Screw the Transformers! The best toys were at the bottom of the toybox! Join us as we discuss the best toys of the 70s, 80s and 90s! On tonight's adventure, we journey to the twin moons of the planet Robotron to revisit Buddy L's forgotten bot line!
I wonder while i have never heard of this film. Sounds like the most 80s movie ever, with Morticia Addams and Hellboy. 😅
Oddly it seems almost no one has heard of this film! It did it's short cinema run and then basically vanished. The director also co-wrote the screenplay for Krull, even though this is nothing like that in tone or execution. As a kid I just liked the robots and crazy going on and as an adult, wow, there's so much that went over my head : )
There's nothing little about Screwhead. He's like 6'2". Ninja turtles has never looked so bootlegged.
Thanx for highlighting these two bootlegs! The Korean TMNT/ Powersuit combiner highlights the crazy uniquess and quality of some vintage bootleg and offbrand transforming toys! Carded Trans bot is worth way more than 3 bucks IMO👌🏼 Another fun and interesting video!
Oh it cost more than three bucks. But not much more : )
Dr Claw haha "someday, Gadget" lol
It's only of the many voices I do really, really badly hahaha
@@Avon-Fox You did fine imo. I used to watch that cartoon as a kid and imo you did ok. I recognized it as him.
Hi to you too, Screwhead.
So that's what you look like, Avon. It's nice to see my fb friend in the flesh. :)
Yes, this is my flesh and what my lung air sounds like. : ) Happily breaking the stereotype that all of Australia sounds the same.
@@Avon-Fox I've been told Australia has different accents, yes and that there's not just one Australian accent.
Ah, I didn't know that the take-a-part figures were available individually carded. I've only seen the 2 and 3 pack boxes.
Granted we’ve only ever seen the one individually packaged, but it is likely the other two were also released on single cardback
If they are the Blue Box I am thinking of, they also made a range of zoo and farm animals, stamped "Made in Hong Kong" and often bearing a great similarity to Britains toys
They certainly did! And Dinosaurs as well as 'safari animals'.
Well, at least they were named appropriately. Nothing unclear about that. Just needed more... toy.... in that toy.
Right?!?
Absolutely! It's one of those lines where I'd love to see the prototypes and deign sketches that didn't go to production. I'm sure there would have been some wild things that just weren't financially viable.
Great video highlighting a very obscure and extremely rare line especially here in the US👏! Androform robots much like Kinsman bots had a VERY small distribution here.I believe Pic N Save carried them(Theres an Ad online I believe)These type of vintage offbrand and bootleg transforming toy lines are so fascinating for some of us collectors! Thank you!🤖
Couldn't agree more!
It's very much the feeling behind the tongue in cheek, 'screw the Transformers'. TFs are great, however often the 'big lines' don't get those one or two real gems of robots that came out of the need to innovate to grab attention.
Avon, thanks for this. Just discovered this chat and the channel. J.C. here from the fb group. You know I love the Gobots very much so I really appreciate this video. Thanks!!!
Glad you found us and hope you enjoy!
To be honest, this was all Screwhead's idea. I was dragged screaming in front of the camera. Still, we're here now so let's make some nonsense! : )
Wow, that really blew my away. No seriously, I'm withering away as we speak.
Such a bad great movie!
Stay tuned for more withering! The next episode is almost in the can!
Loving that soneone mentions Four Star!! I have Mr. Hardhat, Racetron, and only found out about Sagitta a few years ago. Currently have two on card and one loose, but finding them....seems impossible for me as they are NEVER listed correctly. Just to hear someone else know it, made my day!
I know way too much about four star and the glory of transistor robots. I’ll try and talk avon into doing an episode on then one day 😁
A very interesting end to this particular topic. Kid: "Mom, can we have transformers?" Mom: "We have transformers at home." Transformers at home: Zybots.
They are the real American robot
It's when you ask for Zybots and Mum says, we have Zybots at home... don't go home. Just run.
It's so short! It seems like there would be so much more to say about Zybots, but I guess not.
Did you see part 1?
@@ScrewheadAFPodcast I did. I have been waiting for this one with bated breath. It's still not enough to satisfy me. 😂
Hahahaha
Maybe we can squeeze some more gold from the real American robots. Stay tuned!
@@ScrewheadAFPodcast DON'T PROMISE THAT! Uuugh! I guess we can find some more info nuggets!
instant sub
Thanks!
I'm sure if that robot was popular, they would find an in universe way to make a movie about it. I should say, ANOTHER movie of it, since Fleet of Doom exists. 😅
Right?!?
That thing was amazing!
Which thing? I’m kidding, the only amazing thing in that episode is the omega voltron 😁
This was a cool episode. Please make one about Machine Robo Chronos no Daigyakushuu
Putting it on the list 😉
This will happen! If not separately, as part of some Machine Robo, Gobots (and related) multi-part episodes. They're going to need some actual thought to tackle : )
Any chance we can get a look at the bootleg cabinet behind you there, Avon? I see some very curious things like that R-Jetan and a Dread Launcher Revolt back there, not to mention whatever the hell those Autoroller-looking ones are up top to the left.
We’ll do a close up in one of our next episodes 😁
Adventure time took a lot from pop culture and obscure 80s stuff. Wouldn't surprise me if zybots were a part of Pendleton Ward (i think that's the creators name) childhood.
