I'm 46 now. Tony Harrison had a profound impact on me, along with the schoolbooks of my Derbyshire later bus driving grandfather marked with the same sort of snotty sneering comments that denigrated dialect. The end of them and uz - I think it's about the humour not failure. The ongoing struggle.

"This is a representative non-gender specific person for the whole human race" - As a teacher/tutor, are you compelled to give this kind of 'disclaimer' all the time? Why don't you just say; this is a human/person/stick person? I am concerned with the whole 'offensive' male/female gender obsession that is currently sweeping through our western education system. We apparently can't say postman, milkman or fireman any more... for 'fear' of causing 'offense'.

That's not why she said that. I think she was just saying "this is a human being with same figure as anyone else in this world" just so she can oppose it by bringing up Marx's theory to say "no, it's not the same. It depends on their social position". Her saying that had nothing to do with genders.
