Tamiya Spitfire Mk.1 1/48 Scale model Part 3 - Prime, Pre-Shade, Paint and Pledge #scalemodel
Build video of Tamiya's 1/48 scale model Spitfire Mk.1 (2018 tooling - reference 61119)
Part 3 - Prime, Pre-Shade, Paint and Pledge
Now the main build is complete it's time to start painting the Spitfire.
This starts with priming the model (using MRP grey primer). Next panel lines are highlighted with pre-shading to give depth and shadow to the paint (using Vallejo ModelAir Nato Black - because that's what I had to hand).
The main paint scheme was painted using Vallejo ModelAir paints, from the WW2 RAF box set - which makes sourcing the paints easier. I masked using the "Blu-Tak Worm" method, and lots of Tamiya tape. I did make a mistake but fortunately that was easy to correct.
Once the paint...

    Hi I'm a little fed up with the so called "perfect fit" of aircraft kits whoever the manufacturer is: actually it's a pity it quite never fits so well. Stop that legend.

      I have to agree. Though it's easy to marvel at the engineering at the time when doing a kit that literally clips together with invisible seams, there's something to be said for having to put the effort in to fill gaps and blend wonky joints - which gives a much greater sense of achievement once the model is completed.

    I love my Monogram Saturn V model rocket. I originally got one for Christmas 1969. And some years later it probably got thrown out thrown out by my dad When I got older. Fast forward to 2000, I got one on eBay. I built the model again , and because of the internet and Saturn 5 modeling fan sites I was able to get proper guidance on the paint scheme and decals for the Apollo 11 Saturn V, and that's what I have to this day.

    The cockpit has a molded on wiper which is ridiculous! It can be taken off carefully but it was totally unnecessary. They also provided decals for the cockpit frame. Also useless as they would only adhere to the inside or outside of the frame, leaving the other side clear! I suggest masking and dual painting (inside color and outside.

    Ooh, you cheater. A true beginner uses a Stanley knife or a penknife and doesn't sand anything. 😉 I hadn't realized that the kits in the "starter sets" are simplified, although it does sort of make sense now. I guess Airfix don't want to put off beginners by going overboard with the "fiddlys". One pedantic detail (if you're interested): The narrow cable on the side at 1:37:06 was actually used for removing and replacing tracks (a constant chore for Tiger crews. Each track weighted nearly 3 tons). They'd attach one end to the drive sprocket, fix the other end to the end of the track then rev up the engine and get the cable to "pull" the heavy track back over the top of the road wheels.

    • @RobsModels
      @RobsModels 8 месяцев назад

      I did consider using the "wobble" method to remove the parts from the sprue, but couldn't bring myself to do it! ;-) I couldn't find my cheap retractable craft knife so I allowed myself the compromise. As a kid I'd 'borrow' one of my mum's emery boards, but these nail blocks worked a treat and have three grits and a polishing side in one. And they're cheap. I must admit that though the individual wheels and link & length track would be fiddly for younger modelers, I'm sure they wouldn't have too much of an issue attaching the spare track pieces to the turret, the tow ropes and eyelets. However, they did require pre-drilling the holes and of course it saves Airfix a sprue of plastic. Crucially from Airfix's point of view they can keep the more detailed one in their range, with the Starter Kit being a more simplified overing. Having now completed the model (video soon!) the Starter Kit Tiger 1 does look a little sparse when compared to it's more detailed brother. I'll admit I thought it odd having the additional cable on the side but admit I didn't give it much thought, but as soon as I read your comment it seems so obvious!!!

However, many claim the 1/48 Spitfire is one of Tamiya's best ever models, so I guess the proof will be in the building. Hope your build goes well!

      It's a shame that this kit is based on the test Saturn V of the mid 60's. It's full of little mistakes and assumptions. Fortunately with some research you can use it as a basis to create something more accurate - if you have the patience and dedication! I had hoped that a company would release a newly tooled (and correct!) version for the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11, but with people still buying this old kit I guess they don't want to waste their money.

    • @RobsModels
      @RobsModels 9 месяцев назад

      Off the top of my head: I'm not too sure! The kit in the box (and hence paint and decals) is based on the test Saturn V, and was in production long before man was landing on the moon. It appears that each Apollo mission had little variations. It doesn't help that quite a few books and documentaries use 'stock' footage and videos, so the pictures may be of a different Apollo mission. I found an official NASA website which had pictures of the various missions, so tried to piece together my painting and decals to create the Apollo 11 scheme - and made sure I only used images and footage when I knew for sure that it was Apollo 11, and not another mission. Saying that, it was piecing together a jigsaw of different pictures from different angles, so I may be wrong.

    Thank you for this video, Rob. I’d never had the urge to build this kit, or any other Saturn V kit.....and then I did....🤪😂😂 Well, I watched this video, had a rummage on eBay and found one of these kits for under £30 delivered.....and delivered it has been....an overnight job....bloody marvellous stuff! I’ll just build it as a one piece rocket, which is all you really need and give it a light weathering..... ....anyhow, thanks for pushing my hand, I’ll look forward to building it in the new year. It you were to have it next to a 1/32 scale model I think the difference in scale would be too large. However, if you were to create a diorama and use forced perspective using a 1/24 model in the foreground with 1/32 scale models in the background (so objects that are closer to the viewer appear bigger) it might work.

    I cannot believe how badly Airfix messed up the tracks on these kits. The Tiger used only one shape of track link. It was the same on both sides of the tank. This was to simplify maintenance, spare part supply etc. So, the fine detailing on the tracks would point forward at one side of the tank, and backward at the other. But airfix have MIRRORED their track parts, making TWO kinds of track. And yes, I'm talking about the more detailed "link and length" parts which are supposedly the better ones.
