I love a lot of Tolkien's world building, I just wish he would cut down on the number of bad guys that sound the same

Paleomythic: A Roleplaying Game of Stone and Sorcery Review
Great game. More approachable that the first edition with the exception of Journeys which is too simplistic.
Thanks for the review. Are beginning characters squishy as they are in regular OSR?
You do know it's entirely okay to dislike North America. They are the villain's of the planet.
This looks nothing like the new and online space game SpaceAces.
Free League did a great job capturing the look and feel of Middle Earth. Sadly, however, the mechanics are clunky and totally get in the way. So I just convert the adventures to another system that's actually fun to play.
I thought of getting an rpg as a gift for a friend. Was looking for one that wasn't concerned with killing, or death. I guess I need to carry on looking.
Another cool vid
The game is very well done and keeps your characters grounded in a way many ttrpgs fail to do. The mechanics of Journeys makes you slightly nervous about that long trek to Bree or Rivendell. The everpresent Shadow mechanic provides a looming danger over your entire Fellowship. And the game's focus on Wisdom, Valour, and the Fellowship itself provides that small but bright light of hope for the players.
keep it up!
Great review! So funny that this came out right as I'm in the middle of rewatching lord of the rings!!!
I enjoy all of your reviews very much! Also your mousy collar top is super cute!
There is a nice solo mode available, Strider.
Thank You for another great review Lexi. 😊
I played the 1st edition & didn't care for it. Felt very videogame-like. Especially when it came to combat. But I'm tempted by this second edition, which seems like it may have leaned away from the elements I didn't like. The art is fantastic.
Thanks Lexi! I'm hoping I get the chance to play this soon
Thanks for the review! I've got the game in a bundle, but I don't think I'll ever run it. The Tolkien's world is way too well-known and complex, so I feel it's easy to make a mistake! For the same reason I avoid placing a game in Forgotten Realms. There's just way too much homework to do as a GM.
Remember that The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings are Bilbo's and Frodo's (respectively) travelogues. There's nothing to say that they didn't see everything, might have had things mixed up, or invented stuff whole-cloth. If you're the Loremaster for a The One Ring game, what you say is correct, at least for our tale. I wouldn't worry about a strict adherence to 'continuity', especially as Tolkien kept revising the story almost to his dying day.
Good review of an excellent game
Thank you for the review! I am very intrigued by this game but haven't bought it yet, because I do feel Tolkien's work is almost impossible to gamify and fear it might suffer greatly from being gamified.... BUT this game does seem to do a pretty good job at it, and now that they're coming out with that new elvish supplement, I find myself even more intrigued xD
Thank you so much for this wonderful review, I'm happy you enjoyed my game! Keep up the great work!
Tech fish planet. All the fish have taken over the land on their world in unique and weird "water suits" that allow them to wander the land above their world.
Consider it added to the list for a future update. =)
My favorite sci-fi RPG ever.
The planet I would visit would be the planet of naps!
This looks like a ton of fun. Also, I gave a sensible chuckle when I saw your T-shirt.
A good review. I think there's still a simple BRP booklet available that introduces the basic mechanics and concepts of the game. That would probably be helpful for new players. For anyone curious, the various power systems were all imported from previous BRP games - thus the two magic systems. Magic comes from the Magic World supplement from the old Worlds of Wonder box set (not the current Magic World game) which was probably the first multigenre game. Superpowers likewise come from the Super World supplement from WoW. Sorcery was imported from Elric/Stormbringer. I'm not sure where Mutant and Psychic powers came from but my guess is that the former came from Hawkmoon and the latter from Elfquest.
Thank You for the review and look at this game Lexi. 😊
Thanks for the review Lexi! You are a gem. =)
Gday Lexi. I enjoy your reviews. Please keep up these videos. Would like to see you (and your group) do some play throughs or even solo play.
Thanks for the review! Sounds like a fun game (although I'm not sure I'll play it, I have way too many games I want to play first).
Great video!
As an American, I'd be weirdly receptive to "Let's let a magic deer decide who gets to be in charge."