That was my thought too
this was so much fun i got my zybots out to play with while i watched. i was thnking "oh i'll find out about more zybots i want" but now i'm all "nope, i'm good. eight is plenty"
Wait until part 2…. You’ll be all into getting more zybots 😁
I wish I'd had this sane thought 10 years ago!
@@ScrewheadAFPodcast CHALLENGE ACCEPTED
I would love to see a discussion on how y'all actually do the research on this stuff.
Not sure how interesting it would be 😁, just a lot of googling and paperwork research, but I will put it on the list 😁👍🏻
Oh that's easy! No social life, OCD and a fetish for minutia ;)
That magic robot triggered something waaaaaaaay back at the back of my mind. I had one of those when I was like 3. That's astounding.
Back the robot to school 😁
I remember seeing GoBots toys in catalogs but never on store shelves.
They were quite prolific for a couple years and then faded back
Why? Why did I pronounce Zeemon like that? 😂
Tootsie Toy Bubble Man needs a mention.
Magic robot was made for my 4yo! TGP robot is why we have a thriving 3rd party parts industry.
Soooo thanks TGP Robot! The hero we didn't know we needed.
Thankyou for explaining an old puzzle for me. When the two lines first appeared, Machine Men seemed much more visible than Transformers, notably through secondary merchandise and advertising, yet was ultimately eclipsed by Transformers. Understanding that this came down to Machine Men using a "grab the money and run" strategy, while Transformers worked on a longer term approach. This goes on to explain a lot of other things too, choices of company to produce the cartoon, and attempts to secure permission from vehicle companies being the most obvious
Well even more granular, the Tonka approach didn't technically apply to Robo Machine and Machine Men. In part yes, however as they distributed direct by Bandai it was more so Bandai making coin on an international market they'd failed to get a foothold on in the US. Their marketing in the rest of the world, simple cards and character names (to start with) just didn't fly in the US. Bandai (possibly with some compensation to Tonka) rode the marketing campaign benefits of Challenge of the Gobots in non US regions. They knew they could end the lines any time they wanted and would definitely have had their finger on the pulse to see how it was going post them wanting to wind the line up in Japan. If Tonka kept doing the legwork for them marketing wise, even outside the US simply by Hanna Babera on-selling their cartoon outside the US then they'd be made not to keep it going while it still offset the cost of freight, manufacture and overall continued investment risk.
"while Transformers worked on a longer term approach" - This proved true with the gobots movie imo it was rushed and they could have waited and made a good story about rocklords but they didn't.
@@Crasher1982The movies show how their different strategies affected the cartoons in a nutshell. HB could produce a movie (or a series for that matter) quickly and cheaply, ideal for a company that wants to grab money while the grabbing is good. The more ornate style of Transformers (to say nothing of more ornate musical score and more expensive voice talent in the movie) would have taken longer to produce and cost more to do, but worth it if you were playing a longer term strategy (which they showed they were doing by eliminating virtually all the old characters and replacing them with new ones). Ironically, both movies failed in their objective to sell new toy lines; transformers had to bring back many of the characters they had removed because the old ones didn't sell as well as they did, and Rock Lords did not seem to get off the ground :(
@@blakm3516Agreed, the movies prove your point for sure about TF's using the longer term approach. Gobots movie looks like it was rushed and it shows.
@@Crasher1982I think also they went to HB for it because they they were cheap because this was the industry standard. The whole, using cartoons to sell toys was largely a new thing, mostly driven by MOTU's success after launch in the 3rd quarter of 1983. If you think about that president, these 'advert cartoons' were mostly made cheaply by companies such as Filmation. Tonka's distribution of Gobots was very regionally isolated to North America and some in the UK. So beyond that they weren't going to see much return from production because Bandai were doing the rest of global distribution AND benefiting from the cartoon. That and in Japan, Bandai were selling their toys as Machine Robo, not Gobots. The Takara/Hasbro deal was very different. Takara rebranded their old toys Transformers, the cartoon was made in Japan and Korea and translated into Japanese with global distribution largely handled by Hasbro. So the investment from Hasbro's point of view was worth throwing a few more bucks at. So the relationship was very different with Bandai really only engaging Tonka as a broker with local knowledge of the US market to do the lifting while Hasbro/Takara was a partnership and more broadly helped both.
I had those Gobots cups. I betcha my mom still has them.
They're so good. They're borderline indestructible!
oh i am so here for this podcast
The existence of Mustard Monster and Ketchup Kritter also indicates, to me anyway, that there should have been an industry around providing bottle adapters for various size condiment bottles. Plays well with... Heinz!
Who can resist bugs... that are bots? I would venture to say... not many 4 - 9 year olds... in 1983, who were, coincidentally, already into bugs and the possibilities of robot variations, thereof. :)
Exoskeleton creatures immediately makes sense as robot versions far more than... oh say a truck that's suddenly an ape. ;)
He's definitely Dale. Chip had a black nose.
Those are the most 80s neon colored robots I have ever seen.
This was interesting to hear about…never heard of chargeatron before. The line “written by Tom from marketing” made me laugh harder than makes sense
Oh God don't encourage him! Uuuugh, you know now Tom will make a return one day 😂
Hold up there. Niche and Niche (Pronounced "Nitch") are not the same word. The first is an unknown sub-faction of marketing, having limited appeal. The second is like a crag or small outcropping. They're spelled the same, but they're not the same word. :D
I pronounce it "Neesh" so my grammar is already wrong :). Thanks for the comment!!!
Oh you can stay! I'm painting you a personal parking space while typing this.
