How to Solder Copper & Silver

been a while.
Yes I know 😁 I’ve been so busy with other projects I can’t even scratch my head. Thank you for watching!
What a timely find. I’m wanting to make copper bracelets with a silver accent so thank you for demonstrating this technique 😊
Thank you Michelle, I’m glad to be of help! 😊
Thank you for your nice information. I have some questions. 1. Can i use a Sapphire instead of Corundum? 2. How often do you need to load diamonds after this first application to the copper disk? 3. Do u use water while you burnishing gems? Thanks.
Yes you can use Sapphire, you also can use hard agate. Once you notice the cutting or polishing is not fast enough you can add a little bit, not too much like the first time. No I don’t use water, your diamond powder is already mixed with oil and that’s enough, if it gets dry you can add a bit more oil. Thanks for watching my videos!
@@ElieGhanimeEG Thank you. My copper lap is on the way from China. When i get it i will use your instractions. Thanks again.
I have never seen nephrite jade take such a glossy surface. It always has an oily surface, at best. If the lapidarist is not very good there will be orange peel.

Sorry for so many questions, Based on the cost of that liquid coating, (Red Coat) $65 from Amazon, or $50ish from ebay, is it not just as practical to use a product like bondo, which is also flexible and paintable which I am only putting over the JB Weld in a thin coat with my finger in the seams I have welded.. Then I will paint the basin..
Don’t worry about the questions, I’m glad to help!
Question: The metal rails that your vice rides on. Are there any bearings involved? How will those rails hold out over time? Thank you.
My rails are 1” steel rods and there’s no bearings in the vice it’s only a slide-fit clearance holes, remember oil will be all over the place lubricating the rails.
@@ElieGhanimeEG Do you think I could get by with 5/8" rods? Thanks, I don't have to worry about drag. You wouldn't believe what saw looked like when I bought it.
@@daultonruff2281 No, don’t cut corners, 1.0” diameter.
@@ElieGhanimeEG Got that - Thank you. Going to be 112 today so think I'll wait to go look at steel. --
I am addressing my vice and the height related to the arbor and blade. I'm about to lower my vice by rebuilding and making the vice lower so a rock will clear the top of the blade. Yours looks just a little high. Is that an illusion? I am here to figure out what paint to use as I am now sealing the welded edges of the tank. I've found out I am a terrible welder and now am using JB Weld to seal it and then I will also use bondo before I paint it. Saw is taking much longer than I envisioned.
Regarding the vice height is based on the washers that holds the blade in position, not the arbor, if you have the base of the vice where the rock will be resting it has to clear the top of the washer otherwise the rock will hit the washer and you’ll have a problem. After using the JB Weld make sure there’s no leaks in the tank. Take your time and don’t rush your work you don’t need any problems once you add the oil in. Good luck!
@@ElieGhanimeEG Thank you for your reply; I took another look at your arbor and saw that you are right. What you said is a big consideration for me right now as I am seriously considering tossing out my whole vice and carriage and trying to make it look more like yours. My vice and carriage weigh about 60 lb, and I don't like how I've adapted for a rail and wheels. I was just out there checking the JB Weld and looking at the vice. I think I'm planning a trip to my steel source to see what they have that I hope won't cost too much. I really am taking my time. A lot more time than I expected. This next payday I'm buying Bondo and am going to put a coat of that on all the seams over the JB Weld. I expect that will make sure there are no leaks. I also need a metal break so I can form a cover over my bearings. Lots of problems to solve in the future. I also am looking at how you put the window into your lid. I will be buying a piece of plexiglass in the future. My old saw had an LED light inside. Also, I powdercoated the basin. Wish I could do that with this one.
@@daultonruff2281 Remember that once it's done it's done so if you have to change the vice do it now same with everything else. The steel prices are gone up now same as everything else. For the window on top I used a rubber seal from the auto parts supplier, based on the size you get you cut the window and the plexiglass , the whole thing is mounted from the top. For the powder coating you might find a company close by that they can do it for you, it will be cheap if you use the color that is most commonly used by them so you have to ask.
I was confused because I did not see you use any solder whatsoever. You are basically melting the items together just at about their melting point. Great idea. I will trying doing your method next time. And awesome third hand would love something like that.
This is called Sweat solder, the solder is already halfway melted under the silver and when you heat the copper the solder will melt on both sides. The third hand is called Hummingbirds and I make them, let me know if you’re interested. Thanks for watching my videos!
@@ElieGhanimeEG Oh I see! That makes better sense now. Thank you for explaining. Yes, "hummingbirds" I did learn something new on this one. Will keep you in mind for it. Cheers!
Thank you for the video! I'm assuming those are rolling mill texture plates? I'd love to trythis, but those things are $40 and up! Yikes!
Thank you for watching my videos and yes I use the rolling mill for that, the plates are expensive but a lot of work goes into them and the material is not cheap anymore, the best place to get them is from Roberta Pihl she’s on Facebook and here’s her website. Oregontrailsilver.com Good luck!

Do you have a materials list used for your build?
I’m sorry Logan I don’t have a material list, I didn’t think about it at the time since I was building only one for myself.
Thank you what other stones could be use for burnishing?
Like I mentioned any hard stone will work or you can use a roller bearing if you have one, don’t use soft stones because you will be grinding the stone at the same time and you don’t want that. Thank you for watching my videos!!

