C'mon fangirls, Joey was amazing, but even he was a fan of the truly next level skilled drummer's that were a step above him. He was an exceptionally fast and accurate, single stroke metal drummer. With some groove that many metal drummers don't have. I'd rate him as the best single stroke metal drummer of all time, but that's likely bias, because he was a long distance friend in the late 90s/00s and some European metal drummers even before his time used single strokes and no swivel technique on double pedal or double bass drums (just like him) long before Joey. They just didn't get the following that Joey did from being in a globally successful metal band, so they've been lost to the void. When we spoke in person in Australia in 1999 before and after the first Slipknot show in Melbourne (absolutely brutal and life changing), we shared a few favourite drummers and when we caught up again in 2003, 2005 and 2007 we both agreed that we'd never match the skillset, pocket and groove that Tony Royster Jr had aged just 12. His drum solo on a US late night show in the 90s aged 12 still holds up well today. I suggest that people find it on RUclips to be blown away by this double kicking, groove master of a tiny, thin, short, not even teenage African American drummer. Who mostly learnt drums from gospel church sessions. To drum like Tony at that age, let alone today takes exceptional technique, because he had hardly any muscles to smash the kit with. Yet he effortlessly played a complex drum solo for over 5mins on live TV without missing a beat and would practise for hours at a time for years before that. Showing chops as a pre teen, that most drummers of multiple decades will never have INCLUDING ME AND MOST LONG TERM DRUMMERS THAT PRACTICE ALMOST DAILY. Joey was a beast and I'm in no way talking down his contributions to the drumming World. People who say he's the best are lying to themselves or haven't explored technical drumming very deeply - which Joey himself even stated!!! Joey inspired me to do more double kick and speed metal drumming than anyone for which I'm forever grateful. I used it to increase stamina, fitness and my overall health went through the roof because of it. I have never found better exercise than forcing myself to play a mixture of triplets, 16th and 32nd note blast beats on double kicks for 90mins to a metronome (often speeding up in 5 or 10 minute intervals) after minimum 90mins practicing whatever I was focused on at the time. No triathlon, long distance marathon, MMA fight or non metal live drumming for upto 3hrs comes close to the stamina necessary to play 90mins of blast beats in an Australian summer, non A/C jam room after at least 90 minutes of warning up and practice anything from jazz to samba, reggae, blues, roots and hard rock. I thank Joey from the bottom of my heart for inspiring me to be so fit from metal drumming, that all day/night hard s*x sessions are a walk in the park stamina wise ever since. It didn't even come close to the energy, focus and stamina needed to do my daily 3hr minimum drumming practice, once I added the blast beat stamina routine inspired by him and him alone. Eloy Casagrande is a better technical drummer, with a far bigger musical repertoire than Joey ever had. Hits far harder and can play stuff that Joey was never capable of. Would that be possible if he wasn't inspired by Joey in the 00's? Maybe not, but he's definitely a better drummer today than Joey ever was. So is El Estapario Siberiano and several other modern drummers. To say Joey's the best of all time is a straight lie. Maybe the best single stroke, metal drummer to ever play in a globally known band and certainly a better drummer than most bands of that era had. It breaks my heart to see him so blown out, full of fluids, especially in his face and far from his peak fitness in his final years with us. It looks very much like pharmaceutical and alcohol fluid retention, plus weight gain. He was obviously depressed and angry that his body could no longer do what his brain was still capable of. I'll always remember him as being within an inch of my tiny stature and similar skinny AF body with well toned muscle and the ability to sound like a 6ft+ beast of a man behind the kit (something that I couldn't pull off day after day like he could while on tour where sleeping and other routines are difficult). RIP you legend. You still inspire me to this day and your well earned legacy will live on in drumming history until this world ends.
