New SOLAS Regs & FSS Code on Fire Protection of Ro-ro Passenger Ships
New SOLAS Regulations and Fire Safety Systems Code are expected to be adopted in May 2024. The new regulations will soon require ro-ro passenger (aka ro-pax) ships to protect the weather decks with fire detectors and fire monitors.
This presentation describes the new regulations and provides the basics of how to comply with them. It also explains the dangers of weather deck fires on ro-pax ships and the basics of how to effective place fire detectors and remote control fire monitors (aka robotic nozzles). It also covers the main findings, with respect to weather deck fire safety, of the recent 3-year LASH FIRE study funded by the European Union. The LASH FIRE study is the most recent, in-...

    In a real-life installation, the nozzle flows up to 530 gallons (2000 liters) per minute, and automatically shuts off when the fire is extinguished. (Obviously, it's not good to flood the lab to extinguish a bunsen burner for the demonstration😆)

    • @UnifireAB
      @UnifireAB 8 лет назад

      First, try launching a grenade when your skiff is bouncing up and down in the sea and being hit by tons of water per minute. Second, if you are successful, the water cannon can suppress the fire caused by the attack. Would you prefer that the ship burn and have no chance to defend yourself?

    wouldn't an anti pirate torpedo be more effictive?

    • @UnifireAB
      @UnifireAB 8 лет назад

      Perhaps, if you are willing 1) to actually kill people, and 2) you are willing to arm the ship despite legal prohibitions in many territorial waters, and 3) you are willing to spend about $10,000 per voyage for armed guards. This system, however, can be legally mounted world-wide, can dump up to 5 tons of water per minute into a pirate's skiff (boat), blow them off the deck if they manage to get that far, and put out fires on the ship if any are caused by the pirates' attack, and, it saves lives, hopefully. It is true that many ship operators opt for the guns, but many choose this method as superior and preferable for a number of reasons.

    very nice metod, ponte a creer, esos facinerosos van a tratar el problema de los piratas un problema menor, en donde ellos hacer billete. dejando al lado el problema del asunto que es que nadie puede abordar un buque en alta mar, más cuando son DELINCUENTES.

    Simple shoot at cannon get on board.

    • @UnifireAB
      @UnifireAB 8 лет назад

      Not true. Imagine you are a pirate in the choppy water approaching a ship to attack it, bouncing up and down in the skiff, heart racing, 100 meters out. Do you really think you can shoot a tiny motor? No way! Moreover, the system can dump up to 83 kilos (liters) of sea water per second into your skiff, which will slow you down in a heart beat, allowing the victim ship to get away. If you haven't tried it already, go to your fire department and ask if you can please stand in front of a water cannon while they shoot at you, and you can even ask if you may try to shoot its motor. See what happens.

    • @kg4boj
      @kg4boj 7 лет назад

      That thing would mess someone up pretty badly :-) I don't imagine those little skiffs can bail out 5000 liters per minute can they? This system would be perfect to use against greenpeace :-)

    You gonna put out some fires with that thing?

    • @UnifireAB
      @UnifireAB 8 лет назад

      Actually, yes! These robotic nozzles are also used for firefighting around the world. So the system not only provides humane, effective, non-lethal defense, but also serves to fight fires on the ship or other ships in trouble.

  • @mattyelle1

    How does this stop pirates boarding the rear...or 2 pirate boats?

    • @UnifireAB
      @UnifireAB 8 лет назад

      Good question. The water cannons are placed around the ship, about 75-100 meters apart, covering all vulnerable sides of the ship where a pirate might be able to mount the ship. You can operate as many water cannons simultaneously as you want.

  • @ToiletFinger
    @ToiletFinger 11 лет назад

    Looks cool, but an AK-74 is only about $599.99 here in USA. Surely that is a more cost effective solution.

    • @UnifireAB
      @UnifireAB 8 лет назад

      Very true. But carrying arms and weapons on ships is illegal in many territorial waters, and having a crew for shooting would-be pirates at sea is not only risky but also about $10K a pop. The water cannons can dump up to 5 tons of water into a pirate's skiff per minute, filling it with water and making the pirate's boat extremely slow, allowing the victim ship to get away. Protecting yourself without killing is, of course, the best strategy. Many comments advocate killing - but this is just cheap talk. In real life, everyone wants to live and nobody actually wants to kill anyone.

    actually most merchant ships nowadays can take hits from an RPG-7 and not sink. If you start a fire on the ship or blow open enough bulkheads then of course it may sink. I imagine the users of this water cannon might see the guy with the RPG and hopefully surprise him with the cannon so he falls off the skiff and his RPG sinks away. I'd rather risk taking an RPG to my ship than allow it to be boarded

  • @shananagans5
    @shananagans5 12 лет назад

    That is a cool application for that technology but lets face it, a couple of crew members with rifles would be a better deterrent. It's crazy that ships can't defend themselves & can be taken over by a few guys in a little boat. Another example of the bad guys being handed an advantage by laws only the good guys abide by. Good job Unifire but to bad your not allowed to mount a machine gun up there that could be run from the pilothouse.

    • @Dibs1978
      @Dibs1978 3 года назад

      A couple of crew with guns cannot be everywhere. And as soon as they are taken out or frightened away with bullets flying their way, Pirates have the upper hand. This system means the whole ship can be covered by one guy, who is safe;y tucked away. Multi billion dollar industry chooses this method for a reason. It works, reduces risk to crew, and is in the long term much cheaper.
