    I climbed up the cables years a ago with my 12 and 15 year old sons. Not that big a deal ( when its not raining) the main thing you have to worry about is the marmots stealing your trail mix when you get to the top.

    I hiked up on a calm day but the winds really picked up as I got to the subdome. I almost turned back but pressed on, briefly in fear for my life. The cables were far steeper than I expected but not that bad once I started climbing. Did the whole trip in about 9 hours and it was well worth it. I still got sweaty palms watching you approach the edge.

    There are literally a ton of one day climb vids for youtube. I think doing it in one day is the way to go, weather permitting. I am also glad to see your friend decided not to try. Physically, she's in no shape to attempt the cables. I'm glad she thought better of it!

    I have been there, it’s ridiculous where a tiny slip will kill you. They should have catch nets on either side and sued until they do. It’s open to the public. Everyone should have to use a rope and clip at the very least.

    Half Dome for some, those that can safely gauge their limits, half dum for the ones that can't and don't see their lethal shortcoming. It's not the cables , it's the stable . Knowing your strong and enduring and balanced enough to maintain safe level stability for the duration of this challenging climb with enough upper body , particularly hand strength to keep yourself poised upright using the cables when the feet alone won't do it

    You can tell, people at the top think they’re cool but anyone who gets even a little bit close to the edge or climbs half dome in the rain, I just believe that they must have a death wish seriously. The rock is very slippery when it’s dry, and when it rains the rock is super slippery and that’s how the beautiful young lady fell to her death. She was only 20 years old. 😢R.I.P. I forgot her name and to tell you that it happened recently. VERY SAD.

    No one is supposed to begin an ascent on the cables at Half Dome if there are any rain clouds visible anywhere on the horizon as posted in several places including at the beginning of the cables. Therefore, to act surprised and scared on Half Dome regarding rain, slick surfaces on the granite rock is more than a little disingenuous. The permit system is creating pressure for hikers to gamble on conditions, but everyone is ultimately responsible for their fate in the wilderness, this isn't Disneyland. Stop acting like children and be responsible adults.

We did it in one day, 13 hours, starting at 430 a.m, the worse was sub-dome, with no cable, nothing to stop you super scary going down.... but we will go back next season in May with the lottery in march and do it with our team in 2 days....one day was mental! Per a report published in 2017, since 1932, 31 people had died on Half Dome. Of those 31 people, only 5 of them had died on the cables. And one of those five had a heart attack, and 3 died from lightening strikes. Stop the over-dramatizing of this hike.

    Forgive the obvious question: Why would anyone attempt this climb without a harness?

    • @lucasterradostuff
      @lucasterradostuff 2 месяца назад

      Believe it or not, the vast majority of folks who have completed this hike have done so without a harness. The reason why? It's surprisingly far less dangerous than you may think. 99.99999% of people who attempt it (including children and elderly folks) complete it without issue. The primary safety concern is rain making the granite slick. The vast majority of incidents have occurred in wet conditions. In dry conditions a harness is arguably more of a detriment than a benefit. I used a harness and anyone who feels safer using one, should too, but it's definitely not necessary.

      Maybe it feels like nothing to you, but to many people the sense of accomplishment (not to mention the view from the top, the beauty of the trail, and the camaraderie of shared experience with fellow hikers) at the end of such a challenge is definitely worth the risk (which is extremely low considering 99.999% of folks who hike Half Dome complete it without incident). To each their own.
