What I first noticed is that one of the priorities of the captain is money. Money is necessary to live yes, everyone needs money to survive. But on the story money is used almost like a tool for self grandeur. Having a competition on who makes the more money is definitely something that will impact the pilot on his decision to fly even if he didn’t get enough sleep or is feeling fatigued. This may have been one of the reasons why the pilot didn’t or couldn’t notice where the smell was coming from. Fatigue makes it harder to make decisions and to have good situational awareness. The FO being stereotypically (not in a good way) could have been a reason of worry but as crew we are trained to let it go and focus on the tasks at hand. What is truly concerning is the FO not following the checklist. As we know the more we think we know something, we get complacent and this is not a good thing when we have situations and risks at hand. Ultimately I think the story highlights all the hazardous attitudes a pilot can have. In this story, it didn’t end in disaster. But it could have, since an accident doesn’t usually occur with one error, but multiple errors stacked together.

After indoc the next steps generally have to do with systems knowledge and procedures knowledge. The best place to learn to fly is on the ground. The air is a place to verify that which you have learned on the ground. The best tool and resource to improve performance generally is your brain sharpened with chairflying!
