friend, excellent video, greetings from Colombia, I am already making my own rod. I would like to ask you if you can answer a question for me. The shiny side of one strip is also worked the same as the others in the final brushing. I thank you.
The shiny side (enamel side) is flattened with a scrapper. It is not planned like the other two sides. Thank you for watching the videos.
@@AlbaughRodCo Thank you for sharing your knowledge, it is very helpful to me.
Any recommendations for a Naphtha substitue? Apparently, Naphtha is now banned in some areas.
Coleman fuel (white gas) is used in the original Bergman floatant recipe. Might be worth a try.
Can you use a small spray can of Scotch Guard and spray your fly's to keep them floating ?
I never tried that. Worth a shot. Anything to make the material hyrdophobic.
Well done. Now we know it cost $1 to make and they charge us $12. 😊
Would be a great Boy or Girl Scout project.
Or any fishing/tying club.
Great tip! Very helpful!👍 I really was needing this. I hope it Will work for me! 🤓 Thanks Matt!
I use basically the same clamp. My clamping pads are two extra cork rings(try not to glue them to the grip rings as I have done). As I snug up, I measure the distance along the axis of each threaded rod. Even distance = even clamping pressure. Love your channel.
nice trick for getting the air bubble out of the ferrule
Work smarter, not harder!!
Thanks - very good video. I’ve made six rods using Gorilla Glue. It seems to hold well, but like the hot glue it doesn’t hold the tabs down very well. Request: I’ve read books, articles and watched dozens of videos on splitting cane, but nothing is detailed enough to penetrate my simple mind. Most end up saying that a person will improve with practice, but I hate tossing strips even as I’m learning. Would you be able to make a video that’s painfully exacting?
Thank you...a splitting video is on the list (I split by hand) and painfully exacting is my specialty.
Nice Master class!👍 I can't wait for the next one. I hope it Will help me to remove and reinstal a ferrule that didn't stay correctly, he Rod doesn't stay lined up. 🤓
I hope so too!
I use a small piece of cloth.. works better than paper towel
Awesome information, thank you!!
Glad it was helpful!
Very nice. Do you not use an epoxy over the top, like Gen 4, after the spar coat?
Just spar varnish. you can use an epoxy. My personal preference is varnish only.
Very informative.
Sandpaper is a no-no once you have a good fit. Oxidation is more effectively removed using 0000 steel wool to buff it off. A few seasons of using 2000 grit paper to remove the oxidation will result in a loose fit eventually.
What glue do you used ? Is it fevicol ?
Titebond 3!
Hoe do you clean the varnish off the guides and ferrules?
What do you use for glue that can be removed with heat?
Good to see when things don’t go just as expected. Thanks.
I'm game - you two EARNED another subscriber ! Mark Vogt | VOGTLAND OUTDOORS I'm going to try this on a $49 black graphite switch rod I got off of Amazon, but I swear that it looked UNFINISHED. If I can give it a glossy finish just using (White) Gorilla Glue, I'll be tickled !
Great vid
Splitting in halves and halves again, in my experience, does not get you to .250, but rather to .300 something. There is a solid reason most of us have to split into thirds after we split the culm in half. There are other ways to get thin enough strips, but they require more experience and a lot of control.
Why not use regular rod epoxy finish?
You could if you wanted to.
Hi Mat, interesting video thanks for sharing
How do you store a Bamboo fly rod. In a sock in the case. But then can you lean it in a corner or must you lay it flat?
cork handmade or buy? can you give me a reason about EVA Cork grade A or grade AAA? or handmade from lokal wood?
Well done video, thanks
just did the complete rod in minutes
works on glass rods also
gorilla clear willl do it in one coat do eye wrap also make vintage rod look new
Thanks!
Loved it! You two should have 250k subs
Super!!! Keep up the great work! Look into using Promosm! It will help you get your videos higher in the search results!
Nice masterclass!!👌👍
thanks for this. Do you heat the gorilla glue before applying? It seems to me that it would be easier to apply...
Never tried to heat it. Might be a great tip! I'll have to try it. Thanks
Excellent how-to, Matt!
Good tips. What kind of wax is good?
I use parowax. Its the same wax that is used in canning foods. I find it in the grocery store.
Thanks Matt!👍
Love your content and Beautiful rods you craft! Since your an experienced rod builder. Try finding a (Safe Non Toxic) way to wrap and varnish rods. And do a video on that. Some of us are very sensitive to chemicals or have become sensitized to them from the use of them that is forever life changing and sometimes life threatening.
Thank you for the comment and question. Not a lot of non toxic options that I'm aware of. I'll have to rest some stuff out. Tung and linseed oils are food safe and can be used as a rod finish. Traditional varnishes and epoxy are used for the wraps. That is the difficult part to find the non toxic alternatives.
How do tighten the inner part of a female ferrule if it to loose
Nice video Matt. Clear and informative. I've used a clothes iron to heat sections of blanks (tips) for straightening with success when I my first heat gun burned out. Good to see you doing videos again. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing.
Thank you for the comment. Good tip on the clothes iron. I've used it on tip sections before. Works great!
Thanks for this. I have 2 blanks glued up and am planning a GG finish for one and Tru-Oil for the other.
Thanks..it was good to see you on the VRG.
@@AlbaughRodCo what could u use to fill gaps in glue together splines for a flyrod to fill open seems
Thanks Matt! Very informative. You cleared me some doubts! How do you heat the flex and varnish?
I place it on a radiator space heater. If I were working with it for a while, I'd spread the mix on some tin foil and place it on a coffee cup warmer.
@Jorge Santos
It's good to see you back posting videos. Your tutorial on tipping helped me a lot as I was a beginner.
Jeff, thank you, I enjoy making them. Are you currently working on any rods?
@@AlbaughRodCo yes I just got my garage organized after I moved to a new house, and I am roughing 3 rods. It's good to be back in the shop!
Nice info!👍 Can you give some info on transparent wraps?! Thanks.
Jorge, I'll put together a video on transparent wraps. Thank you for the question. I always like to hear what people are working on.
@@AlbaughRodCo Thank you Matt! I really appreciate that!
thanks for this video!
Why not cut that other thread, seems to be in the way?
This is an ancient buffalos BONE. If you don't have that ancient buffalo bone you cant build official split bamboo rods
It is not a good idea to wear sandals while doing the flaming.
Thanks for the demonstration. Appreciate the no nonsense.
Have not used Titebond III for glue up, but may be considering it. Currently use Epon and wear gloves, but still manage to get some on me during clean up, including the use of solvents to clean up the binder, glass plate to roll the blank, etc. Like the idea of no toxicity with Titebond, however short work time is a limiting factor. Read on the Titebond site that it can be diluted with 5% water by weight or volume to increase work time. Some makers apparently "mist" it.
