There is a lot of ambiguity within these patterns. I am learning to draw or map them in krita.

Drawing from nature with Krita I am learning how to use the experimental web brush in Krita to mark patterns. While watching this short video after I did it I noticed about a dozen really nice patterns as well. I find the more I pay attention the better or more sensitive my perception is.

In this slideshow with image and voiceover and a short timelapse video i explain how to calculate very accurately the amount of wool needed for any size rug you intend on making with your tufting gun. Correction, i mention in the video that the Ak1 tufting gun comes from Germany, it comes from China and is carried by a few companies in the US as well. It costs anywhere from $130 to $150 dollars...

Hii If i may ask where do i get the blades from And should the blades be barely touching like a scissor
Millistek, and see if you can order a manual. It tells you how to adjust the blade. The blade should be about a thickness of a sheet of paper from touching.
@@allencomeau thank you very much for the reply it helps to know from someone that used it before... I have the german munsinger and bought a blade from turkey for $115 it took me days to adjust the blade. Good luck If you want me to show you the blade or send you their info i would be glad to do so The blade is unlike the Chinese one its very good quality for that price i could not find it less than $500
I see them pretty quickly

Hello Allen...i am completely new to this concept does one need to seal the edges of the cuts? i have many questions as this has wonderful possibilities for design and repurposing carpets
Hi Jim. You can email me at nspiwa@gmail.com. I can tell you about the process. In the meantime check out Designarug from pompano beach Florida. I worked for them back in the 80s
great!
Thanks
Hi , I was wondering if you could share a video on how you do the backing of tufted rugs. Thanks !
I plan on making one on the next rug I do but it is going to be in early September, I’m waiting for my wool and it won’t arrive for at least two weeks.

What kind of yarn did you use?

Hi
Hello
Wow your rugs are some of the best I've seen. I've just ordered an AKIII. Waiting for delivery. As with a silent air compressor. What would you advise in a size frame to make. Do you use different frames for different sizes?
I have three frames, the one in this video was my first and is my smallest. It is about 3 foot 4 inches by 4 feet. Only good for small mats. Hope you did not pay too much for your gun. Under 200 us and cheaper if you search.
Thank you so much for your reply. My gun is coming from Europe Germany to Ireland, RKIII. 740euro. Receiving from Europe I won't have to pay custom taxes. This is a puematic guñ. But your saying 200$! Really? Even if I paid custom taxes to receive from USA it wouldn't come to what they asking for in Europe. Do you have a link to any sites that sell pnumatic guns? Hoffman is over 2500euro. I'm going for puematic purely for the weight.
Plus I am dubious of buying from AliExpress or Alibaba, many have said only buy from reputable tufting companies and not China fakes! I'm now confused! Do you think I'm paying too much?
@@oliviapower6503 I think the AK III is made in China, all of the us sellers buy their guns in China. I wish you luck with your gun. I have a Hoffman vml 16 as well as the j2000 that is from Israel. The j2000 is pneumatic and sticks so I think it needs brushes. I’ll post a video of the second gun. Or give you the link.

Hey what kind of backing is preferred for use? And is there different materials for anti skid ones Thank you
there is a company in Germany that produces the best backing for rug tufting industry and they have an outlet in PA as well. it sells for about 3.50 us per square meter and you have to purchase about 100 meters minimum order i believe. i purchase my secondary backing from craft stores. treated burlap comes any length by 72 inches or less. great for small rugs. this company i will link you to also sells secondary backing as well. www.fiberlane.de/en-gb/synthetic-fabrics/floorcovering
@@allencomeau Thank you so much!
@@allencomeau I live in PA. Do you know what the outlet store is and where it’s located?

Lovely rugs! I am just starting. I have the ZQ-II and thinking of buying the AKI and AKIII. I would love to see a carving video and a video on faces.

Don't wait for inspiration. Tufting is exploding right now. Even if all you do is small one color rugs.. put it on video and get it out there. There is money to be made now. I can't share what isn't there
i dare say most of these tufters are going to make more money from ads on YT than they will selling rugs, lol. that is if they can reach, what is it, 4000 hours of watched content? yeah, tufting is exploding atm, but the majority of these guys have no idea what they're doing. i predict we're going to see a glut of tufting machines on ebay in six months from people who barely made back their investment back because at some point they realize that a race to the bottom is making them work for $3.57 an hour.
Hi Allen! I see an orange pulley system near your frame. Is that to assist with the weight of the tufting gun? If so, can you please explain or show how you use it? 🤗
Yes it is. It is called a balancer, it is adjustable depending how heavy the tool you are using is. I takes the weight off of the tufting gun and if adjusted correctly makes it feather light. Very necessary with the Hoffman gun because of the weight. I have an overhead track system above both frames in order to reach the entire work area. When tufting you have to be able to go up and down and sideways as well.
Oh thanks ... I really wanted to ask a few questions, especially on backing material. My long search for monk's cloth came up with a US source and it's very expensive and I know the company sources it from China. So I did buy some from China ... shipping was just a little less than the cloth. I would love it if you had a video on sourcing materials. BTW,: the only place in the states where you can get the AK-1 is from guy Tim Eads who has a blog with loads of info. Not sure when you bought yours but he sells his for $275 US which is $30 more than it was 2 weeks ago. Plus shipping, it was ridiculous. So I found the company in China that manufactures it and I bought one direct for $190 US and the shipping was way less than from US. Also could you tell me where you buy your wool yarn? Your rugs look so thick and lovely! It's great to have a Canadian source! thanks
Well, if you are in Canada this is good. Lemieux spinning in Montreal. They have cones of wool. If you purchase your first order in bulk they give you wholesale every order afterwards. I think you have to order about 20 kilos but the savings are substantial . It cost me $15 Canadian to the door with shipping and taxes including for one pound of wool on a cone. I find the cone the best way to do these rugs. I got my AK1 for 130 from China. Lemieux will send you a color card for their wool. Also it is specifically made for rugs. They also dye colors specifically for a little extra per pound for specific jobs. There is a place in New Jersey or somewhere like that? Newark, called Fiberlane, google them. They have their main office in Germany. They sell the polyester backing that is top of the line industry standard at about $6 us, they also charge a cutting charge of 20 dollars for cuts under 100 feet. I have tried other backings but this one is the best to work with. The China backing is only 2 or 3 dollars but is not very good. In any craft you make the deal is that inexpensive materials are harder to work with and make inferior products to the superior materials that are not much more in price. By the time you get your backing to the door it will cost you about 10 Canadian taxes and shipping included. Even if you pay half that and let’s say did a 6x9 rug which is 6 yards you would only save 30 dollars. If this is something you are doing for clients they usually don’t mind paying the price and you have something well made. Where are you located?
I do 2 strands of 3 ply or one 2ply and one 3 ply or 3 strands of two ply wool. Specify when ordering I prefer 3 strands of two ply, so if I was ordering enough wool for a 4x5 rug. That is 20 square feet, I would need 10 pounds. I would have to order 3 cones of whatever color I needed with about 3.3 pounds on each cone. For safe measure I would order 3 four pound cones. The waste would not be wasted and is included in pricing. If you just want to order a few cones to start you could purchase on my account to get the discount . I bought wool from a fabric store and it is insane what they charge. Even Tim eats charges 32 us per pound which is about 3 times more than Lemieux does. If you count duty and exchange it’s even more.
So short! ... I was eager to see more of your workshop! Just recently had my AK-1 delivered and hungry for info on tufting. BTW: found your fantastic video on calculating yarn for tufting! The comments were turned off. Thank you so very much as it's very, very useful information!
