime soon. @JT_Trades_Treasure 12 дней назад

      I just used generic "watch gasket grease" usually just silicone. You can get it with the applicator on Ebay for less than $10. I did not replace the gasket. The original gasket seemed good enough and this watch is only really rated for 100M so I figured greasing is good enough. The more likely a watch will actually end up underwater the more likely I would replace a arguably good feeling gasket and grease. Cheers!

  • @crli4353
    @crli4353 16 дней назад

    Well done, THAT is how you properly change a battery without needing fuzzy gloves or cots. You may find it better however, to keep the movement mounted to the dial and hands until such time as you MUST take it apart because when you keep to together you know what parts fit together and there is less chance of loosing parts. As you mentioned, dial feet are easy to break, unless you keep the dial mated to the movement until needed.

      Sorry for the delay. Been addicted to Diablo 2 recently... Ladder reset. The thing I put the watch on is just called a watch cushion or pad. I use it as a reference point for my camera primarily but it also protects the watch, too. Most the watches I work on have wear on them anyways so it is mildly useful. The tool I use to remove cases is just a caseback wrench or it is also called a caseback remover. I would argue if you do get one make sure you get a well made one not from China and make sure it has the rectangular studs as those are way more useful. I hope this helps. Thanks for the comment and your business!

    I call them gas station watches and while I agree they are poorly made, they DO have a place in the market. First and foremost, although cheaply made, they do function and serve the purpose for which they were built.....to tell time. They may not work for long depending on how they are worn but thats relative. Additionally they make decent "first watches" for young people, particularly when they are purchased used in a thrift shop for under 5 dollars. I change the batteries in these type watches surprisingly often and like the one you had here, the hour markers ALWAYS fall off, BUT, they do still keep time. So, while you and I would never own or wear one, these exist so that no matter how destitute you are in life, you can always afford to tell the time...........until you need to change the battery and realize, as you rightly said, the battery is worth more than the watch.

    • @JT_Trades_Treasure
      @JT_Trades_Treasure 22 дня назад

      Interesting perspective here. I admit I am ignorant when it comes to the super affordable watches. My very first watch I ever wore was a Victorinox Garrison I bought at a garage sale for $25, hah. I completely agree with your bargain idea on watches and it is a philosophy that is deeply engrained in all forms of collecting for me. I know the really cheap ones with a good Miyota 2035 movement in them are fantastic even if the craftsmanship is poor as those movements will keep going for decades. I guess I am just not sure how accurate or reliable this Sunon movement is. But it sounds like from your perspective they are acceptable. I can always learn more that is for sure!

    I am happy you used a cot and not that fuzzy death glove but if you practice left hand usage you will find you will never need to use gloves or cots. The only time I use cots is when I am replacing a movement. If you can learn to use tweezers in both hands simultaneously, your work will be far more efficient. When using your plastic tweezers to hold the movement down when prying, use the back of the tweezers....the tips, as you saw, tend to slide around.

    The lubricator had enough in it, no need to add anymore, in fact I would take some of that back out. Since you have a less expensive lubricator, it's necessary to push down on the center of the lubricator to get the sponges to touch. Yours will work just a bit more finicky. Just keep using it and you get used to it and make it work for you.

  • @crli4353
    @crli4353 Месяц назад

    Very lucky, you learned the hard way it's not necessary to have removed the bridge screw or the bridge. There was a hole in the bridge next to the screw you removed. Loosen both bridge screws by 1 turn, then take your brass tweezers and insert into said hole to slide the bridge away from the battery. Remove and replace battery. Insert tip of brass tweezers into the hole on the bridge and use it as a pivot point to slide the bridge back over the battery and under the bridge screw. Not only does this save time, but it also makes it nearly impossible to loose parts since none of them are removed from the movement. Anytime you see a hole in a battery terminal bridge, that is almost always a pivot point to insert a tool. Silicone is not toxic on your fingers, just dont eat it. As for the towel, thats the next thing to get rid of after those fuzzy lint tap gloves. Pick up a cheap watch makers mat as well as a gasket greaser. Hold off on buying anything Bergeon or Horotec until you have the basics would be my advice. Oh yeah, think that movement is a 251.262 not a 292

    • @JT_Trades_Treasure
      @JT_Trades_Treasure Месяц назад

      Ahhh, the hole and that little arrow shows that it hinges. I missed that before. I really should not work on watches so late... I make lots of mistakes. Forgot to blow out the inside, will do that soon just for peace of mind. Thanks for the explanation there. I will invest in a mat. The towel is nice for when I do my product photography. But it is not nice to work on. Yes, same issue with the fuzzy gloves. I need to separate my servicing tools from my photography tools. I have ADHD so uhhh... I forget things constantly. I think that is obvious by now XD. Hmmm. My thought process is to buy cheap tools and replace what gets used with mid quality, then high quality. Makes the most sense at the moment. I corrected the movement in the title. Thank you for that!

    Well done, how long ago was this vid made? What you did with the screwdrivers was very important and lots of people who change batteries dont of it. CHECK the size of your screwdriver against the screws. The head of the driver should always be as close a match to the screw as possible in width and blade thickness to avoid damaging the screw. Looking forward to seeing some new projects and never seeing those fuzzy gloves of death again, lol.

