My Rural Japanese Town (The JET Program)
Welcome to Ishikawa Town in Fukushima Prefecture!
This is part 1 of a mini series tour through my placement for the JET program. It`s quite rural and it`ll give you a good idea of the kind place you`ll likely be placed in if you end up on the JET program.
What else would you like me to make a video about? Comment below!
I also decided (unlike what I say at the end of the video) to not start a patreon yet. If you`d like to support me though, you can use the paypal link below!

Ahh you like Jizue and Mouse on the keys, a man of culture. I love your covers dude, keep it up :D All my respect for your granddad 🫡, may he rest in peace.
Thanks so much for the compliment. Sounds like you’re a man of culture as well 😄. Will keep on grinding.
Found this last night (the night before my interview) and it helped immensely. Sending you good vibes sir🙏
Part two? Your videos are so genuine and you have a cute personality! I really enjoy your content keep it up!
Wow this is some of the best information I’ve seen out there, thanks for sharing your experience and going in depth as to why you answered the way you did!
HELLO Mr.Dennis i'm ishikawa junior high school student. I love you
Thank you very much!! See you again 😁
すごい!
I find it funny how I watched your video on interviews and now I'm also placed in Fukushima-Ken with JET
Oh wow congrats! Where in Fukushima have you been placed?
Did you bring those drums from your home country? If so, how was your experience moving something so large?
I bought them all at a second hand store in Japan. Would have been super expensive and a huge pain if I brought them from overseas.
Part 2 🙏
Will upload soon!
Tight!!!!!!
Glad you think so! Thanks for watching.
Thank you for this! Interview is tomorrow morning...fingers crossed
Good luck!!
Why do I consistently hear Tom Cruise's voice while watching your video?! it was wild, I was waiting to hear "talk to me Goose" hah Fun set up for $350/month. is this via the offerings w/ the company or 1 you found on your own?
Hahahaha you’re not the first person who said I sound like Tom Cruise XD. I take it as a compliment. 😁 My apartment found the apartment! They originally gave me a couple to choose from and listened to my preferences when searching for apartments.
Lol i Lived that life 5y ago, so much peace that gets you thinking huh
Hahahaha yes but maybe too much thinking XD. Throwback to Okinawa 😍
Woaa! You live in a Mansion! Can’t believe how much space you have. Love the drum tips, we once tried to practice in our apartment in the UK, drummer used an electric drum kit, we ran everything into a desk and then each had a headphone mix, it was genius! But… neighbours upstairs complained after 5 minutes, apparently the bass drum thud was being heard upstairs.
Omg that sucks to hear about the neighbour upstairs, especially after how hard you tried to keep it quiet. The bass drum seems to be the thing that annoys the neighbours. If you can find a way to muffle the bass drum, you shouldn`t have any more complaints.
@@dennissullivandrum5943 yeh, we cut off the drummers foot, seemed to have done the trick 🤪🤣🤣🤦♂️
How are you, I was your student at English conversation class in Hokuto City , I am Mr.Kameyasfriend, My family name is 「Thousand field 」Please stay healthy and do your best
Thank you for your message! I hope you stay healthy and do your best as well.
Considering applying to Jet from Japan if I get into Interac but not Jet. How was the transition? Did you have to send documents to the Japanese embassy back home, what about references etc?
Yep I had to do the same documentation and application as people who are applying from their home country. I had to mail some things from Japan to my home embassy, but the embassy was understanding with any delays or issues. Other than that, the transition was very smooth since the JET program took care of most of the visa/filing behind the scenes.
@@dennissullivandrum5943 sounds great! Thanks for the quick reply, loved your recent video! 👍🏻
@@bobfranklin2572Aaaaaay thanks for watching my recent video! Always happy to help with any other questions. :D
hello i had you teach me english
You would be a perfect game show host.
Hehe maybe I’ll look into route 😁
@8:19 its because in Japan they bathe on a stool sitting down.
How did you switch from Interac to JET while in Japan?
I applied through the Jet program USA branch as a US citizen. You can apply to JET even if you`re already living in Japan (though some countries restrict you if you`ve already been in the country for a certain number of years). The only pain about applying from Japan is that you would still have to go back to your home country for the in person interview. I got to do my interview online though thanks to the pandemic. So it was pretty easy for me to switch to JET.
This is awesome!
I`m glad you enjoyed the video! 見てくださってありがとうございました!
Wishing you the best! I hope i get selected as well for 2023 next year!
I hope so too!!
Wow that's crazily cheap! I've just moved to a town near Kyoto (much delayed UK JET participant - we finally got here last week), my rent is 10x that ahha 😅 It's very much a "every situation is different" kinda thing - seems that JETs in more rural areas are more likely to get a subsidised apartment, whereas those of us in larger towns or cities (where rent is more expensive anyways ahha) have to pay the full price! Your place is really big and we'll kitted out too, looks great 😍 My town is really lovely though and the rent is still half what I paid before in the UK, so I can't complain too much!
Congrats on being placed near Kyoto. The Kansai region is a fun part of the country to be placed in! I studied abroad in Hirakata City, which is just south of Kyoto. You`re right, every situation is different! There`s a private school JET in the same town as me who doesn`t get subsidized rent. So everyone will have a different experience on this program.
@@dennissullivandrum5943 thanks! Yep, so happy with my placement location 🥰
Hi. Is it easy to be a permanent resident as an English teacher? Thanks!
Yes it is! I`ve seen many people here make a life long career out of teaching English. If teaching English is your passion, then you can be set for life here!
@@dennissullivandrum5943 wow 😲😲😲 i became more inspired and persevering because of u 😁😁😁
And here I am smack in the middle of Tokyo paying way more money to be fair it is still much cheaper then my old apartment in New York like thousands of dollars cheaper idk 58 dollars sounds like a steal also I’m not in the jet program Mabye that has to do with how expensive my rent is😅
Unfortunately from what I`ve heard, most JETs in Tokyo don`t get subsidized rent either. So living in Tokyo is expensive no matter what. :(
Kind of crazy how similar our interviews went. I had the teaching background questions too! Nervous for my results next month
I hope you get in man!!
@@dennissullivandrum5943 Thank you man! I just got short-listed from the UK! looking forward to a new adventure.
@@HCadrenaline Aaaaaaaay congratulations! You`re about to have one long and crazy adventure. I`ll see you over here.
Hopefully going to Japan for interac by April.. Kanto North. Hope it's fun! Didn't know you could do JET after interac. How was that?
Yep you can apply to JET from within Japan! The only downside is that they usually require you to go back to the US for the JET interview at one of the consulates. I got to do my interview via zoom though because of the pandemic, so it all worked out for me! :D
I'm sure that charm was lovely the first 27 times you heard it.
Hahaha yep, only had to hear it 1,000 more times after. They played it at noon everyday as well!! 😱
When did you arrive?
3 1/2 years ago!
Very appreciative to you and other JET ALTs who are putting this information out there for others to study and be able to succeed in trying to get into the program.
Thanks you so much! I really appreciate you watching this video. I hope this video can help a lot of people who are hoping to get into the program.
wow $58...what a deal lol
Agreed!!
Ty for the tips Jim Carry! Love your vibe.
You`re welcome! I hope this helped.
2:23 I'm surprised, very energetic and respectful : -o
4:16 using a phone, you will need extra light inside, a simple one will give way better quality if you want it.
OHHH, I see, it's a lighting issue. Literally buy a desk lamp and point it at your face, drop a white t shirt over it to soften the light if needed, and you'll get clearer video.
1:10 did you film this part with a microwave? Anyway, thanks for making content, keep it up.
What does that even mean? 😂😂
Glad you’re enjoying the content in the meantime 😁
@@dennissullivandrum5943 means it's poor quality, lol.
@@dennissullivandrum5943 Yes, and I look forward to the next video
What kind of Japanese level do you have? How did you learn/are learning?
Japanese Level wise: Conversational and am working on full fluency. Learning wise: First I took college courses, then I did a self-study course called Kumon, now I`m learning by making flashcards from native material (NHK news, Japanese youtubers, real life conversations, etc.). Now I`m learning/using "real japanese" thanks to the native material. Important Note! It`s easy to plateau with Japanese, even if you live in the country. So keep raising the bar for yourself!
As usual, band love doesn't seem to disappear :)
Very informative and great to watch Dennis. I too am thinking about applying with Interac and am a songwriter musician that plays drums so this was cool to see! I guess all I’m concerned with is, 1. Do you get a choice where you go in Japan to work? And 2. How much help is there financially and hopefully these important things are laid out before leaving your home country? All the best!
Thanks for watching my video! With Interac, they will ask you on your application if you have a preference for where you would like to be placed. After you`re hired, you can negotiate a bit about your location preference and they will do the best they can to accommodate you. In regards to financial help, Interac recommends you save up at least $5000 before you move to Japan, but they offer loans if you can`t bring that much over and need some financial help while you get settled in. Hope this helps!
@@dennissullivandrum5943 Thank you very much Dennis! You’re response is of great help as these were some of the things I was unsure of. Thanks again and Wishing you a Merry Christmas!