While I love the Blue Rose game (and I was a backer when 2e was kickstarted), I'd say it is not without flaws. For setting, I'd say it suffers from Excessive Cartography Syndrome, the Aldea is a vast terrain where people live in harmony etcetera, in other words, it's boring as ***, until you want some dystopia or trouble in paradise tropes sprinkled in. If you play by the book, the interesting things happen between the lines -- on the borderlands, some forgotten villages and places not on the map and such. Studying official published scenarios helps a lot with overcoming that "feel good but boring" thing, but I'd be glad if more of that would be in the main book, instead of weird musings like playing on the colony on literal Mars (yes, there is such an option in the book, cool, but it should be in some supplement IMAO). The main problem is with AGE system. Don't get me wrong, AGE is a solid system, but even with simplifications (like abstracting weapons into categories) and setting-specific additions (like passions, destiny, fate and relationships) it hardly works as swashbuckling romantic fantasy mechanic. And this is a problem of all editions of the game. First was published with heavy-modified D&D 3e ruleset that bloomed into somewhat obscure True20 system. Second was this AGE version -- and AGE is a child of True20 and CRPG mechanics of first Dragon Age game, and it was created for Dragon Age TTRPG (and it works much much better in that setting). Third version is called "Adventures in Aldea" and it is 5e setting book. In other words, all versions of Blue Rose are using D&D-derived mechanics, which hardly works for the climate and genre. It is even more problematic with the assumed framework of Queen's Envoys (a clone of Queen's Heralds from Margaret Lackley's series) who are supposed to be competent and highly trained agents of the Aldean government... but they start at first level. But, the most frustrating element of AGE are stunts. Actually, I think it is quite misleading name. In most systems I know, "a stunt" is a mechanic that allows players to describe some cool action and either make it easier, or actually possible to do, or give such a risky action some clear mechanical benefit, but for increased risk something will go off. In AGE a stunt is something that... happens randomly and gives a random mechanical benefit. And there are mechanics like that in other games, but it is not stunt mechanic. It is advantage mechanics, which probably started with old, venerable D6 system and now it is sprinkled around a lot of games, usually those with more cinematic feel like Genesys or Storypath. It is not about stunts, because the essence of stunt is, the player wants their character to do something flashy or cool. Not they want to bash an enemy on the head or get a discount on the market stall and incidentally rolled double. This is an advantage, not stunt. And it is sad, because stunts would work perfectly in that setting, with over-the-top actions of daring (first level...) heroes.
This is one I’ve been wanting to get. Thanks for the review 🤩
Good review. Never heard of the AGE system. Will have to look in to it. Thank you !
And now I own it... Looking forward to running this for my group. Without your review, I would likely never have heard of it.
This game's setting is almost like a distilled and focused version of exactly the kind of Fantasy I don't care for. I read the QuickStart they put out for Free RPG Day a few years ago. It seems like a very well crafted, but very "not for me" game. (Which is not a bad thing!). A good friend of mine really loved it, but he passed last year, sadly. I played the Expanse RPG, which uses the AGE system. But only a one-shot at a convention. Seemed fine.
Very intersting game mechanics. I'll be taking a closer look for sure. Thank you Lexi!
It looks perfect for my table. Thank you Lexi! I've found great RPGs thanks to you and this one got my brain (or shoud I say my heart) running wild. As I was watching your video, I searched online and found out it was written by Jeremy Crowford back in 2017... interesting! Never heard of the game! I also found several sourcebooks, screen and adventures. Have you seen them up close? Would you recommend any in particular? Thanks again Lexi!! Lovin' your videos!
There's a sourcebook called "Six of Swords" with 6 adventures in it--it's got pretty good adventure seeds, and all the mechanics can be used in Fantasy AGE or Dragon AGE, as well.
@@HarmonicClockwork Thank you Lexi! I'll pick that one up. Sounds perfect!
Very cool how the mechanics are linked with the setting!
Fantasy Age 2e is a really great book. Awesome review!
Great review!
I freakin' love your reviews. You mention all the pertinent stuff like core mechanics, how tied together the setting and mechanics are, main ideas and themes of the game, as well as highlighting things that set each game apart in the gaming space. And you do it all quickly and succinctly. Your analysis and insights are much, much appreciated.
I highly recommend the "tutorial" adventure called "Press Start." My partner had never ran a TTRPG before. They ran it easily using Press Start, which is one of the best tutorials for a TTRPG that I have seen.
Thank you for the very delightful and concise review!
Just played a first session of this, one to one with just me and the one player. Really great, genuinely felt like a golden age Final Fantasy game. I do agree the bestiary is pretty slim, but the system is light enough that I feel fairly confident making creatures of my own after just one session. And everything else you need is in there.
1. FabUlt is incredible 2. Why are you so pretty?
Just added this to my public Wish List! Also, created a wish list on a website other than Amazon, bc Amazon stopped allowing gift ideas from other websites. Anyhow, thanks!
I was lucky enough to have a friend crazy enough to run a short adventure for the original Cyberpunk game. I played a Media and I remember how mortal the world felt. He really captured the cyberpunk vibe and me, knowing only AD&D at the time, was pretty impressed with the game. I never had the opportunity to play it again, but I understood there were many issues with the game. I was able to secure a copy of 2020 many years later and really wanted to give it a try, but never found the right group to do so. Looking at RED now, there is definitively some changes. I miss the old netrunners, though I completely understand why they needed to be changed for the game to be more cohesive. I also feel while still mortal, characters have more sustainability in the newer version. Som days, I wonder if the original CP was a product of its era and thus hard to bring to the present as many of the values and trends of the past have changed and it is hard to get people in the right mindset to do the game justice (something I feel happens with many of olf White Wolf's game, specially Mage: The Ascension). If you ever get the opportunity to play with an experienced Cyberpunk GM, please take the opportunity. i am sure it will be an experience you will enjoy.
I've running a campaign for about a year now. My players are still having a lot of fun and enjoy the world they helped create. It's easy and fun to create monsters/NPCs and gear with the tools included and everything feels fairly balanced for this style of gameplay.
This definitely seems like a cool take on a Cyberpunk game.
Thanks for the video! Small nitpick: I think you have a typo in the title, in the 2nd word.
Good review, I've had this game, the two (so far) setting books, and the GM screen, though like you I'd like more of a bestiary, particularly of more mainstream creatures and animals. The free quickstart is really good though, and has a bit of a setting to it, if you want to check that out and give it a run through.