    • @JT_Trades_Treasure
      @JT_Trades_Treasure Месяц назад

      TY! Yeah, I bought a bunch of watch tools at a garage sale 6 years ago and it had a bunch of watchmakers screw drivers in it. I got by with it but found myself wasting too much time digging around for the right size. These ones on Aliexpress are good quality. Paid I think $20 for the set. I am thinking about making bigger purchases to write off for business expenses... Might get the several hundred dollar Burgeon stuff someday... I just have to sell more watches than I buy =/. Yeah, I have damaged both screws and drive tips in the past by being impatient. The blades can be re-shaped. The screw heads, not so much. I use the gloves for my Ebay photography! They are always lying around and I need to just get out of the habit of grabbing them when I work on watches. Keeping deposable gloves close by should help. I think most of these vids were made in early July late June.

    Hi, at 4:50 after you replaced the battery, the seconds hand isn't ticking, then the video cuts to the second hand ticking... what did you do off camera to make the second hand move after the battery replacement?

      ruclips.net/video/zKFAj_x3JAs/видео.html - If you replaced the battery and shorted the all connect pin to the + of the battery and it does not turn on it is possible that the new battery you are using is also dead. Or the watch may just simply not work. I hope this helps.

    Yeah, you just have to get used to using tweezers for everything and youll see you won't ever use the cloths again except for the outside. If you go to 8:39 you will see that you had your carbon tweezers placed almost perfectly for reinstall. This is how I do it actually. Instead of having your tweezers closed open them slightly so you touching the top and side of the battery, this will give you stability as you wedge the battery in place between the neg terminal and the two prongs on top. While you have the battery stable there with the tweezers, take a pair of fine tip brass tweezers with your left hand and insert the closed point of the tweezers into the terminal arm hole to slide it over, thus allowing you to push the battery down with your right hand tweezers. By using the closed tips of the brass tweezers in the terminal hole, you will minimize the chance for any slippage and have more pressure control because you arent "pulling" the arm over, but rather sliding it. Not sure if that makes any sense.......hope it helps

      I understand what you are saying here. I kind of want to pinch the edge of the battery making contact with the top to push down and the edge to push forward. I will certainly practice this! My tweezer are pretty low quality plastic... I need some legit carbon ones with the screw on tips...

    Well done. I know this is an older vid, but just in case you haven't figured it out on your own by now, in my experience on any watch with a screw down crown, it's a good idea to unscrew it when doing a battery change. Reason being it makes it simpler to remove and re-install the plastic centering ring because the movement can shift a bit.

    Glad to see you back.....nice find, that is indeed authentic you are correct. Not that you asked but, my advice.....sell it, if you can make a profit on it. IMO Rolex is an over rated timepiece that is usually found on people who either dont know about watches or they are posers....who dont know anything about watches. I say that not because they arent made well, they are, BUT there are SO many other better watches out there that can be had for the same money or LESS. People dont buy Rolex for their superior function, because they dont function superiorly, people buy Rolex for the name, hence my earlier poser comment. Of all my watches, I only own ONE Rolex and I have owned most over the years. It's the Oysterquartz. That said, being a Rolex, it still has its nuance......I dont know if you will find a quartz watch anywhere as LOUD, which is pretty funny. If you want to keep a Rolex in your collection for "investment", there are only a two you should really consider. The Submariner, or the GMT. So long as Rolex keeps jacking up the prices of new watches, preowned versions should continue to increase in value as well. Lastly, What you have there is not the a fluted bezel, but rather and engine turned bezel. I had one almost identical in the 90's but mine had a tapestry dial and since it was made after 1988 it had the 3135 movement. As for the gloves, PLEASE dont ever wear those things if you are going to be inside of a watch, they are dust and debris magnets. Just stick to cots or rubber gloves. Keep up the good vids👍

      I agree with a lot you are saying here. I don't really see a difference in quality per se in this particular 16030 watch compared to really any modern watch I have with an ETA 2824-2 or 7750 in it. I don't even trust that this Rolex is water resistant(obviously not since I did open it and not replace the gasket yet). I am more concerned with damaging the darn thing than I am appreciating it. I have had it on the wrist since I got it and I am worried about the thing falling off my wrist! I also don't live in the best part of town and robbery is a concern... I did not pay full price for it, it did not "hurt" to own(can sell for a profit now), and I did not buy it for a special occasion. Selling this 1 watch could pay for dozens of other pieces with as much or more character. But for some reason I do like the idea of owning 1 Rolex. I don't know if I am a Rolex guy, nobody really cares about what watch I wear in public anyways. I have 1 Omega(semester quarts form the 70s), 1 Breitling colt(2824-2 from the 90s), 1 Zodiac aerospace jet, one Bulova Calandar(50s), a benrus dirty dozen from WWII, a Seiko Bellmatic(70s), etc. All amazing watches with history and a little desirability. And 10-4 on the gloves comment and the bezel correction. I am going to get some gloves from Cosco to use soon. I appreciate your comment!

      @@JT_Trades_Treasure I hear you, if you can buy a Rolex cheap, it won't diminish your collection by any means, but the question is does it serve a purpose? Sounds like you are into cheap enough, so perhaps you are right, hold onto it for a while and see if it "looses its shine" so to speak. If it does, you can always move it and if you need fast cash you can always move it. That said, just remember that a service from Rolex is likely going to be $800+ since it will require a new crystal and likely a crown in addition to the movement service. You dont have to worry about that now since it's functional, but if it stops, price will drop FAST. As for other watches, you have some decent choice, you didnt even mention your Tag's. I think Tag Heuer is some of the best bang for your buck in the watch game. Well built and their service facility does a great job. I cant tell you how many Tags I have owned over the years, at least a dozen, all autos except for one quartz Aquaracer and none of them disappointments. In fact, I still own the CT5111 and it will keep +/-1sec per day accuracy for 5 years, something NO ROLEX has ever come close to achieving.