Incredible playing and a beautiful tribute to your granddad
I appreciate the compliment!! Hopefully my grandfather smiled down on me when he watched his tribute.
OK, where do you do your laundry? Is there a set up outside one of your windows that allows you to dry your clothing at home? What is the view from those windows?
I usually hang my clothes next to the heater in my apartment. I don’t need to hang them outside, they dry up quick year round inside. The view from those windows is…..the next houses wall. 😂 Guess you can’t have everything with this low price. 🤷🏼♂️
The little chime is a way of saying "Your overwork begins NOW."
Hahahaha you know this culture too well. 😅
Dennis - cool video. This is your 2nd cousin David. My dad would be your Great Uncle Donald. Aunt Sheila was just hear for a visit and told us about you being in Japan. When you get back to the states you should plan to come see us. Would love to see you swap stories with you about family and visits to Seaside. Be safe in your travels and please tell your Dad hello for me!
Now that you are leaving, how do you move your drums?
I had a moving company pack up my drums for me. I had so much stuff to move that I needed a moving company anyway.
Yeah, this is a great apartment! Imagine 5' tall me trying to use those kitchen cabinets........ You made great use of your space and can't wait to see what you will do with your next one! Also, as much as I love baths, F that heating bill!!
Dinnis sensei .I had a lot of fun listening to the description of your apartment in Hokuto. Please tell me about the room and your life in Fukushima. I will continue to listen to your wonderful drum performances. I wish all the best.
Thank you so much!! I’m glad you enjoyed my video. I will continue to post soon.
I've slept on those layers beneath the drums, can confirm they're great
I agree! Very comfortable.

Your energy is infectious, dude! This is such a crazy fun song, and seeing somebody groove out having a blast makes you wanna smile and airdrum at your desk along with them
Thanks so much bro! I’m glad you felt the energy. I’ll be posting more stuff soon!