Will riveting a .925 sterling silver pendant (1 mm thick, from a necklace) to thin strip of stainless steel (less than 1 mm), likely cause the pendant to split? This is for a thin, steel cuff style bracelet I’m wanting to design/build. Thank you, great video!!
As I understand the Pendant has no stone in it yet, then it’s okay to rivet both together. Make sure the rivet pin is not too long, also you can practice on some scrap pieces to get the feel of it. Thank you for watching my videos.
No stone in the pendant, no, but it does have a raised emblem which is in bronze. Pendant is .925 silver though. Thank you!! I’ll try to add a photo of it below
Thank you…very informative! I know it is a subjective question, but approximately how long does the charge last before having to re-apply? So for say a 8000k pre polish, how many stones of around a carat size would I expect to be able to polish? Regards…
Hello Petro, I don’t know how long it will take before recharging the lap I didn’t keep track of that but I know it will take quite some time before recharging again. Thank you for watching my videos.
@@ElieGhanimeEG 🙂 Thanks Elie!
sorry 1 more questions ahah, I just received my copper lap and did what you said, it works very well, I used 220 grit for preforming, I can't believe how fast it's eating the stone. Since we are not running water on it how do we manage swarf? should I run a paper towel on the lap after every facet? the grit being big it's shredding the paper towell and grabbing some all over.
I’m glad it worked for you, but way you’re not using the water drip? You have to use it in order to keep the lap clean, the other way you can do is use a wet sponge over the lap and clamped on the side so it stays in place, however, I like the water drip better. Good luck!
@@ElieGhanimeEG oh, I will then, I was under the impression that using the water drip with diamond powder/paste was forbidden, thanks
I didn’t know you’re using diamond paste, I thought you’re using diamond powder which is permanent on the surface, then you’ll need to use water drip, if you’re using diamond paste then you need to clean the stones not the lap with a paper towel, make sure you don’t use the same paper on another diamond grit and when you’re changing grits make sure you wash the stone with alcohol.
Hi Elie. I'm not financially ready for a rolling mill yet, so this was wonderful video to stumble upon. Thank you! I'm just wondering about your hammer. I have my shopping cart open (no Harbor Freight here in Canada), but I am faced with quite a few choices of Delrin/Nylon non-marring hammers. They range from a 1" to 1.5" face. I'm assuming a larger face is better; is it? They range from 7 oz to 18 oz., but I see in another comment you recommended not to get an overly heavy one as you have less control (but, my naive logic tells me heavier would be better). Any advice for me? I'm likely overthinking it. I just want the best results without a mill. Thanks in advance!
Hello Queen, in Canada you have Princess Auto is the same as Harbor Freight here. However, the one with 1.5” face should be better, for the weight you can get it somewhere in the middle around 10 oz should be okay and whatever you do don’t hit your fingers 😁. Thank you for watching my videos and don’t forget to subscribe! Have a wonderful Easter.
@@ElieGhanimeEG Thanks so much for the info! The tip about Princess Auto is a great one! I had no idea. I hear about Harbor Freight all the time and wished that we had one. I guess we do! (just subscribed!)
@@Queen_Street_Sterling, it helps to be Canadian 😊
is it important that the scotch brite is the non scratch version?
The Scotch Brite I use is the one that used to clean pans and dishes and you can get it from anywhere, I’m not sure about the scratch version but I don’t think it will matter much.
Good!
Thanks!
What stones do you polish on tbe copper lap? Are you using both sides with different diamond?
I use the copper lap only for faceting, you can divide the surface into two sections and use two different grits of diamonds, make sure there’s no contamination when changing from one surface to the other by washing the stone first.
Just to let your viewer know, graves facetting is not doing business anymore.
Thank you 🙏 it’s an excellent video .. very helpful 👏👏👏
Thank you Nasr for watching, I’m glad to be of help!
My lapidary club made one of these. It's one of several vices we have, but I didn't understand how it worked. I came across this video when searching for methods for clamping irregular rocks. Thanks for making this! I can't wait to try it.
Thanks for watching my videos and I’m glad it did help you, I hope you can share the video with the other members of the your club so they can learn how to use it properly and if anyone would like to have one they can message me. Thanks again and I hope you cut some beautiful slabs!
Measuring the inside of a hole I could use a further explanation, because I could not see the numbers for that measurement.
Dalen, I don’t understand how you can’t see the numbers, it’s the same as if you’re measure an outside dimension, the only thing that is different is for an outside dimension you use the long front part of the caliper, when you measure an inside dimension like a hole, you use the opposite side of the caliper, the two pointed sides.
I will take a closer look again, but my eyesight is not what it was before my cataract operation. Thank you for the other explanations in your presentation.@@ElieGhanimeEG

What is the RPM of your polishing wheel (flat lap)? It looks so much higher than what I use. Also, how do you remove cerium oxide from small cracks? Thanks!
I don’t know exactly the RPM but I know it’s high than what I want. However, as long as you don’t overheat the stone by pressing too hard or staying too long, it works fine. To remove the cerium oxide from small cracks you can use a toothbrush with soap and water….Thanks for watching my videos.
Hammer with wood?
Sand paper the tiny wire rivet?
After both sides are upset, you don’t need the divet in your brass surface, right? Looks like you are using sone strong blows. More than a tippy tap like a 2 oz jewrlry riveting hammer
Yes and yes 😊 get yourself a nice hammer to do the job.
How did you make a rivet in brass to hold the river head?
I had a brass rod, I measured the diameter and I picked up the right size drill, the rivet should be slide fit.
By a riveting tool you made, domed inside like a mail setter?
Yes they are domed inside, I made them on the lathe but you can grind the tip to dome it…I think you meant like a nail setter, I’m not sure you can get a nail setter big enough to use but you can try.
Do you have photos of this piece? It’s really beautiful 💕🤗💞
