it's a reference to a nursery rhyme, "mary, mary, quite contrary."
For some reason, the fact that the start of the song 'oh mary, contrary' is from a children's nursery rhyme always stuck with me, still easily my favorite part

Mary Contrary to me is a nickname Mary got in the book The Secret Garden and this song reminds me of that book
The rhyme was "Mistress Mary, Quite Contrary, How does your garden grow? With Silver Bell's And Cockle Shells And Maids All Lined Up In A Row" Or something like that I read the book like a month ago or so after finding it and now I've remembered some of the rhyme

why isnt there a flowertale?
the au works best in underfell, imo. it's a story about frisk being a beacon of kindness in a world that hates them and refusing to fight, even if it means dying over and over again, making a friend despite it all, and eventually sacrificing themself to free the underground. the monsters in underfell being so much more cruel than the monsters in undertale makes it more impactful.
