Thanks for the video. I am planning on being on this section of the D&L trail in August.... rain or shine. It is going to be a challenge for me. 48+ miles will be the longest I have ridden a bike in one day. An all day event planned... expect to take 6-8 hours depending on how many stops I take.... will probably take more on return ride for photos and videos pauses. I hiked from Glen Okeno to M&K Jct. a few years ago in the fall. Perhaps I will be fortunate and see a train on those tracks that are beside the trail.... lol.

There are excursion trains that leave Jim Thorpe on a regular basis but I don't know where you would find a schedule. The return trip was actually harder than I anticipated - more rise than I thought! So, yeah, give yourself some time.

I think many people confuse the isolated life Merton lived with the Isolationism he was writing about here. Other writings tell of how he struggled against this always himself. He admitted he had an incredible ego that he finally realized he had to battle with. His gifted intellect appears to have aided in causing his ego to grow. He noted however the beginnings of even an indifference or cruelty that gets excused in children when he was 6yrs old and his mother was in the hospital that he could not visit but he would be out playing, and even when his father came home and said she died and left him a letter, soon after reading it he just wanted to go out and play with his friends and he did not want to think about her. He also had a younger brother whom he would not let play with him and his friends even though he would cry, and one time they all threw rocks at him when he tried to follow them. Later while battling his ego in this isolation he experienced terrible remorse for what he did. His brother died being shot down in Air Force in WWll and he wrote a beautiful poem to him that many Catholic Priests and other Catholics today read at wakes or funerals for their family members. When He first became a Catholic and read about St Therese of Lisieux he judged her immediately using his intellect, and sharply criticized her and the category of French Bourgeoisie Society that she was raised in! Eventually however, he recanted everything he had criticised her. He even wrote about that which was a rebuke of his own self and attitude of Superiority. He prayed to her for guidance while on the Campus of the Bonaventure University as to whether he should enter the Abbey of Gethsemani, and at that moment the Church bells sounded that he took as his answer and left his teaching position there soon after, spending the rest of his life at Gethsemani 27yrs. He wrote of a funny story about one of the Sisters of Therese confronting an official at the Vatican because she had painted a portrait of Therese but people were all choosing to use the black and white photos of her with her writings, and the Official told her not to worry because she would still get into heaven despite her bad Art!!! She somehow had convinced herself that her portrait was a better representation than the real life photos!!!

Starting at 1min when you see cows Fr Merton goes into why Jesus Christ was the perfect sacrifice replacing animal sacrifices. The high Priest Annas at the time of Jesus's arrest even spoke by Dvine inspiration to the Jewish crowd that it would be to the benefit of the entire nation that one man be sacrificed for them! Adam was originally perfect but lost it for everyone. Therefore only another perfect man could replace for everyone what Adam lost. Jesus was the perfect equivalent. (John 3:16).

I would think that, though there may be similarities between contemplation and Zen or other Eastern spiritual practices, they are only similarities and not simply variants of some essential truth. If they were, there would have been no reason for Christ to proclaim, "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." For if faith and love should be lacking from one's spiritual practice, the essential, vital ingredient is missing; it is no longer Christian, but man working alone.

One of the guys had a solo and he choked. My brother stepped up and did the solo, but the song was ruined by then. No deal on the Hootenanny appearance. My brother and his friends are all gone now, but I have never lost my love of folk music. Hootenanny was great…while it lasted.

Thomas Merton eventually professed to love all and be sharing in their sorrows and joys but as far as I have read of him so far, he did not directly write anything about the plight of the labeled mentally ill/persons with psychosocial Disabilities. Therefore they cannot be included in here because one person at least (myself) has stepped in as better qualified to express lived experience being so labeled. I have recently been surprised to find a recent article issued by the Federal Govt actually admitting their own part in hemming the labeled mentally ill into no other choice but to isolate themselves! The article admonished the general public that they should be following suit, but they are not and likely will not, actually due for the most part to the role of Clergymen/women who wholeheartedly support and continue encouraging the public to support the Satanic System of Mental Health. Behind the Clergypersons are wealthy private individuals, corporations, and pseudo public politicians tugging on their puppet strings. Merton did some volunteer work in Harlem before he entered Gethsemani. He did gain experience being in the heart of the Ghetto in 1930s but it was still only from a white perspective and he was not trapped there, he could leave whenever he wanted. He never ventured into a mental institution, and as far as I know he was afraid to even think about them and those confined to them. He was relieved when he learned that his father would die soon from a brain tumor and that it was not insanity because he could not bear the thought of his father wasting away in a snake pit mental institution. That may be why he did no writing on the subject. He just could not bear it. It is wrong of the public today to lump them solely into the category of the poor. Even though many of them are, many of them are not, and still cannot get housing because of stigma discrimination, and there are many other ways that prejudice and persecution of them is very different from the poor or any other category with these problems. This is what the article by the Federal Govt was admitting. Someone in the Govt did not wait for the future to say: What! I don't know? I didn't know anything about it?
