As a professional photographer, you presumably know the “sunny f/16” rule (if you don’t, you should really read Ansel Adams’s books about photography and how to take pictures). This says that in bright sunlight (which the moon is in, if you can see it in the sky) then if you set the aperture to f/16 and the shutter speed to 1/(ISO setting), you will get the correct exposure. As an example, if you’re using a sensitivity of ISO 100, you set the aperture to f/16 and the shutter speed to 1/100. Now try the sunny f/16 rule when taking a picture of the moon on a clear night. If you do this, you will find out that the moon comes out dull grey, exactly like the picture of the moon in front of the Earth. I did this years ago (when I was still using transparency film), and this made me realise how dull the moon really is. It only looks bright in the night sky because everything else is dark.
