PRS MT15 POWER TUBE SHOOTOUT (5881 & 6l6)
A comparison between JJ5881, Mesa 6L6GC STR440, and Tung Sol 6L6GC STR power tubes in the MT15.
All clips use the same perfomance reamped. All Amp settings remained the same on the amp through out. No post processing on the Guitar tracks. Reamped using the Two Notes Captor and Ownhammer Impulse Response from (r)EVOLUTION Series. OH 412 Trad V30-MB1 L(& R) RIP1 BR impulse recorded into Cubase 10.5 Pro.
Drums are GGD OKW Aggressive Rock.
Bass is Submission Audio Eurobass processed with Aurora DSP Mammoth plugin.

What's your thoughts on running my Mooer 005 EVH styled preamp pedal with a reverb pedal straight into the Mooer tube engine then a cab?
I LOVE my Mooer Tube Engine! Got a Two-Notes Le Clean and Le Lead in front of it.
An MT15 and the MESA tubes run you $810 and sounds better then some $1000-$2000 amps I've heard...
they sound the same but I would rebias the 6l6GC to about 35~37! They sound way more aggressive than the recommended 25~30... it's too cold for me on a 6l6GC

Lol… the 5881 is a 6l6 … just a rugged version designed for military applications…
Except that the 6L6GC is rated for higher wattage.
Yup, and 5881 is shorter in size
Yeah, my guitar tech said that the previous owner of my OG 5150 swapped out the original 6L6 tubes for the 5881s. So the amp is basically 80W now. All he had to do was run the re-bias.
yeah I would rebias the 6l6 yo about 37m... 30 is too cold for 6l6GC, they need to cook hotter!! :D

Thanks for doing this shootout. I’m getting an MT-15 soon and this was reassuring to hear there’s not a dramatic difference between the 5881 and 6L6 tubes.
got mine, love it, played about an hour on it and a power tube crapped out on me. Had to send it back and they sent me a new one. sigh.....
In the isolated tracks the 6l6’s sounded more flubby then the 5881’s… so I think I’m liking the 5881 set! Thanks man!
I like the new set although the 6L6 sounds nice as well.
Liked more the mesa tubes, maybe they cut the mix better due to more mids? Are mesa 6l6?
Yes the Tung Sol and Mesa are 6L6. I really like the mid range growl they bring!
The Mooer Tube Engine is the way to go with any modeler. Its an EXCELLENT tube poweramp.
Is there any difference in connecting the output vs the fx send of the mx5, if you run it into the return of your power amp?
Not sure. I would think it would depend on what your trying to do. It maybe an advantage to do so if you want to go to front of house with an impulse response and send to an amp on stage. Then you can keep the IR or cab sim on as long as the fx loop block is before it. Definitely worth experimenting with for sure!
Hey! Nice..I'm goin to buy one headrush gigrig and this is perfect to me. I have a power amp and 4x12 cabinet. Do you think that sounds great to play metal in a band?
Check out Archspire's "Dr Light Live Shows", they use 8 strings with old ass Line 6 Pod HDs, it's very loud and clear and can handle 8 strings so you should have no worries
Yes absolutely it has been my favorite setup. I really loved the SLO model for metal as well as the bogner. They just added Engl too.
Yeah it is fantastic! the Mesa rectifier and Mark II amp models are great for metal, just depends on your style.
