While I can understand where Coach Cole is coming from, HBCU are suppose to be a place where black people are accepted for who we are and not by the standards force upon us by outside groups. The professionalism standard of our hair was not something that we establish ourselves, but was thus on us by our ancestors enslavers through laws (in some places there was actually laws about our hair), indoctrination, vilify our hair when it is in its' natural state, and other methods over centuries. There is a reason why many states are passing anti-discrimination laws based on our natural hair and hair styles, the Crown Act (ironically enough a state that does not even 10 percent state black population). The fact that our men and women was and are using harmful chemicals in our hair in order to meet European standards is crazy and shows how deep rooted the attack on black hair is. At some point, we have to change the narrative of what should pass for professional hair style among our people and typically when our people have takings stands it has involved HBCUs and our organizations\churches. To me there should be compromise with the length for safety concerns and make sure the hair is well kept when it comes to hair from Coach's prospective. If not, then the reality people can say and they would be right that you are upholding the same standards that is based in anti-black racism. Technically speaking if Coach was the coach in a state that does have the Crown Act, which I believe the state of Texas does, he could face a lawsuit under the Crown Act of that state. It would be a shame that if a black person would have to sue an HBCU and another black person for anti-black discrimination, but at some point someone might take that stand against Coach Cole or any other coach (if he tried to have his policy at an HBCU). We have already seen young black people and their families take a stand against others over our hair. We have already seen lawsuits against a wrestling referee (who went against school system policy in the first place), coaches in baseball, and high schools.

I agree that for all of Valley's sports, they need a head coach like a L. C. Cole. Valley's football coach needs someone that needs to recruit (1) the best MS, West AR, NE LA & Memphis HS players that are a second slower, half inch too short, etc.. to go to bigger schools; and (2) the best MS JUCO players that can't go to the bigger schools and (3) a few Portal kids that have realized they can't play were they thought they could but are discipline enough to come be key players to help flip a Valley into a serious opponent week end and week out. There are some really good football players that aren't 3 to 5 star players in that region. So, a Coach Cole who has the name, the contacts and most likely the knowledge to find the kids that are getting overlooked or that are going where they aren't going to play. He has the experience to build in a program that isn't loaded with money, but can generate alumni and community interest to start putting money into the program. I don't know what the basketball talent is in those same areas are today, but I bet the same can be applied for a coaching for the basketball teams, baseball and softball, track and field, etc.. I'm from a small town MS HS. There was really good talent all throughout MS including my SW MS region, which is where TC Taylor and several other really good to great players came from. But very few were seen as players Ole Miss, Miss State, LSU, etc.. wanted. So, they exceled at JSU, Alcorn, Valley and Grambling. JSU and Alcorn have returned to recruiting these kids among others that they pull from other states (TX, GA, FL, LA, etc..). But, that needs to be Valley concentrated regions with a really good recruiter that is seasoned at putting together a good coaching staff mixed with veterans and young coaches. Valley can be a lot more competitive in every sport, but they have to hire the right coaches for 'them' to succeed.

Hampton coach has been made the head coach, as they dropped the interim label about half way through the season. The grants and other money that North Carolina A&T State University is getting is for academics and not for athletics (while the AD did say they are going to scale back the campaign for additional funds and instead of trying to raise 100 million all at one., they are going to start off with around a 20 million campaign). While I don't think it is a money problem with A&T doing well in the CAA in football, as the other sports are doing better almost across the board. I think it just a bad coaching hire, as too much was made about having CAA experience rather getting someone that could build on what A&T already had. As far as A&T move to the Big South then to CAA it was driven in part due to money. During the most recent town hall meeting, the AD mention how much they was getting from the MEAC and what they are not getting in the CAA (which includes having the ability to do local media rights deals). I think the problem with the MEAC is that they need to improve how they do business, as you can't expect schools to stay in your conference just based on being a HBCU. The fact that MEAC tried to add Chicago State to the conference, without providing additional revenue to the school to counter act the increase in travel and the splitting of conference payout was not logical.

Black Americans aren't monolithic, but certain Black Americans sure expect Black Americans to be monolithic by having them vote solely for any fool Democratic Party every election. Voting Black Americans have been voting overwhelmingly for any fool Democratic Party every election since 1936 when the Democratic Party were using their illegally created Jim Crow Laws to actually put their feet up Black Americans a_ _es. Rocky, with your daughter at PV and hearing you say you have family that went to other HBCUs like Southern, it surprised me that you had never been to an HBCU Homecoming. I'm glad you came to SU and it looked like from the broadcast that you fit right in and had a good time. Even walking around is a different experience than riding around, because you get more engagement with more people. I was glad you said you are going to PV. I know a ton of PV alums that are all either already their with their pre-ordered RVs or are headed down tonight to join others. I love that you said you are going to not compare. From what I have seen over the years, each Homecoming takes on the tradition of its campus and culture of its city (location of campus). So, they are all different, while all being a valued flavor of our people. Think of it like being in Jamica, then Puerto Rico and then Brazil. All different but fun with and among our people. I hate I couldn't get on campus early enough to come by the live and that I didn't run into you all afterwards. But, I passed by you all in my car while you, Scottay, Mrs Script and Perry were riding on the cart. 😎

But FAMU trying to rewrite a narrative that they controlled the game or led the game is asinine. And i stand by, JSU is the most complete team in HBCU football period. If we went head to head in a series we would win 4 or 5 out of 7. It wasnt just your coaching, you also dont have the same caliber of personell. All that recruitment trail talk preseason didnt equate to what im seeing on the field.

The Black population is big and thus not everyone was into the 2 Live Crew and such back in the day, so saying that everyone was into that scene is not being factual. At the end of the day people are going to dress like they want to dress, unless there is some type of dress code in place. I know that some HBCUs have put in dress codes and actually enforce them and thus you can finds those HBCUs or watch the event from home using an online platform. Not everyone make decisions on their education based on success in athletics, as the purpose of the schools is to educate our people first and foremost. While their winning in football did help raise the profile for NC A&T State University, they were going to expand regardless of athletics based on their offering of academic programs.

I think there was mistakes on both sides of the situation with Coach Prime. The fact that Coach Prime got JSU, the SWAC, and himself sued by SHC, shows that Coach Prime made some mistakes too. The other thing that rub some people the wrong way about Coach Prime was him stating things that was not true about HBCUs in general because he did not know the general history of HBCUs and did not understand the political landscape of Mississippi (compared that to Eddie George at TSU, who educated himself on the situation at TSU and funding). Other example: the water situation was the direct result of the state returning federal funds to the federal government for decades that should of been used for for the up keep of the water plant in Jackson (keep in mind the time of not taking care of the plant correspond to the time frame of when Jackson was became majority black). The federal lawsuit by the state NAACP, provided that in court, which result in the federal take over of the water plant. The state reaction to this, is for them to continue to try to pass laws to try take back over the management of the plant. Coach Prime should be given credit for what he actually did, but at the same time both sides should learn for the mistakes that was done and move forward (no need for any harsh words to the media or through 3rd parties).

It’s very frustrating to listen to people who really don’t understand but criticizing Deion & ED negatively not fully understanding what they bring to the table, but all HBCU programs still struggling financially do terrible business deals and everything all right! Need younger people running things with new ideas on how to generate money and promote the HBCU brand! Deion turned JSU out as far as the brand generating corporate sponsorship, when was the last time a HBCU team flew to every game? Deion got that airplane deal, had Deion working overtime to get sponsorships when the administration should already been on that, advancing things instead of sticking with the old guard keep doing things the outdated way!

Having younger people may not be the answer, as having the right people in place is better regardless of age. For the most part, the structure of sports revenue has always been some type of split between the athletic department and the general fund at the majority of the HBCUs (as HBCUs are schools first and athletics is just an added piece). If you look at the beginning of the start of sports it was the general fund that was supporting athletics for the longest time (a vast majority of HBCUs started after the civil war between 1865 to the early 1900s). I do say that the split between the general fund and athletics needs to be looked at and adjusted based on the money generated by the athletic programs (not all HBCUs football programs generate enough revenue to support themselves, even if they are given 100 percent of what they make). I think Coach Oliver, at NCCU, express that the football program should not have a problem giving to the general fund, as the athletics do use resources as the school, and helping to support other sports, but football can't be the main engine to fund other things. As for NDSU, for example, they had 7.6 million deficit and had to cut academic programs in 2023, so it not like NDSU as whole is successful as some people make them out to be. The funding of the football and other sports took time to build, as it was not something that was establish over night. I think far too often people expect a quick turn around, which in most cases is not going to happen.

When teams play in the playoffs including division 2 non of them get past the first round!
